Dependant Independance
You don't like coffee Or hummus.
Your dad loves blueberries, And rocks his chair back when he laughs.
Your house smells like Meyers lavender cleaner, Faintly mixed with Old Spice. The couch is covered with a thin layer Of  Golden Retriever hair.
You live on 1st street.
The first time you held my hand was a Thursday. An hour before that we ate dinner, I watched your dad laugh As his chair teetered Back and forth, Back and forth. It looked like a metaphor I didn’t yet understand.
The first time I dared to hope you were re-staining your deck, I brought you coffee. A caramelizer freeze. You liked it just enough to keep.
It wasn’t the first time you liked something “just enough”.
The first time you cried in front of me was in your basement. It was the beginning of something that refused to end. The end of something that I never should have let begin. Lavender smells more like memories now
The first time you yelled at me I dared to stop hoping. It was a Thursday. You held my hand again You told me you didn't know how to miss me.
A lot of things were said for the first time that day. I learned I didn’t fit into your boxes. You wanted me to, You didn’t want me to. Back and forth Back and forth But this time no one was laughing.
No one was eating blueberries. No one was re-staining the deck. No one had anything to hide. No one wanted “just enough” anymore.
The first time I realized firsts Would sometimes be lasts, You needed me. It was the first time I didn't need you.

Unclaimed
Uncomfortable familiarity like the flowers I can't pick. You're the unowned land That I have already conquered. Something keeps me away, A prize, That didn't want to be won. -M.M
Brave is Beautiful
This year I will be strong. I will be courageous. I will stand for what’s right. I will fight the good fight. I will be brave. I am beautiful.Â
There is nothing better than God’s beauty, hiking backpacks and new places to inspire a lot of new words.
Things I will never know
Why I only have one dimple.
What the heck happened to the driver’s seat of my car so now I look like a child when I am driving.
Why he killed himself.
What that movie Tori and I watched one day last summer was called.
Where my stuffed lamb I loved at five years old went.
Why I have depression.
The reason we romanticize sadness.
The word on the tip of my tongue.
Out of the thousands of things I say, which do I say the most.
The reason I can’t put what I want  into words and why that makes me feel so incomplete.
Why I am writing this.

Maybe I don’t need to know
I wrote this several months ago the morning of his funeral. I miss him.
Today I woke up, ate breakfast, and got dressed for my friend’s funeral.
He was 15.
In these past days I have experienced denial, fear, deep sadness, but also witnessed the intense love of the people around us. Most importantly I again was struck with the trauma of God's sovereignty. Despite the pain we all feel through this, He is good.
He will always be Good. He will always be Just. He will always and forever be my God.
This is not to downplay the tragedy of the events that took place. It is not to make myself feel better or justify feeling better. No, it is to take the time to recognize the emptiness a person can leave and the beautiful way God fills it.
I may not understand why someone so loved would take their own life. I could let that question beat at my soul and rage havoc on my conscience, but what will that change?
Tragedy is real. Suicide is real. Fear is real. But so is my God and He is also bigger than all things.
His plan is His plan and who am I to ask His intentions. Some things are not for our ears to know or our minds to ponder. Rest In Peace Creed.

We learned about solutions in chemistry last week. We learned technically vodka is a solution. But air is as well. I learned there is always more than one approach to a problem. Â Â Â -M.M
He is Good
In these past 6 months, I learned a lot.
But I think most importantly I learned the true weakness of myself. A side of me was revealed that was angry, hurt, and bitter. I was broken down by temptation, disrespect, and emotion, that I didn't know how to handle. In the end I didn't come to a hopeless conclusion seeing that I was incapable and lacking strength. No, instead I was able to recognize the power of God. By myself, I can do nothing, but through Him I can do all things He has planned for me.
I will never be able to achieve something He doesn't want me to and will never be able to fail at something He has planned for me to succeed at. I can rejoice in my weakness because it shows His strength. My purpose in life is not to overcome my own struggles because I have God, but instead to glorify God in how I handle my struggles (therefore my life, which consequently is made up of hardships due to sin in our lives). I will enjoy Him and glorify Him in the bad and in the good because He is Holy Holy Holy and deserving of all praise. God is almighty, He demands our respect, gives us life and has offered His. My God is greater than all things.
Mistakes
But the thing is, I cannot let that taint my memory of what was. The ever present reminder Unending hum in the silence.
