I've been avoiding tumblr because I didn't get a chance to start the book until yesterday and I don't want anything spoiled BUT did anyone else start crying the moment geese and white liquor were mentioned 😭
Peeta, in the arena: *saves Katniss's life before she saves his*
THG fandom: "Katniss didn't need Peeta's help in the arena, she was always saving his ass and would've won without him!"
This isn't really an important parallel but it randomly came to me last night so I had to post it

I feel like many people have a fundamental misconception of what unreliable narrator means. It's simply a narrative vehicle not a character flaw, a sign that the character is a bad person. There are also many different types of unreliable narrators in fiction. Being an unreliable narrator doesn't necessarily mean that the character is 'wrong', it definitely doesn't mean that they're wrong about everything even if some aspects in their story are inaccurate, and only some unreliable narrators actively and consciously lie. Stories that have unreliable narrators also tend to deal with perception and memory and they often don't even have one objective truth, just different versions. It reflects real life where we know human memory is highly unreliable and vague and people can interpret same events very differently
Some types of unreliable narrator:
The Watson: is present for the event but does not have the same level of perception as protagonist
The Lemony Snicket: isn't present for the event, reconstructs the facts based on later research, can get things wrong or incomplete
The Ted Moseby: is present for the event but has romanticised and embellished their memory of it through nostalgia to an extent that you cannot fully believe it; is also prone to misremembering or outright forgetting details.
The Katniss Everdeen: is present for the event, is the protagonist, but is completely foreign to the world and out of their depth so they don't quite understand a lot of what is going on.
The Rose Quartz: is present for the event, but due to their personal agenda or feelings of shame hides and embellishes what actually happened in favour of a version that paints them in a better light.
The Big Brother: overwrites what actually happened in favour of propaganda.
The Jonathan Harker: is absolutely clueless about what is going on around them and the genre they're in so their perception of events is tinted by their own naivety.
The Goob: the narrator's own emotional bias clouds their judgement of what really happened.
The Tyler Durden: the narrator is suffering from hallucinations and doesn't realise it.
The Pi: the narrator has survived a traumatic experience and copes with it by turning it into a wonderful tale.
Everyone is the unreliable narrator of their own lives.
EVERYONE! IS THE! UNRELIABLE! NARRATOR! OF THEIR OWN LIVES!!
Katniss and Peeta's relationship embodies the Love Conquers All theme. Regardless of their individual assets, neither of them would've won the Games alone. They won because they were a team, because they kept saving each other, because they cared about each other too much to let one another other die. This was what gave the revolution life: two tributes leaving an arena alive, an impossibility made possible by love. And it would only survive as long as they did because their lives and their love were eternally tied to the hope that the Games could be defeated for good. The star-crossed lovers had to find a way to be together against all odds in order for the rebellion to succeed. That's the whole point.
Most "down bad" Katniss moment that's rarely mentioned:
Not only refusing to use a different ladder than Peeta but literally standing on the same rung as him because any amount of space between them is Too. Much.
+ Bonus moments because she's actually feral until she lays eyes on him again
No but is there stronger evidence that the story doesn't exist without Peeta? Katniss would've gone mad if he had died, if she had won alone.
what I love about The Hunger Games is how the Capitol's fashion style represents our own. The elite, the old money people, dress relatively tame compared to those who pretend they live this lifestyle. Just look at Snow compared to Effie. There's a necessity to show off for one part of the population up to the point they go in debt to pretend.
The middle and poor class wants to emulate the rich, but they do so in the most aggressive, out there style available to them, because they need to evidence their wealth. Old money doesn't.

Hot take maybe but Katniss aiming her bow at Peeta when he grabbed his knife after the rule change was revoked was a natural human response that most people would have in those circumstances, and it was Peeta's actions (immediately throwing his knife into the lake and telling her to kill him) that weren't normal
For some reason I find this to be such an interesting observation for Katniss to make in the middle of this passage. Her family and Gale were the only people who loved her unconditionally before the Games and that was fine with her. Now it's a significant loss.
Man I feel sick. Had way too much faith in people.
the fact that so many people continue to back trump every year makes me nauseous. it doesn’t matter if he loses because too many fucking people have clearly become comfortable with and supportive of right wing extremism thanks to him. what do you mean you support fascism. what do you mean.
i mean this in the meanest way possible, if you as a leftist, in an attempt to 'punish' the democrats, either didn't vote or voted for a third party, go fuck yourself. you chose your own self righteousness over actually doing good.
