“We can definitely do that,” Maddie said with a grin. “Especially once January comes and I’m officially 21 and able to buy things. I’ll show you what things to order that will make people who want to drink with you feel content but won’t give you too much alcoholic content.”

“Logan.” he replied, and as always - despite having introduced himself as such for eight years, his first thought after was always liar.  He was slightly amused by her comment on his flaws, and actually grinned a little.  “I can’t imagine I can screw up walking someone home.” he shrugged, heading for the door. “But maybe you’ll prove me wrong.”

“Nice to meet you, Logan,” she murmured out of habit. In truth she wasn’t sure if his acquaintance was nice or not yet, though she supposed the offer to walk her home took things in a more positive direction. “I mean I guess you could toss the bag on the front steps at the last minute and then make a run for it, but I’ll optimistically assume that won’t happen,” she teased with a laugh. “You new here, Logan? I don’t believe I’ve seen you around...not that I’ve forgotten that Boston is a big place...just...this particular area is sort of tight knit.”

Minah allowed her flustered look to transform into something of an grateful, if wearly, expression. Of course her drink had fallen overboard. It was splashed all across the ground. Still, she didn’t mention it, simply waved over one of the workers towards the mess, “No, it’s fine. It wasn’t that good anyway.” Gingerly stepping away from the ever moving puddle, Minah added, “Be careful, the coffee is moving.”

“Isn’t it funny how even if it isn’t super good, it’s still sucky to watch something you paid for spill all over the ground.” Maddie shifted to tug at some napkins she’d had tucked underneath her arm. “Oh boy,” she murmured as the paper product got soaked in seconds. “This is kind of like putting a bandaid on a severed arm, huh?”

“She’d probably hit her head on the ceiling if she’d be on my shoulders”, Oly noted since he really wasn’t a short person and if you’d put someone on his shoulders you’d easily reach the ceiling, probably not in a good way. Olyver hummed a bit and nodded his head. It was nice to know there already were people who would be happy to help if there would be any need of a dog sitter. Was it this easy with kids too? Olyver really had no idea. “I can give you my phone number if you’d give me yours so I could send you a picture of the dog once we get it?”

“You do make mince meat out of my 5′3″. I wonder if the air quality is better up where you are,” Maddie teased with a giggle. She was always eager to offer her services. Since she really had no other sort of calling in her life, being helpful was her only since of purpose. “I like that idea,” she mused. Pulling out her phone, she scooted upwards, shifting to sit on the same step as he did.

Maddie: I'll keep pestering you until you're home safe and sound. How did you end up outside a creepy possibly not pizza place?

“Aw, darlin’, where’s the fun in life if ya’ can’t be a little silly every so often.” He smiles a little bit. “And the song isn’t, you’re right, but this is the manifestation of my excitement for her return.”

“Oh I’ve got no problem being silly,” she stated with sincere intensity in her tone. “But you gotta feel the music when you groove, got to become one with it. Less break dancing and more like...soulful interpretive dance to this song.” Maddie gave a laugh. “She never left, I’ve had her in my ipod all this time. But I know what you mean...it’s great to hear new music from her.”

“And our tearducts! I am like crying over here,” Soleil laughs, shaking her head. “yeah! I loved those. It was like…you know, I’m a boring lady sometimes, it was like living life safely on the edge.”

“You...boring? I don’t believe it.” Maddie cried out, clasping her hand against her chest. “But I do that too sometimes...live safely on the edge. I want shots of adrenaline now and then but nothing with consequences I wouldn’t want to live with.”

His lips curved into a smile from her statement before his blue eyes looked down to his phone, “…Does mine do that?” He asked. Chase had the phone for a few months now but he still didn’t know how to use it. Olyver just told him to carry it around so he did.

Maddie didn’t try to take the phone, lest he think she was a thief. But she did scoot closer to peer over his arm at the screen. “Oh yeah...yeah yours will do that too.” Her finger hovered over the screen with expertise. “See you hit the camera button here, then you go to settings...and there’s your panorama option right there.”

“I know I don’t.” he said simply. He didn’t necessarily feel obligated, and he was prepared to just leave her behind. But he was so tired of going through the same routine every day, over and over again that he needed to change things up once in a while. And if walking this woman home was what it would take to break the cycle of mediocracy, then so be it.  “I’m going that way too. I may as well join you and you can carry on pointing out all my other flaws.” he added.

