IUCAA – Where astronomy comes alive
IUCAA is remarkable in so many ways that while writing about it, brevity is not a viable option. From the point it was conceived as a centre for excellence in astronomy, the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics’ story has travelled from one landmark
to another. Prof Jayant V Narlikar, the founder Director and emeritus professors now, initiated the centre’s establishment in Pune in 1988. “The first idea was to have a place where there is absolutely excellent work in astrophysics being done. The second thing was to, unlike other institutes, integrate it completely with the university systems; to set up a centre where people from all universities will come and continue their research. And from where they will take back the technology and inspirations with them,” says IUCAA Director, Professor Ajit K Kembhavi. Professor Kembhavi summarises IUCAA’s phenomenal achievements in the field of astronomy and astrophysics research and popularisation by highlighting three points - the institute does good research in theoretical and observational areas; provides very good facilities for research; and does everything it does with people from different universities. About some of the more tangible achievements, he says, “We have an observatory with 2 metre optical telescope located at Girawali; we have a really good computer centre with high performance computing facilities; we have set up a very good instrument laboratory; and we are involved with the first Indian astronomy space mission - ASTROSAT.” The popularisation of science, in particular astronomy, is part of the institute’s constitution, and is realised through the IUCAA Public Outreach Programme. Durgesh Tripathi, Assistant Professor, says, “This works in two parts – through an astronomy outreach programme with events like sky-watching, lectures and more, and also through access to rural programmes at rural science centres; and Science Toys Programme by making objects out of materials considered useless, and explaining science, especially physics, through them. From time to time we have lectures and workshops for school students and teachers. We celebrate National Science Day on February 28, to convey public about the research work we are involved-in through various posters, seminars, question and answer sessions, video demonstrations and more; last year we had about 10,000 people at the National Science Day.” Gulab Chand Dewangan, Associate Professor, adds, “IUCAA has set up six resource centres at various universities across the country to promote research in Astronmy and astrophysics, where IUCAA provides necessary facilities - like computing, essential books and organize schools and workshops. In addition, in coordination with the resource centres IUCAA conducts public outreach workshops for school students and teachers to expand the awareness in astronomy across the country”. For its academic achievements, and for making astronomy more fun, IUCAA is Truly Made in Pune.

Amruttulyas: Sweet spots where Puneri ideas brew
There is one traditional Puneri legacy that no amount of cappuccinisation can challenge to extinction. It is the Amruttulya, a.k.a. a stall that sells tea so good that it is comparable to nectar! It should be noted though that Amruttulyas stopped being mere peddlers of eccentrically sweet chaha many generations ago - they are today the social equalizers of this city.
You will find more diversity in an Amruttulya's clientele than on any national integration ad. From rickshaw drivers, to college students, to domestic helps, to corporate professionals in a suit and tie garb, everyone gathers at the traditional tea stall for a break, and of course, for sips of some of the best chai in the city. From Hadapsar to the Peths to Pradhikaran, these stalls are peppered around the city.
Amruttulyas began as simple refreshment outlets where owners, usually sitting cross-legged on a wooden low stool, would boil and re-boil sweet tea in one resilient brass vessel, and use a well-worn cloth as sieve while filling out countless cups and flasks.Even today, they remain small shops (sometimes holes in walls), where wooden benches with a sunmica finish play host to varied sets of people everyday. On the menu will be plain chaha and a ‘special’ chaha, (which generally means less water, more milk), but in recent years, some have added a decent variety of snacks like samosa, dhokla, et al, to the list. Summers usually mean a spike in the demand for kokam juice and taak, and some amruttulyas will serve these to you as you like it - in steel tumblers or in plastic pouches with straws.
Amruttulyas became part of this city’s everyday reality because no place compares in satisfying the two basic needs of a Punekar –1) debating about everything under the sun, (family troubles, misal, PMT buses, cricket, American elections, women’s fashion, Bollywood gossip, office skirmishes, marriages, divorces, the latest iPhone, the oldest wada- this list can be dangerously long!); and 2) the undying romance with maddeningly sweet tea. This is the place where even strangers won't hesitate before plopping right beside you and commenting on the day’s weather, and how it used to be better!
Amidst the frenzied pace of an ambitious city, visiting an Amruttulya is like taking a step back in time. This is a place where a Punekar can indulge in free-flowing conversations over non-fancy cups and saucers, and the occasional cream roll. This is where he finds kindred souls from all walks of life, sitting around – people unafraid of talking, laughing and slurping tea, aloud!
The experience of chai at an Amruttalya is truly Made in Pune.
