I know Ariel's canon now and I love her so much. Tempted to make the canon!verse an AUish thing.
btw. Hi guys!
My mindset today.
Sorry guys, I need to vent. My anxiety is kicking in and I am SO not in a good mood right now.
So today was just a normal day. I woke up after talking to my boyfriend on the phone on his way home from work and I ended up passing out once I got off the phone with him. Woke up, felt refreshed, only to find that my roommate needed my help with her video thingie. Totally fine, whatever. I didn’t wanna have to get up but whatever.
We get done with that, and I can’t fucking get into my room. Why? Because the new door locks that my school INSISTED on buying for no fucking reason are being updated and I had to wait for the RD to let me in. Whoop de fucking doo.
After that I go to class. I find out when I’m on my computer that the Quidditch match that we had scheduled THREE HOURS AWAY on Saturday at noon was moved to Saturday at 10am. WHAT. THE FUCK. And this is after the same fucking person told me I’m doing my math wrong about how much people need to pay me for gas. BITCH I KNOW MY CAR BETTER THAN YOU, DO NOT QUESTION MY MATH. I DID IT THREE TIMES.
So I tried messaging my mom. Because I have to be one of the people driving and I’m seeing if she can let me and my teammates I’m driving spend the night on Friday so I only have to drive 2 hours instead of three in the morning.
She hasn’t answered me.
And then Daniel tells me his hives are acting up really badly and it’s so bad he may not go to work. And then he says he’s going to fencing. Boys, I will never understand them. Either way, worried about my baby. :/
NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS TUESDAY IS A FUCKING NIGHTMARE.
I like plans! I like knowing what is going on, when it’s going on and what we’re doing beforehand and when people poke HOLES in my plan I hate having to scramble to fix it!
"My name… Tiger Lily. I am the daughter of the chief in Neverland… But something is not right. I…

This is what happens when I’m without OUAT for too long. I come up with elaborate subplots for Season 3.

"Oh I’d love that, Jim! I’ve always wondered that that doohickey did and I’m glad to have finally met someone who knows it’s function," she answered, grinning up at him still as she pulled herself into an indian-style sitting position when she listened to his story.
Ariel watched him closely, totally ensconced in his story as he started using his hands to tell it along with him. It was almost as if she was witnessing it herself. She loved stories like these, with pirates and adventures. Sometimes she wished she’d been on an adventure like the one he’d been on so she had some stories she could tell to someone.
It wasn’t until Jim got to the point when he spoke of the officers being killed, and her expression darkened at the story. Such cruelties were spoken frequently of by her father when she was growing up, but she scooted closer and placed her head on his shoulder when he fell silent, hoping it would bring him some sort of comfort. “I’m sorry for your loss, Jim."
Ariel blinked when she felt his gaze on her again, smiling when she felt the warmth return to his features. Jim was back, he was no longer in that dark place he’d gone to for those few moments. “My tail’s nothing special. We as merpeople are born with the ability to change from fins to legs, but when my mother was killed by pirates when I was a child my father kept that ability from all of us. He granted it back to me when I saved my prince the second time before we got married and I’ve been able to do it ever since. My father felt that even though I had no connection with the human world to hold onto, my daughter was still half human, and he wanted us to have the option to visit the human world if we wanted to."
The head on his shoulder took Jim by surprise, but he didn’t so much mind the weight of it. It was grounding, not that he felt he needed that kind of assistance to find stability. But it had been helpful in the moment. Still, he brushed off the apology with a wave of his hand. “It was years ago-” that part was true, “-and it’s really just a story now.” That part was closer to a fib, but a harmless white lie that affected no one and nothing. Ariel didn’t know him well enough to catch him out, as far as he knew, and he considered the matter closed.