Maddie lowered her arm. So be it then, she had companionship on the walk home and as of yet she wasn’t positive if that was a good or a bad thing. His comment about flaws made her let out a snort of laughter. “Oh I only give people shit for the flaws that directly impact my ability to get through my day. You’re safe for now. I guess I’ll take your name though, if we’re walking together.” Her gait was slow and lazy, bags swinging lightly besides her. “Mine is Maddie.”

“Well…I guess that would depend.” Logan shrugged. “Which way are you going?”  Why he had bothered asking, he didn’t know. He could have simply left it with a nod and carried on his own way. He had no answer to this question, but was starting to feel a little foolish.

Maddie lifted her arm, pointing towards the left. “That way...I’m a block or two up the street.” He was interesting...he’d seemed to have shifted from annoyed by the world to gallant gentleman in the blink of an eye, though it was like the former attitude was swirling around in his eyes. Part of her wanted to observe him further, the other half didn’t want to prolong his apparent discomfort. “It’s just two bags though...you won’t be leaving me in an ocean without a life preserver if you go your own way. It’s fine. You don’t get bad karma by getting pissy over pennies in a line, you don’t owe me anything.”

“I’m completely lost in what alcohol is involved, I know nothing and well, I should learn. I just don’t think it’s my thing, you know?”

“It’s good to learn even if it’s not your thing. For safety reasons...so you don’t take in a beverage you didn’t want to. Like if someone says “here have an iced tea” and it doesn’t taste right...you want to know what a long island iced tea tastes like so you can protect yourself.”

Oly nodded few times. “I got to know her more when she was almost six.” Before that Oly had always been at work and hadn’t seen his niece that often, or his family in general, but now things were so different. Now things were better, in a way. “I’m sure you’d be a great aunt.” Maddie seemed so happy and energized all the time Oly was sure she was great with kids. “I’d want a dog that‘s big and furry, preferably one that would need a lot of exercise. But I’ll let you know what kind of dog we found once we get it.”

“Awww that’s sweet. I bet she adores you, wants to ride on your shoulders all the time and got piggy back rides.” Maddie couldn’t wait for her sister to have kids, mostly because she felt unsure about whether she’d have her life figure dout enough to have any of her own. “Oh please do let me know. And if you ever need a dog sitter or anything i happily volunteer as tribute!”

Olyver really was one fluffy teddy bear when you got to know him, he just seemed like this huge stone statue that might bite your head off if you were careless. He just.. needed time to get used to the people around him and all. As his niece got mentioned Oly’s smile grew a bit since every time he thought of Ninian he just felt happy. “She’s eight, her name is Ninian. They live in New York so I don’t see them that often, but she might call me few times a week.” Olyver and Ninian had sort of special bond since Ninian had helped her uncle a lot after he got in the accident. Without Ninian Olyver’s life might be a lot different from now. “No, not any specific one. We were thinking of going to a shelter to look the ones that need a home. I know it won’t be a small dog since neither of us want anything smaller than a fooball. But we’ll see once we get there to look the dogs.”

“Ugh eight...that’s such a great age. Well no, all ages are great when you know how to navigate them. I did a lot of babysitting when I was younger. My sister is engaged now, looking to be married next summer, and I know as soon as she’s officially married she’s gonna be all about popping out babies. I’ve already got a secret stash of auntie toys and things.” Maddie gave an easy laugh, body orienting towards Olyver more. “Yeah I’m not one for the tiny yappy purse dogs.”

A tiny smile crawled on Olyver’s lips as Maddie started to talk about herself. He listened carefully every word and pressed them in his memory. Once she silenced Olyver felt like it was his turn to tell her the same things. “My parents are still together, I have a older sister too. She’s married and has a daughter. I don’t have any job right now and mostly I use my time training. My apartment is quite big, at the South End, I live there with my boyfriend and soon we’ll get a dog too so I won’t spend all my days alone while Chase is at work.”

He sounded like a family man. A kind hearted, soft spoken family man. Olyver was the best kind of superhero, the quiet one that no one noticed. But people like him did more good than any superhero. “Awww you have a niece? Do you get to see her often?” Her eyes lit up at the mention of a dog. “Do you have any breeds in mind? I want a dog one day but with the size of my apartment I wouldn’t be able to get the australian shepherd that I’m dying to have.”
