Aren bit her lit and nodded, looking at him as he asked the next question. “Mari - nng - water, prey, animals.” she tried to explain, as she hasn’t quite found out the name of the building.

He stared blankly at the girl, trying to decipher her broken sentences. “Mari? Do you mean Marine? Like an aquarium?” He guessed confidently, although he isn’t familiar with where any of the aquariums are in the city.

Nervously she’d made her way into the shop, even when every instinct she had was telling her not to return. There’s a lump in her throat, one that she can’t assuage. Smoothing out her hair she makes her way towards the counter, “Hello? I wanted to apologize for the other day?”

It hadn't been a particularly busy day for Madden as the rain didn't drive in many customers. As a result, he found himself engrossed in a video game someone had pawned to him awhile back. It was one of those millennial games that he found to be incredibly stupid yet strangely addictive and ended up using it to kill time during store hours. He heard the door ring as a potential customer walked in and he immediately recognized the girl walking towards him. “Oh really? I thought you came back here to break some more things.” He said coldly, finally looking at her and cocking a brow.

esperanza:

The day had been like most others-simple. Esperanza despised how dry things had been in her life. She didn’t thrive well falling into a cycle of mundane life. She even started becoming bored with the contracts she was taking on. After being lost in thought for a while, someone walked by her table. The cafe had been a personal favorite spot of hers. The stranger had something about them that intrigued the young demigoddess. For a little fun, she willed a breeze to kick up around the little patio. “Some weather, huh?” she called out to the other with a little smirk. 

Over the years of living in New York, Madden had developed his own set of early morning rituals. It usually consisted of running a few miles, depositing money in the bank, and then getting a well deserved cup of coffee to start his day off right. He enjoyed these mornings by himself and would let his mind wander, completely oblivious to those around him. It was the perfect time to disassociate before he had to barter all day long with a bunch of crazed customers. He had felt the sudden breeze but paid no attention to it until the woman’s words broke his train of thought. He looked at the sky and noticed nothing unusual about the morning haze, then shrugged. “Sure is. What’re you a weatherman?” He said dryly and took a sip of his coffee.

Zach looked the owner over, licking his chapped lips. He was pretty attractive. A bit not his type, as he took something from his hands, but he shrugged it off. “You know what I mean,” he replied confidently. “The weird, unexplainable mysteries you’ve taken because you have some faith in what the seller is saying. I want to see those items.”

Madden found himself entertained at the boy's self-assurance. Smiling and nodding his head, he picked out a transparent box with a large blue diamond necklace placed carefully inside. He examined the stone, recalling the the man who came in to pawn it. He was skin and bones, most likely due to a chronic drug habit, and Madden half expected a worried mother to come in soon to reclaim her stolen possession. Things like that were sadly common in the pawn trade. "Well, you see this here..." he trailed off, as if waiting to tell an evocative story. “...has been called the heart of the sea. Everyone that has come to wear it has succumbed to a terrible death. Yet it somehow always ends up back here, as if it’s haunted.” He laughed at the bright eyed boy, clearly telling a lie.  “Would you like to buy it?” He added.

Zach stared blankly at him before he glanced at the object he had been holding a few minutes ago. At least, he thought it was a few minutes ago. He’d like to believe he can hold a stare, anyways. “I’m pretty sure it was a cryptic artifact that I was looking for,” he finally muttered, then rolled his eyes. “Do you have anything weird that people might’ve believed was touched?”

Madden peered at the lanky boy before him, a small smile forming across his lips at his waywardness. "Define touched." He added. Although he assumed he was one of his more unusual customers looking for something supernatural, he still needed to make certain. He could sense the boy in front of him to be human and he wasn't going to reveal his gifted items to just anyone.

Madden smiled at her and nodded. Her outlandish behavior amused him and somewhat piqued his curiosity. "Maybe I can help you?" He asked the taciturn girl, hoping she’d be able to elaborate more. "Where do you work?"

She feels like she’s suffocating in her, sucking in air that she technically doesn’t need. She digs into her purse, pulling out a wad of bills and throwing them at the stranger before fully running out the door.

Madden scoffed and smiled in mock amusement as he watched the bills fall to the ground. It was way more than necessary and he began to wonder if he had done something to scare the girl. He walked to the doorway and leaned against its frame with arms crossed, watching her leave hurriedly. "Thanks, come back again!" He hollered sarcastically and waved to her across the street, although still completely bewildered by the girl.

Kit’s eyes lit up at the sight of the Russian dolls. He, personally had never owned any, but he knew a girl growing up who did. He turned the toy around in his hand, inspecting it from all angles. Even if it was a knockoff, he would be happy to have it as a little reminder to his home. “It’s wonderful. How much is it?”

Madden smiled at the man, pleased he had liked the item. "Five bucks even." He stated, considering it didn't have much value anyways. Better to sell it off cheap to someone who'd enjoy them rather than letting the dolls rot away. "Say, you aren't Russian by any chance?" He asked, figuring the dark haired man had some sort of connection to the piece.

“What’s the point of a shop if you don’t sell things, Madden?” Her eyebrows raised her eyebrows as snakes started crawling out of the vase, at least that’s what appeared to happen, but it was impossible to tell by looking at it. The scratches appeared to start bleeding and she just smiled at the horrible sight. “Is there? Madde? Can you help me? Really?”

By now he’s gotten used to October’s antics, although the illusion still took him by surprise. He quickly squeezed his eyes shut and began to chant. “I don’t believe in fairies, I don’t believe in fairies!” Madden opened one eye slowly before huffing and shaking his head. “You know I really wish movies were more accurate and you would of just dropped dead, but I guess we can’t always get what we want. Perhaps I can help you by taking you out of your misery? It’ll do us all a favor actually.” He added dryly.

“I’m very sorry-” The words are rushed, and if she were capable-she’s sure that she’d be blushing. “I’m very sorry.” Her eyes meet his and she can’t bear to be here anymore, “I have to go.” And with that, she turns and runs right out of the shop.

“yeah that makes two of us--” he retorted but before he could finish speaking the girl began to leave. “wait, you still have to pay for this!” he followed her, crossing his arms angrily.  He could understand the embarrassment but he wasn’t going to let her just walk away.
