Maddie: Hey babe, you busy?
lieutenant-walsh:
The pallid glow of her kitchen ghosted over his features. Matt wasn’t necessarily feeling up to socializing but if Maddie called; he came running. It came with the torrid, unrequited love that nestled up in his heart and cooled on the forefront of his mind. She was his little sister’s best friend. There was nothing appropriate about how he felt so he chose to ignore it and enjoy the bounties of their friendship. Even if it were a midday beckoning for pest control.
“You know I thought marriage marked off this requirement in your life. I thought the house was on the fire but no–you need to me catch a what?” Matt held to the feigned annoyance for a moment before a smile spilt on his lips.

Maddie was hunched on top of the marble countertop almost trembling in fear. It wasn’t even fifteen minutes ago that she’d been planted in front of the vanity doing her make up when she’d felt the beast zap across her toes. A shiver ran down her spine as she remembered the feel of the thing touching her body. Yuck, she thought now, shivering at the mere memory. However, she’d managed to scream, and jump onto the countertop in justified panic. Thankfully her phone had been nearby. With a barely solid hand she’d reached out and called Matt. He was a firefighter, she’d reasoned, he knew how to deal with these things. Of course the traitor of a voice in her head had cackled and chided, if that’s what you tell yourself to sleep better at night.
“Oh, stop it. I’m not married...at least not yet,” she responded, wagging a finger at the toilet. “He’s behind there. I swear to God Matty, he’s the size of an iguana. Hurry before he moves again.” Her cheeks were red and she could feel sweat gather under her armpits. And it wasn’t because Matt was there or because she was in a robe with nothing else underneath. Nope, it was because there was a ten foot long iguana behind her toilet.

The filtering smog that circled above him brought him an eerie amount of comfort. Something about being shrouded in the shadows of the bar beneath the fog settled the beast the growled inside of him. It had been exactly two weeks since he found out about it. Matt hadn’t done anything despite the urging from his oncologist. He didn’t think he had the strength to think about that above his crew and the ruins of his personal life. The honeyed sound of her voice broke over him like a wave sans the cooling effect of the frothy waves. All it brought was pain and the long lasting burn. “Are you stalking me?” Matt swirled the amber colored liquid around the glass before finally engaging her gaze. “Ain’t say you stand on some moral high ground when ya indulging in the same coping, huh?”
Goosebumps appeared on her forearms and scattered down the back of her neck at the low tumble of his deep voice. God, it was such pleasure and such a pain to be around him. He made her forget herself, caused her to become someone she vowed she’d never be again. Tilting her head, her chin jutting out slightly she eyed him over the rim of her glass. “Contrary to what you might think, I had a long day and I needed a de-stressor. I had no idea you became the owner.” Between the exhausting fight with her family over her father’s assets and her job, Maddie was consumed with stress. And this was the only release she found these days. Taking a sip of her drink she placed the glass back on the wood of the bar top, her eyes never leaving his face. Something was off. His eyes. There was something. But instead of acknowledging her suspicions by throwing questions at him, she glanced away and cleared her throat, forcing out a laugh to ease the tense air between them.
“There’s a difference between you and I,” she began pushing her dark locks away from her face. “And that is we don’t live by the same rules. I do what I want...and you...well you do what everyone else wants.” A sugary sweet smile appeared and disappeared just as quickly. It was a dig but every comment they made toward each other these days was. Exhaling a shredded breath to get her mind back under control, she polished off her drink before waving the bartender over for another. If someone had told her all those years ago that this would be where they’d end she would’ve choked out a laugh. No way, she would’ve said, we love each other. At the thought, a dark feeling encapsulated her chest and without much probing her father came back to her mind. Yep, she’d need something a lot stronger. “Get me whatever he’s having.” she told the bartender pointing at Matt’s drink once he arrived. “So....what’s got you in a pissy mood?”

Kat: I take that to offense, I'm not weird. He's weird
Kat: What are your father's wishes?
Maddie: Yeah, I'm going to let you run with that. He's definitely weird but the both of you together...that's weird.
Maddie: To my surprise he wants me to take over as VP. Not a job I wanted and he's all up in male ego about it. Thinks he's better for the job.

Maddie: Jamie is being a dick. Help me bury the body.
Kat: I can always sleep with him. Usually when that happens they skip town.
Maddie: I mean if you must since you and my brother are...weird. but he's trying to fight my dad's wishes. I just don't know what to do.

Her voice was like silk as she leaned from behind him, her body mere centimeters from his and whispered, “When did you become such a lush?” She could smell the tiring day on his skin, smell the cologne mingled with heat and it made her insides melt. Shivering, she took a step back for her own sanity before sliding onto the empty stool beside his. Of course, she’d find him here. This was their spot after all. And just like that, the ring on her finger grew heavy as it always did when she was around Matthew Walsh. “It’s very unbecoming of you.” Swallowing, she lifted a perfectly manicured finger to get the bartenders attention. “Vodka...on the rocks.” she stated to the bartender once he’d arrived. It was her drink, the drink she always got. And after the day she’d had, she needed something....or someone to calm her nerves.

You don’t need to be sorry for anything ever.

Maddie: Girl I have a mess bucket story. Are you busy?
“I don’t like when you dodge me, Matthew.” Maddie states stopping in the doorway of his office. He’s seated at his desk, deep in work and thought probably surprised at her presence. Giving her best smile she wonders in without further commentary or greeting, her gaze running over his awards and accomplishments. Firefighters bustle beneath her Milona Blahniks and chatter echo all around the firehouse in a family orientated way. That was the thing about firefighters, they were tighter than any family could be. Years ago when they’d been dating she used to surprise him with lunch dates and kisses at the station, now it was a completely different story and that fact made her heart ache.
Over the past few weeks, she’s wanted to reach out and thank him but between work, the funeral (a chill racks down her spine at the remembrance) and her bickering family she hasn’t exactly gotten a chance to contact him until recently; recently being three days ago. Matt on the other hand, God bless is soul, hasn’t exactly returned her call or messages. Maddie thought it was best if he saw her face instead. You know...to kill the tension. Placing her white Birkin on one of his guest seats she turns a smile in his direction. “Especially when we live and work twenty minutes away from each other.”