Metaphors make a mistaken interpreter I am sick and tired of things getting lost in translation.
Suggestions not asking for second chances but new beginnings, That goes ignored. Implied intentions are quick to judge. Forgiveness now means desperation.
Desperation for what? On my knees begging for one more let down? Maybe I am desperate.
Forgiveness feels fragile Thinner than the ice I walk on with you At least falling through will make me feel something
Why is there such tempting permanence in anger?
The destruction of a person is not art There is no talent in selfishness, no skill in disregard Mutilation of trust cannot fit on a canvas for a reason Something beautiful can come from pain but pain was never something beautiful
I can say sorry, sorry until my tongue bleeds from repetition I can listen to you say it until I convince myself it's true
Is it true? Am I even sorry for attempting to make you feel what I did Or am I more sorry that I failed at that too?
Please stop apologizing I know that you feel bad, I know You once called me empathetic So do you not understand I feel the self-pity your apologies are wrapped in?
I want to believe you I want to believe myself I am sorry I can’t
You're not someone I hate But you are the person I wish I could I don't even know if that’s true I can’t hate what I don’t even know
I have made mistakes You have made mistakes Together we have created damage I can barely look at A sickening display of good intention
This was never the intention Intention means nothing now I intended to write this as a peace offering Instead, I have painted another picture of my humanity

Writing
It’s always given me something to hold onto. I don’t need closure, I need fuel to ignite my mind. Set my already smoldering soul ablaze.Â
I can’t move on until I know what I am moving on from. So let me sit for a minute to describe the bloodstained disappointment I am to myself.
Feeling like a failure is part of the process. I have to first empty myself to fill the page.
I wrap myself in words until they all begin to sound the same. Forgiveness like settling, mistake like deserve, you like metaphor, you like regret, you like sorry, you like I don't believe it anymore. All of it melds together.Â
In the end, it’s all the same anyway. My arrangement of letters trying to resemble something I lost. It’s not a person, not a feeling, not even bad or good. Just missing.Â
Indecision
You decided to leave I don't blame you. I once had hoped you would have stayed. Damn, if you would have stayed.. I can almost taste it, On the tip of my tongue It’s sitting next to the elusive synonym for “You” Sometimes I doubt I’ll ever find it I am always misplacing things. Lost my keys in the couch cushions yesterday. Though you were never something that I lost No, you were something that didn’t want to be found. The quilt on my bed smells like a campfire. I wrap myself in it every night Trying, I think, to reignite the fire that once burned behind my eyes Instead I wake up in a cold sweat, smelling more and more like a my own memory. I still find your words in the most unexpected places, Along with sand from the beach No matter how much time passes they stay And I don’t want them to anymore. I saw the most beautiful sunset with you last winter My legs hung over your front porch railing inches above the ground The world looked intimidating from my point of view We sat close Breathing the same air My mind was trapped in that moment for weeks. The CD you made for me plays in my car everyday Song titles are written with blue ink on an index card in your distinct messy scrawl. I learned every word to B.O.B.’s don’t let me fall. Only hindsight recognizes irony. People used to ask what you were to me I never knew what to say Hell, how should’ve I known? So I called us best friends. Though we both knew that was some kind of forgotten lie. Like when you said I meant something to you. So many things point to that conclusion But it’s wrong all the more. Last spring I went on a hike where I dangled my feet over a 1,500 foot cliff The world wasn't so scary anymore. I had air in my lungs that you had never breathed before. I called from 700 miles away To tell you I knew what freedom felt like. While driving you turned to me and, almost whispering, said “You are so rare” I must have misheard you. I thought rare things were worth keeping, Thought they were things to be protected, cared for. I guess I just wasn't Your rare thing to worry about. You say you haven’t left anything unsaid. But maybe you never had anything to say. I don’t blame you for leaving. I blame myself for not being something worth staying for. -M.M
I could use some more of this. It's puts something back into my soul.
