Two guards at the alley entrance. Another sweeping from the opposite side. Too fast. No exit. No time.
Ava grabbed his arm. “Don’t say a word.”
John blinked. “What—”
She spun him toward her and kissed him.
Hard.
It wasn’t soft or romantic. It was sharp, decisive—like a punch masked in velvet. Her fingers curled into his collar like she meant to yank him closer or knock him out. For one second, John didn’t move. His brain just short-circuited. Then instinct kicked in and his hands settled on her waist—hesitant, almost unsure.
Boots scraped past them. A muttered curse. The guards barely glanced their way.
Just two civilians making out in a shadowed alley.
Then it was over.
Ava pulled back first, eyes flicking toward the guards disappearing around the corner. She didn’t look at him right away—just listened. Waited. Once the coast was clear, she stepped back like nothing happened.
John was still blinking. “…Was that really necessary?”
She smirked. “You want me to go back and ask if they would’ve believed a couple of accountants hiding behind a dumpster?”
“I mean,” he muttered, clearing his throat, “you could’ve warned me.”
“And miss the look on your face?” Ava shrugged and started walking. “Come on, keep going.”
John fell into step beside her. “So are we pretending that didn’t happen?”
“Oh no,” she said, without looking at him. “I’m never letting you forget that.”