Her story was much more interesting, in any case. Maybe not the explanation itself, but the dynamics of the characters in the tale - no pun intended. An overbearing, overprotective father, a mother killed by pirates, a daughter with an ability lost lest she follow in the latter parent’s footsteps. In the latter parent’s wake? Something about the phrasing seemed off, considering the lack of legs, but he tried not to concentrate on it. More than likely it would just make his head spin, and magic had enough ability to do that already, thanks.
“So your daughter,” Jim started in again, already with the questions in mind rolling off his tongue, “even though she’s half-human, she can still…” The sentence trailed off as he struggled to find phrasing that felt right. “…tail?” It was a verb now, apparently, and he silently cursed himself for sounding like a blithering idiot. “I mean, she’s not stuck one way or the other since she’s not fully…?” Again with the fading out, though this time he wasn’t sure if he’d crossed the line into offensive. Who knew where polite interest ended and rude interrogation began, especially when word choice was so important?
Reminding a mother that her child was a half-breed probably didn’t count as polite conversation, and something stricken flashed through his eyes at that realization. Abrasive hadn’t been his goal, and especially not when he had the ability to talk to someone inherently magical and break down what they knew. His offer to explain the sextant would only get him so far, only buy him so much leeway, and then he was shit out of luck and could only hope that the legends of mermaids dragging sailors to their deaths were exaggerations.
"Well, I'm not entirely sure. She was a baby when she and I went back to the sea," Ariel responded, not bothered at all by his questions and placing a hand on his to show him she wasn't upset. "My father changed her into her mermaid form and I was able to shift on my own and when the curse hit Melody was almost three years old. I never tried seeing if she could do it or not. Food for thought, I suppose."
Ariel noted the look in his eyes and gave his hand a gentle squeeze, smiling at him. "Don't worry. It's alright. Melody being born of the land and of the sea was a momentous occasion. She was the first of her kind, and my father adored her. Sometimes I wonder what my mother would have said, you know?" she asked, her expression softening as she looked out to the horizon.
It was days like these after the curse was broken that Ariel would reflect on her mother. Would Athena have approved of everything her daughter went through? Would she be angry? Had Ariel's life been nothing but a disappointment? It bothered her, to say the least, to never know what her mother would have thought, but she always tried to hide it. You can't change the past.

Ariel had to release a laugh at the look on his face. She’d forgotten how comfortable she’d gotten with people to be telling them about herself from the other world, but she guessed that had to do with the fact that everyone knew about magic and it was not something that someone would tell her wasn’t real. That was never fun. She looked back up at him and tilted her head slightly at the man at his words. “Yeah, I guess he wasn’t. But I was sixteen, what the hell did I know, right?" she asked, giving him a small smile. “But que sera sera."
Ariel grinned when he mentioned the sextant in the window, bouncing a little in excitement. “Yeah! I love that sexton! It’s one of my favorites! Though, until recently I wasn’t entirely sure what the name of it was, but it’s still there. My window just got a little more crowded when I got more shipments in. Though, lately it seems more people wander in since they know some of the things I have belong to them. Did that belong to you?"
The mermaid’s eyes shined at the prospect of a story, wanting to know all about the handsome man and his adventures, and she felt her grin widen when he bargained with her. “Deal. But I can’t promise it’s an interesting story on my part. Go ahead, you go first."
"Not mine, no," Jim replied with a shrug, “but I know how to use it. I could show you sometime, if you’d want." He couldn’t help the way his grin mirrored Ariel’s; she was so enthusiastic about the little things, the naval navigation devices in her window, but could let the bigs things pass right by as though they meant nothing. It was almost bizarre, but entertaining nonetheless.
And she turned out to not be the biggest on negotiating, for what it was worth. Alright, so he’d be the one to give first, even if, as she claimed, her own explanation wasn’t particularly interesting. And perhaps to someone who lived with magic as an everyday occurrence, it wasn’t. But he’d never encountered the stuff before Storybrooke, and even now was still trying to wrap his mind around its existence, even if it wasn’t something that could be rationalized. Sometimes all it took was extra explanation, and though not everyone had the patience to break down their reality int bite-sized pieces for him, there were some who didn’t mind. And when such a person surfaced, they were too rare to let go; it made far more sense to keep hold until he’d heard it all.