January
It hasn't been above freezing in a week. fingers are numb Lungs ache Windows covered in ice. Something about this is isolating. Words caught in my throat. Spontaneity on mute Maybe next time, maybe time, maybe next time. We hug, Not an inch of my bare skin touches yours. Summer was once pressed between us, Lake water conversation, Sun soaked optimism. Sweaty palms held onto me as I held onto the promises you made. Winter kills beautiful things. The lake is frozen, Hands are cracked and dry. Chapped lips whisper forgiveness through telephone lines. There is an art to letting things go, I have only begun to learn the colors. Bruise on my arm Scabs on my knuckles. Red and purple are a few. Art isn't always pretty. Early sunsets Dark mornings Black coffee Vacant complacency. My mind is a memory you've forgotten. Yours won't leave. But then again, Winter only kills beautiful things -M.M
To love Him is to praise Him with my life
Expanding the Kingdom
I have spent the last 2 weeks in a swimsuit and jean shorts, best friends at my side, and Jesus tugging at my heart. Looking around at all of the people who have offered me so much Joy and Love I began to realize how we have the capability to offer that to so many others. Praying now for the Lord to light the way in which he wants me to spread his word.Â
2.27.17
My mouth wouldn't close because the emptiness and loss were pushing their way to escape me first. Uncontrollable gasps of disbelief were pouring out of my lips. “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe” I hoped it had been a joke, I would show up to chem and there he would be laughing in his suit. He wasn't. He never will be.
We drove to school and I looked out the window, we were driving along the path he took every day. I hid my face in my dress to muffle the sobs. Attempting to clear my eyes enough to see him, because he had to be there. He had to be there. He wasn’t there.
I sat in a room hearing the soft but consistent sound of crying. I sat in a room and watched my best friends sob. I sat in a room and listened to people talk about the lowest point in their lives. I sat in a room and heard again and again and again “I wish I had known him better” “I knew him but I didn't know him”. I sat in a room and promised myself I would know all of them. I sat in a room and decided I will never let us sit in that room, hearing those sounds, feeling that feeling, sensing that absence, ever again.Â
Wednesday I had ice cream for breakfast and dinner. Calories don't feel like they count when you're grieving. Selfishly thinking the whole human biology stops and understands pain, but science is insensitive.
I cry in Ashlie’s living room while everyone else laughs about things my ears can’t seem to hear. Distraction is not how I cope. It is how I lose track of my humanity.
Thursday a sub read his name while taking roll. Every syllable hit me. I heard silence and then a chorus of voices saying he's absent. It fell from their lips as if it was a goodbye they never had a chance to give.
It feels wrong to laugh and smile. I sit in a room with one body missing, it is instead 6 feet below the ground that we so often forget is also a ceiling. The body of a boy I know. Of a boy I knew.
It would have been different if it was an accident. If a car had hit him as he rode home on his bike. There's no question that way. We can label it sad but bearable, we can continue. There is a rule book, a procedure. There is a graspable understanding, solid fact. There doesn't need to be a why. An accident pushes not stabs, it yells not screams,  it slows but it does not derail.  An accident does not require you question the victim. An accident can leave someone to forgive. Suicide doesn't. Suicide kills two people but only leaves one body. The life taken and the one who took it both buried in the same grave. Suicide leaves behind more pain than it could ever take away.
It is so vile that we were given the ability to take away our own lives. It is disgusting that we can hate ourselves so much. It is so dark. It must have been so dark. It was a cloudy day. I was sick but in school, everyone was there labeling him as absent assuming he was sick or not really thinking about it at all. They had no idea the three miles away he lay dead with a note beside him saying he loved his family and his cat. We just thought he was sick. I guess he was.
When we got there the sides of my lungs begin to restrict, my heart beats against my chest warning me, I shake and stumble up steps to a building holding his body and people worshipping something outwardly resembling my God. I saw pictures of a smiling boy, one who still had control of his body. Air still in his lungs. Oxygen in his veins. Hope left somewhere.
I catch a glimpse of his coffin. It takes so many people to carry. I still can't figure out how something so empty could weigh so much. Just a wooden box housing embalmed flesh, still veins, an empty mind void of hope.  I learned that hope is not what is heavy but it is the things hope must carry that weigh the most.
Afterward, I stood there, just stood there. Arms reached around my exhausted body from time to time and words of forced repetitive sorrow brushed past my ears occasionally. Then we followed the police guided burial procession led by my history desk partner.
There is something so confusing about mourning the victim with the one who took the victim's life. It is confusing how they can be the same person. He is dead. The only goodbye we will ever give is one he will never hear. Goodbye is at times, more for the person who is left behind.
Grief still tumbles out of our mouths at unexpected moments, hoping with all we have he will respond. He won’t. He has left a reminder of the emptiness someone can replace themselves with, but also of the wholeness that can be maintained through hope.
