Shouta can’t fucking breathe. The blood on the alleyway floor is rich and red, a sanguine nebula sprawling across dusty concrete, pooling in one spot that the police are crowded around; they’re trying to stop the inevitable panic once people have realised what’s happened…he already knows.

“Hey, man, let’s get out of here,” Yamada says quietly, gently guiding him away from the scene. Shouta wheezes, breath stuttering in his throat as his friend pulls him further and further away from the bright flashing lights and the stench of iron. He’s so very kind, in a way that Shouta doesn’t think he deserves.

“It’s okay, you’re alright,” the other boy soothes, rubbing his back, voice warm and honey-laden, even though he must be stressed too, seeing so much blood, knowing that somebody had died inches from where they’d just been standing. “Listen, I know you live nearby but…well, it’s just…the police said they’re only really targeting, uh, homeless folk. You’ll be okay!” Yamada says a little clumsily.

That’s just the thing, though.

Shouta is homeless.

“Jesus, kid. How old even are you? Thirteen?” the stranger, Oji, mocks, dropping his bottom lip in mimicry of Shouta’s incredulous expression.

“I’m fifteen, actually,” he snaps, bristling like an angry cat. If he activated his quirk and let his hair stand on end around his bruised face, he’d probably complete the picture.

“Ooh, so grown up. A whole fifteen years old,” Oji laughs, plucking one of the pastries from the wrapper and plopping it into his mouth. He doesn’t bother finishing chewing before he adds, vastly ignoring the way that Shouta’s hackles are hunched around his ears, “well, you’d have to be fifteen, wouldn’t you?”

“What?” Shouta asks, brow furrowing in an equal mixture of irritation and confusion.

Oji holds his hands out wide, tilting his head like it’s obvious. “To be in the sports festival, I mean.” Shouta freezes. Shit. Double shit, actually. He’s not supposed to know that - Shouta hadn’t considered he might be recognisable. “Tell me, Mr. Fifteen-Actually. What’s a UA student like you doing on the streets?”

Shameless plug but please go read my fiancées Aizawa origin fic, they've spent so much time working on it and (in my totally unbiased opinion) is one of my favourite fics ive ever read. They've only just started posting but have lots of chapters lined up for a weekly schedule as well as plans for sequels to the series.