So he drew in a breath, tilted his head back to stare up at the sky, and started his story. It had, Jim explained, been a day very much like this one - sunny, just a faint breeze, but much earlier in the morning - when the Swiftsure had found itself under attack. The assailant’s ship had crept in through the fog that obscured the rolling tops of the waves, looming out of the sunlight with flags, black and red, flying. No quarter would be offered.
For the next few minutes, Jim wove voice and visuals and verbs, action and adverbs and ardor into his story, using his hands to show just how the two vessels had maneuvered about each other, the precise way in which, after bring boarded, the crew of the privateering craft had defended their decks. But it had been no use. Taken by surprise and outnumbered from the start, the crew was overwhelmed by the pirates. Those who weren’t officers had been set loose as a warning, and those with commissions had been put to the sword.
He fell quiet after that, tip of his tongue darting out to swipe across his lips, stare averted and distant, as though he wasn’t seeing the mermaid or the water in that moment. But he blinked and it was gone, grin returning as he glanced back to Ariel, cocking an eyebrow and changing the subject. “So? About that tail of yours."
"Oh I'd love that, Jim! I've always wondered that that doohickey did and I'm glad to have finally met someone who knows it's function," she answered, grinning up at him still as she pulled herself into an indian-style sitting position when she listened to his story.

"You weren’t?" she asked, tilting her head slightly as her blue eyes focused on Jim. She’d heard from Dr. Wale about how others came from other lands, like how he came from the world without color and Jefferson came from Wonderland, but she wondered what place Jim was from. She listened closely to his words, nodding when appropriate, but soon she felt a small grin form on her features. He was a sailor! A real sailor! Not the kind for recreation like Eric was. He was the real thing!
"You were a sailor? That sounds amazing, Jim! Did you go on any adventures? Have you lived on the sea all your life?" she found herself asking, her excitement getting the best of her as she looked at him. Ariel was always curious about sailors. Sure, her fellow mermaids interacted with sailors, but that usually involved the men dying in some way. That was never good.
Geez this man was beautiful. What the hell was she doing? Please don’t be staring. Dammit Ariel focus! He’s talking to you! “No, not always. It’s nice to have a break every so often, though. I like ships. It’s always so peaceful on them," she mused, turning back to look him in the eye when he asked about the Enchanted Forest. “Well, to be completely honest I was a princess. My father was the king of Atlantica, and I fell in love with a human when I was sixteen. Daddy didn’t like that too much and he destroyed my collection of human things I’d collected over the years. Long story short, a sea witch made me a deal to give me legs in exchange for my voice and she almost destroyed my chances with my prince but we got my voice back and we thought we killed her, happily ever after, right? If you’ve read that book ‘The Little Mermaid’ it’s the basic idea. I don’t turn into sea foam at the end and I got my prince…"
Ariel’s expression darkened slightly, looking out to the horizon. “Things didn’t work out in the end. The sea witch somehow survived and after I had our first and only child he ran off with her. Guess happy endings only happen for people who don’t disobey their parents, y’know?" she asked, giving him a small smile. “During the curse I owned an antique shop. It’s over down the street from Granny’s? Maybe you’ve seen it. All kinds of goodies in there. But I feel I’m dampening the mood, tell me of your adventures Jim."
Jim hesitated, then shook his head. He wasn’t particularly fond of being the odd one out, even if in a place like Storybrooke it was difficult to be considered odd in the first place. It was, however, easier to earn that label by admitting you weren’t from the same place as everyone else. He didn’t have Whale’s ire about being dragged here, not any more, but there was a reluctance to the movement, even so. The flood of questions followed close on that nonverbal response and pulled another smile out of him, though he settled back, letting them go unanswered, when Ariel started talking.
