Temptations - myfrienderic This song doesn’t get enough internet love. It’s a sick slowed MTL style version of Missy and Beyonce’s Temptations track, by local DJ/producer/genius Myfrienderic as apart of the Saintwoods EP Never Trouble Trouble Until Trouble Troubles You.
Nights - Frank Ocean Ugh - this album... There is so much nostalgia and emotion conveyed, the features are subtle and the intros provoke thought and tie in so nicely to the stories in the songs (Andre 3000′s Solo Reprise!!!!). This, not being my absolute favourite, but defiantly one of them (especially at the switch around 3:45) kills it on the flow of the track in good ol’ Ocean fashion. Check out Self Control which is also in my top favourites. All round super interesting follow up to Channel Orange, very different style but the same introspection.
Musique - Borrowed Identity Borrowed Identity is kind of a legend of the new school house DJ’s and producers in my eyes. I am deeply obsessed with classic sounds from Disco to Funk to Motown and he so so elegantly brings a new face to some of these forgotten singles. As a DJ he makes it so these edit’s are so much easier to bring into a set than the originals. This one is edited from One Way’s “Music”, featuring Al Hudson. Groovin’ (feat. Yung Bae) - Flamingosis What I love so much about Flamingosis is the overwhelming number of amazing samples he has taken and flipped into his own disco-esq electronic grooves. Most recently I’ve died over his edit of The Independent’s track Leaving Me, which he altered and re-titled “Believe In Me”. Electronic jams the whole family can enjoy - this one in specific Groovin’ has that 80s disco aspect to it that is so infectiously funky. Lucy Sparks for the Arcademi (05)
New York 93 - Yaeji Yaeji a New Yorker, apart of the Godmode crew is a singer/producer DJ. She has the sweetest voice that is soothingly beautiful. A friend of mine sent me this and since I first heard it I feel like it has been stuck in my head... I’m kind of addicted. I don’t really know half of what she’s saying but the melodies of the lyrics tied with the production flow so nicely together, creating a sort of minimal electronic rnb. I’m also low key obsessed with everything she has done, including her track covering Mall Grab’s Guap, and her ever so gentil mix she did for DISCWOMAN. Lucy Sparks for the Arcademi (09)
Scrub - Rascal I really very little about Rascal, he’s relatively new to the game, I believe about 20 years old and from Germany. He’s also done an amazing edit of Brandy’s I Wanna Be Down (apparently the hottest track to edit these days), and has produced quite a bit for Atlanta rapper ELHAE, Little Simz (who is slowly becoming one of my favs in the game), Jay Prince, and Chance the Rapper. Check out the mellow summer vibes he brought to TLC’s mega anthem <3 (image via: @oolongpeak)
Baby Luv - Groove Theory I recently played the C-Man edit of this track an early RnB set and it brought me down a serious 90s RnB memory lane. It’s relatively perfect if you’re into biking in the sunshine, eating ice cream or smiling in general...
When You Know It - IAMNOBODI I discovered Berlin based producer IAMNOBODI on a Soulection X Stussy compilation from 2014 that two years later I still whip out in the summer months. It has some amazing tracks on it including some Goldlink, Jarreau Vandel, Zikomo, Sango, Mikos, etc etc. I’m also obsessed with his album Imani as a whole - it’s perfect, just the right amount of soul, rnb, and electronic drum kits.... also his recent remix of Smino’s Running!! No Hora (Ft. Faktiss & Chris McClenney) - Sango Ugh kay so I love Sango, it’s always gold. This album that he dropped last November Da Rochinha 3 has some realllllllly amazing tracks, he samples so many classic Brazilian Funk tracks with his electronic drums, the whole thing just feels like a mental vacation. I highly encourage you to go buy the entire thing on bandcamp if you like this sound, he only released a few tracks (including this one) on his soundcloud but its worth it. @arcademi
Very Very - Jay’dore
This is just the cutest, just in time for summer in Montreal. Jay’dore, local Montreal vocalist does an amazing pop edit of Project Pablo’s Follow It Up, featured on his “I Want to Believe” EP. Jay’s vocals go perfectly to make this super cute summer break up song that I’m just a little bit too obsessed with. <3
Guts - London O’Connor This song Guts is probably the biggest track off of London O’Connor’s synthy and melodic album O∆ “Circle Triangle”. I find it’s very reminiscent of summers as a teenager when you didn’t give a fuck about anything but relationships and being free from “authority”. Producing from the trendy side of NYC the California native just released another track in the same vein as the Circle Triangle album with Zane Lowe on Apple Music called Time to Go.
Girls @ (ft. Chance The Rapper) - Joey Purp Kay so I heard this track opening an episode of Othertone, Pharrell’s Apple Radio show (which I highly suggest you listen to all of them), and I legit thought it was new Neptunes production. The beat is simple, funky, and makes you wanna groove, with a perfect break, all in classic Neptune fashion. Looking into it more I discovered Joey Purp who was just about to release his second mixtape free iiiDrops as apart of Chance the Rapper’s Savemoney crew. Purps verses are charismatic and laid back, with the cherry on the cake being his Chance’s cheeky feature.
Are You That Somebody (The Tailors Remix) - Aaliyah I’ve always kinda gone to The Tailors as they are PERFECT when I’m playing a somewhat mainstream gig and I need house-mix-able edits of crowd pleasers. This one I found I actually really wanted to listen to as it’s a perfectly simple and I find everyone who has tried to edit this track always just puts too much to it. You can’t make it better, and you can’t re-make the song so just do this, no? ... Anyways, Aaliyah <3 for ever and always.
Dang! ft. Anderson .Paak - Mac Miller This song is so damn funky - Anderson .Paak is killing it this year! Also if this album Malibu doesn’t win a grammy next year there is something seriously flawed with the music industry. As a whole it is absolutely amazing, which is rare for an album of 16 tracks. But truuuuus me it’s everything.
Wuk Up (Nick Monaco Remix) - BOSQ ft. U-George I don’t know if anyone else loves this song as much as I do... but it’s one of those you just have to listen to over and over until it’s so drilled in your head that it’s not a song anymore but a way of life...
Prototype - Outkast If you were a fan of Outkast ever as a youth - which I can’t imagine you weren’t - then you probably have heard this song from “Speakerboxxx//The Love Below”. Going back through my crates this one stands out still as my favourite from the compilation, and also one of my favourites of all time. It still stands relevant. OKAGA, CA (ft. Clementine Creevy) - Tyler, The Creator This is one of my favourite songs, which came out on Cherry Bomb last spring. It has such a strong nostalgic nature, it’s one for falling in love to, for long summer road trips, for careless dancing in the rain. Tyler is one of my favourite artists in so many ways, but the main being his diverse music taste. His styles vary across genres and prove a music fan knowing his history and reflecting a deep love for music and creation. I first fell in love with him in summer of 2011, a few months after the release of Yonkers (which I thought was brilliant), but he started his Summer Camp mixes and I was shocked to find someone with so many songs that were also my favourites.
