The thing that drives me absolutely around the bend with The Prestige is that Nolan is focused completely in the least interesting parts of it (the twist and everything tied to it).

Do you know what's fucking fascinating? That a man kills himself, every night, over and over again, in the same way that his wife died, all in an attempt to destroy someone he hates.

How do you not what to pry that man apart and study him under a microscope?

It's so fucked up and it's glorious and it's amazing and Nolan has no fucking interest in it all and it's a fucking travesty.

And they are fucking on every surface, all over the house, and for Amy, of course this is not even REALLY about desire. Or at least, not about sexual desire. This is about her wanting to destroy her life, wanting to exert control, wanting to have some kind of agency in her own house where she feels like a prisoner. She is fucking on every surface, because fucking some young hot Korean dude all over it makes it HERS. She is asserting herself in this space in a way she does not feel entitled to in her daily life. It's about sexuality as power, and as her getting to make choices in her own home even if they're' wrong.

And so, again, poor fucking Paul, this is not about him or for him at all. He, I think, genuinely likes Amy, and we can talk about how naive that is all day long, but it is true. I think Paul is, in most ways, genuinely doing his best. But he cannot see what Amy is doing here, and frankly I thjink if you told him, he wouldn't listen.

In the early days of this show, i talked about her masturbating with the gun and how it was about the eroticizing of her own self-destruction, and it's the same thing here, only Paul is her gun, and the notion of destroying her own life has taken on another tone.

Paul is such a sweet kid! He wants to have a positive relationship, he genuinely enjoys talking to Amy and connecting with her. Don't get me wrong, he also is totally down if she were ever willing to get sexual with him, but he really does want to have a human connection. He's a nice kid!

Which makes it even more of a shame that he's caught up in the incredible bullshit surrounding him. There is no way that any of this ends up good for Paul. Amy and Danny are both people trying to set themselves on fire, and Paul is right in the middle of it.

This is so uncomfortable for me, I am dying. Both of this actors are absolutely killing this,. the subtle way George is clearly emotionally affected by someone feeling something about his work, that he feels is so....easy to not appreciate. He may even feel himself that they aren't that good, they aren't the vision he had, things like that. But here is someone having an EMOTION about something he DID, and that is so...at least, I find it really personally affecting.

And knowing Danny is using this just to hurt someone, it KILLS ME.

YES OUT THE EMOTIONAL SCREWS TO DANNY.

I'm not even a big George fan, but you can tell how patently sad and alone he feels, and how he doesn't feel encouraged in his creative life, and he feels left behind by Amy. That this completely fake friendship he has is a lifeline.

And Danny sees it too, because he IS NOT THE MONSTER HE THINKS HE IS. Or even wishes he were. He just keeps doing stupid shit over and over and over again!

I thought we were the same age, Isaac. In which case, you were not in the LA Riots, you were like, 6. Even if you're older than me, you can't be THAT much older. You would have been too young to really been meaningfully involved in what was going on there.

But so much of this is about Isaac's attempts to make himself grand, the same way that he lets himself think that he's a big business man, an underworld mover and shaker, when in reality he's some pathetic chump fencing stolen goods. There's everything to say about Isaac and the way he imagines himself in this. A hero. A defender of his people.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE. So the destruction of Koreatown during the LA Riots was about, well, a lot of things and that's neither my time in history nor the scope of this liveblog, but what it is with relation to this show, is the idea of attacking someone you perceive as being the problem, or even problem-adjacent, because you cannot attack the intangible problem that's actually causing you all this misery and grief. This is going to flatten years of California tensions between Black and Korean people and grossly oversimplify a major historical event with a lot of moving parts, but: The rioters destroyed Koreatown to vent rage at systems of race and policing that they saw Koreans as being in league with even if destroying their stores did nothing to help any of it.

The same with how Danny and Amy attack each other as a way of venting all the rage they have at the misery of their own lives! It is a way of letting violence feel like control.

AMAZING. So, just like Amy did with his brother, exploiting his desires for connection and love and to feel like the kind of guy who can be desired (Man, justice for Paul on so many levels) Danny is exploiting the fact that George needs connection too! I actually love that this is going into, in a way, I guess, that need for connection in men that ISN'T sexual, and that's something that doesn't always get fed for a variety of reasons. Something that George seems only too happy to open himself up for.

It's so interesting to see how willing these two are to destroy other people in the pursuit of their desire to destroy the other. At what point do you think you might actually be the villain here? How much did that bike cost you, Danny? Is this the best way to move toward any kind of future, or are you are you so pulled into this death spiral that you can't see anything else?

Obsession continuing to just fucking kick ass. This is Obsession's SEVENTH weekend. It beat out Jackass' first weekend. It beat out Stephen Spielberg's Disclosure Day's third weekend.

I'm so fucking excited that this is happening to a horror movie and, as an added bonus, it's a horror movie that fucking deserves the accolades it's getting.

And the light in Obsession?

Holy shit the lighting in some scenes?

Fucking spectacular.

I know y'all who have followed me for the a while will understand what a big deal it is when I say:

Obsession is the fucking scariest movie I've seen in ages, maybe ever.

I fucking screamed at one point. I had moments where, literally, I felt the hair on my arms raise.

If you can go see this in theaters, go see this in theaters.

Holy fucking shit.

I get so fucking excited when this happens with movies, especially if they're small indie horror movies.

The shaded part is what the industry was expecting Obsession to do. Make a bit of money and then plateauing. But the blue line is what actually happened. It didn't just go up a little bit it had been consistently going up for 5 weeks now.

I need you all the understand, movies in theaters don't do this. This is now how movie theaters work. Movies don't go up the second weekend, they go down. They plateau, they don't keep going up.

Fucking Disney, whose Star Wars movie came out Obsession's second weekend, wishes it could see this kind of growth. I mean, for Star Wars' second weekend which is Obsession's third, Obsession beat out Star Wars. It made more money than Star Wars, on its third weekend.

I know not everyone is as interested in horror or the way the industry treats horror but this is legitimately so cool and so exciting for horror. And it makes me genuinely, giddily happy.