Alllllright, so he hadn’t expected a… mermaid princess with a missing kid who felt comfortable spilling her life’s history to a veritable stranger she’d met all of five minutes ago. Who did that? It made him, to be completely honest, a little uncomfortable to have A Comprehensive History Of Ariel dropped unceremoniously in his lap, but he supposed there weren’t really strangers in a place like Storybrooke after twenty-eight years, so maybe that made it acceptable in her head. A slow nod was most of the response he could muster, trying to digest everything he’d been told. “Sounds like it’s been a hell of a ride, though I can’t say your human prince seems like a particularly good guy.” He bit his tongue. No, no, it wasn’t his place to make commentary on other people’s life choices, no matter how much he might want to, but it was too late to take this last one back.
Fortunately, he was somewhat saved by the mention of the antique shop, which was slightly less in line with the bizarre and overwhelming. “I know the place! It was right on the way to work, during the curse. You had a sextant in the window once." Even as the sentence left his tongue, Jim realized it seemed odd to remember so small a detail. But that device in particular had struck a chord within him during the curse that he hadn’t been able to explain until its breaking.
Then the topic was moved back to him, and the sailor smiled slightly. “Adventures? I don’t know that I’d call them adventures; that seems a bit too glamorous for how they were.” Indeed, it was a word that ignored the blood and the fear and the pain that came with the time he’d spent on the sea. He appreciated the show of interest, though, and maybe he could use a story as a bargaining chip. “How about this: I’ll tell you a story if you explain the- the tail thing. How you can change it to legs and back, anything like that.”
Ariel had to release a laugh at the look on his face. She'd forgotten how comfortable she'd gotten with people to be telling them about herself from the other world, but she guessed that had to do with the fact that everyone knew about magic and it was not something that someone would tell her wasn't real. Ariel felt her blush darken and spread to her chest, now more than a little aware of the fact she was a little too scantily clad to be in public with her seashells covering her top half and her tail trailing behind her. Whoops. Oh! The attractive sailor was talking! Listen, Ariel, listen! Don’t get distracted by his eyes! And the boat. “Jim…" she tried the name on her lips, smiling at the sound of it. “The pleasure is all mine, Jim."
The redhead reached up and shook his hand, slowly. Dammit, the eyes again. Before she knew it she was sitting on the edge of the boat, tail gleaming in the sunlight as she blinked up at him. “I swim here every day these days… It calms me. Then again I did it when we all were cursed as well, but without the tail," she explained, gesturing to the green scales she had. Ariel sighed, annoyed with her fins after a moment of sitting on the ship and soon the tail shifted into her legs, a flowing green skirt replacing the green scales.
Ariel tilted her head slightly up at him, her eyes scanning the vessel she was currently on as she smiled. “So, you are a sailor? Were you one in the Enchanted Forest?" she asked, curiosity getting the best of her as she pulled her legs onto the boat with her.
It was as though Ariel was tasting his name, rolling it about on her tongue to see how if felt before letting it slide out into the open air. Her small smile was infectious, and Jim found himself grinning crookedly back at her, though he couldn’t say why. It might have been the seashell top, but he was trying to not focus on it because heaven help the impression that would give. Her hand was cool, damp in his own, and he was sure he could wrap his long fingers around hers time and a half. Might have tried to, too, if he was paying less attention to what he was doing. Or if he was paying less attention to-
She had a tail.
A tail. He hadn’t seen it under the water, not at first, but perched on the side of the skiff, it became obvious. Especially since its scales - not unlike those of a fish, some clinical part of his mind noted far more calmly than the rest of him felt - reflected sunlight brightly. It would explain the swimming, as well as the ease with which she’d crossed from dock to craft. Only then the tail was gone, replaced by a set of legs encased in a skirt, and he was beginning to feel more than a little lost.
