We define adulthood as a point at which you can leave a community behind and start out on your own. Imagine if, instead, it was a point at which a community could rely on you to show up for others? -
What We’ve Learned From a Decade of Adulting
By Kathryn Jezer-Morton
good morning. it is good, right? every time the honey colored air shines through these windows, i am filled with the color yellow and i am happy. i live here; this is mine. this is what my pinterest pins and vision boards have been filled with in years past. and now it's here in front of me, taking my breath away with every sunrise and sunset. this is home. in october two years ago i wrote in my journal about big windows and high ceilings- two requirements for my first ever home. every day i am grateful.
“Keep a notebook. Travel with it, eat with it, sleep with it. Slap into it every stray thought that flutters up into your brain. Cheap paper is less perishable than gray matter, and lead pencil markings endure longer than memory.”

it’s time for me to start writing. i feel it in my bones.
I am not prone to loneliness. In this, I am lucky. I miss people, but particular people. Not just the idea of people. I don’t need a crowd. But I like the way I move in an empty house. It feels more like moving around in my brain, from room to room I go on wandering. It is not like that outside of the house. Where the strangers are. As a gendered body, I move with more fear, even in the safety of my wide suburban streets. We all know women end up dead in ditches daily. In the movie Coal Miner’s Daughter, when an unknown person comes into the holler, a kid yells, “Stranger coming!” My heart yells that now when I see someone I don’t know. What do they want from me? Do they have a mask? Why are they walking so closely?

…no more waiting to become…it’s time to simply be…
Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen.
In her poem “The Summer Day,” Mary Oliver asks, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do/ with your one wild and precious life?” My reply, for now, is simple: Sit on the porch. It’s not half-bad. For what is the porch if not a place to chat with neighbors, to marvel at the hummingbird at the feeder, to listen to the wind in the chimes? An altar for cynics, an altar for the erotic, an altar for the future.
work is a false idol
When we begin to live from within outward, in touch with the power of the erotic within ourselves, and allowing that power to inform and illuminate our actions upon the world around us, then we begin to be responsible to ourselves in the deepest sense

the other day we were talking about the ideal body and the idea of it being thin and white and able bodied. my friend brought up how she never knew thin bodies were the ideal because she is black and in black and brown culture, thin bodied aren’t the ideal. in the moment i thought hmm, maybe my family skipped that because my weight has always been an open topic. but then i realized it was also a rejection of my curves and my culture to want to be thin. i’m grateful to be (mostly) beyond that now.