Mermaids were- were sailors’ legends, figures of myth and the kind of magic that hadn’t existed in his land. Even this long after the breaking of the curse, the kind of magic that Regina - and apparently several others, as well - had dealt in was still taking a bit of getting used to. And now the fantastical was coming alive in front of him. Some of that hesitancy and surprise, he was sure, must have showed in his face, but he pulled in a breath until his lungs ached, let it out slowly, and forced his grin back up, a little smaller this time.
“I was never in the, ah, Enchanted Forest,” he replied a little distractedly, running a hand back through his. “Mine was a different world than most. But I was a sailor there, yeah - sea cook, actually, but…” He let the sentence go with a shrug. It was the same thing, more or less, and bought him time to wrap his mind around what he’d seen. “With a tail like that, I’d think you wouldn’t need a ship to get around, no? So what did you do back in your… Enchanted Forest?”
"You weren't?" she asked, tilting her head slightly as her blue eyes focused on Jim. She'd heard from Dr. Wale about how others came from other lands, like how he came from the world without color and Jefferson came from Wonderland, but she wondered what place Jim was from. Ariel sighed as she glided through the water near the docks. It was nice and peaceful these days; the curse was broken, the Evil Queen was gone-for now. Unfortunately, that also meant that Henry was missing, but she was confident that Emma and the others would find him. Henry would be home soon. If Emma was anything like Ariel was with Melody, she’d find him.
Green scales shone in the sunlight, the redhead gliding beneath the water until she caught sight of a lone ship. She’d seen this ship before, even during the curse. This belonged to that one man… What was his name? Chris? She wasn’t entirely sure what his identity was in their old world, but Ariel was pretty sure she’d seen him before.
The mermaid swam to the small boat, pulling herself up to peek at the man, only to see a pair of gorgeous eyes staring back at her. “Oh. Hi! I’m so sorry, I was just curious, and I’ve seen you around before and I never knew your name and—" Oh my god Ariel, shut up and get to the point. The mermaid flushed a deep shade of red, pulling herself up and smiling up at him. “Hi, I’m Ariel. Nice to meet you."
To take the Gunn out on the water usually meant solitude. It meant leaving the Storybrooke-sized bustle behind and time to himself. And, when the curse had first been broken, it had meant no noise from the swarms of people finding each other as they didn’t realize they’d been separated for twenty-eight years. Because of course those people had each other, had friends and lovers they knew and could be reunited with.
Jim wasn’t still bitter. Not at all.
Okay, maybe he was still a little bitter, but that came as part of being a singularity and lacking, as far as he’d found, anyone with whom he could reunite. His skiff was the obvious answer, and this far from the docks, Jim could forget the void on land and let the rocking of the waves put him in mind of a place he could now remember, but, like the rest of the town’s inhabitants, could not return to. He’d been staring at nothing, at the shine of sun on wave-crests, lost in thought, when the little craft had dipped abruptly to one side, unbalanced without warning.
The sailor all but threw himself to the other side of the boat without thinking, evenly distributing the weight, and spun, more than a little worried about what he would see. A girl. Woman? He couldn’t tell how old she was, clinging to the side of the Gunn and staring back at him. And chattering away like a wind-up toy that would never run down its spring.
“I-” He blinked, offered a smile that did its best to overcome the surprise, and cautiously stuck out his hand. Whether it was meant to be for a handshake or for an invitation to come aboard with a little assistance, he wasn’t sure. “Jim. I’m Jim. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ariel.” This smile was a touch more real, a tad easier, before his gaze slid away to eye the distance between vessel and dock. “You swim all the way out here?”
Ariel felt her blush darken and spread to her chest, now more than a little aware of the fact she was a little too scantily clad to be in public with her seashells covering her top half and her tail trailing behind her. Whoops. Oh! The attractive sailor was talking! Listen, Ariel, listen! Don't get distracted by his eyes! And the boat. "Jim..." she tried the name on her lips, smiling at the sound of it.
