it's hard to come to terms with the fact that you can't do things that you used to be able to do. I'll be honest, it feels like you're losing control of your life. it can feel very isolating and hopeless. its scary and overwhelming, and it's so hard to deal with.

you are not less than just because you can do less. im proud of you for still being here, and i wish you ease with adjusting to new ways of life. please take care of yourself, i love you.

The Woman I Love (Madera Lavellan/Cremisius Aclassi)

A surprise fic for @ottabox! I was going through some of my older writing and found the other Mads x Krem fics and got a desire to write more for my favorite rarepair! <3 I hope this is good!

Cremisius Aclassi’s greatsword whistled as it cut through the air, finding the enemy without trouble. The Saarebas dropped in an instant, his head now separated from the rest of his body. Blood stained the ground, but the mercenary didn’t seem to notice. His focus was on the fight, on his next opponent, on keeping the enemy from getting the upper hand.

From his peripheral vision, Madera Lavellan, the former Herald of Andraste, disappear from sight, cloaking herself as she approached one of the Qunari fighters. Her sudden appearance startled the warrior and she plunged her daggers in his chest before he could act.

The Iron Bull’s hollers echoed in the space surrounding them, his weapon coming down on the heads of those who got in his way. When the last Qunari fell, the Bull’s Chargers gathered together. They had been beating back the last of the attempted Qunari invasion ever since the Inquisition was disbanded. This had been the final group in Ferelden and Krem hoped that the Chargers could at least rest for the time being. He had sores on his feet that weren’t going away anytime soon.

“That was fucking awesome!” Iron Bull clapped a hand on his back, nearly knocking him off of his feet. “What do you say, Krem? A drink to celebrate?”

Krem smiled at his boss, knowing that Bull would keep them up well into the night ‘celebrating’ and decided to pass. “Maybe later, Chief. I’ve got some things I have to do.”

Bull’s gaze found Madera. The tiny elven woman was cleaning the blood from her daggers as she supervised the throat cutters. He nodded and grunted his understanding. Patting Krem on the shoulder, the former Qunari spy left him to do whatever it was he needed to. Krem and Mads hadn’t spoken about her reunion with Solas. Her former lover had broken her heart and Krem had spent the last two years mending it. She had told him that she loved him. But with Solas, things could have changed.

Madera glanced up as he approached, her emerald eyes wide with surprise. “Krem? I thought you’d be celebrating with Bull and Rocky by now.”

With a smirk, he shrugged and pulled his helmet off. His hair was damp from sweat and without the helmet to keep it in place, the strands were now falling into his face. Madera reached out with her hand and brushed the hair out of his eyes.

Confession:  When I saw Calpernia for the first time I was shocked. It was like seeing a unicorn, someone with imperfect teeth just like me! Living in a society that seems to believe having less than perfect teeth is the most hideous thing imaginable, I was so happy to see a character in a game that intentionally was designed with imperfect teeth. I hope it was not meant to “ugly” her up but I still think she’s beautiful, regardless. It pains me every time I see someone complain about her teeth.

And I’m thinking about the lack of a platonic redeem option for romanced Lavellan again.

It still bugs me immeasurably that there isn’t one, that ‘break up’ is synonymous with ‘kill’ and ‘continue the romance’ is synonymous with ‘redeem’. I don’t consider it unreasonable that a romanced Lavellan might decide that what Solas needs is support, and friendship, and (hah) compassion, but still not be willing to continue the romance. It is possible to pull out of that level of intimacy and still care enough to not want to kill him. It’s possible to understand and still not want that level of intimacy again.

Solas commits several violations of Lavellan’s trust at increasing levels of severity. Any emotionally healthy response to that would necessitate a degree of pulling back (assuming Lavellan doesn’t just go the kill response. I mean, they’re entitled to that level of anger, too); it’s not remotely healthy for either of them to carry on as they were.

And the platonic redeem option exists… for everyone except romanced Lavellan! So there will be dialogue recorded for it, however it plays out.

Only… for some reason, romanced Lavellan is left with their only options being “I can CHANGE HIM with the POWER OF LOVE!” or “I’ll murder him!” There’s no option to say “I think I understand, and I am willing to help you through this as a friend if you’ll let me, but I am not comfortable being romantically involved with you right now or possibly ever again.”

There’s no middle ground, and either extreme is equally unhealthy for poor Lavellan.

It’s a crying shame.

This is one of the reasons I’ve never felt that comfortable romancing Solas. The way I view him, and the aspects of him and his character arc felt a bit skewed to me when I romanced him. Like, it feels more like a distraction to me (if I’m explaining this correctly). The most potent example was the one you just gave. I’ve played through Trespasser with both a romanced Lavellan, as well as a High-Approval (Friendship) path. The friendship path resonated so much more with me. I really felt like we were equals having a conversation and the conviction that the inquisitor has when saying “I’ll prove to you that this world is worth saving” really got to me The fact that the inquisitor is willing to go the distance, is willing to see the good in Solas after all of that, and is going to try to save him was just perfect to me. The whole “Our love will survive this” just felt so out of place, especially after everything that happened. I just kept thinking “Really? This is what you’re concerned about when your ex proclaims that he’s going to destroy the world?” Not to knock the romancers or the Solavellans out there, but it’s just the feeling I’ve always gotten from his romance.

Unfortunately, the only way for a romanced Lavellan to get the “high approval friend and redeem” line is to click the broken heart icon after Solas reveals his identity to you.

Which triggers the line “What we had is over. Speak no more of it” (or something like that)

And then the entire thing progresses as a high-friendship Inquisitor

Which bothers me because:

1. Solas broke up with you. It’s weird that now you have to do it two years later.

2. This means you miss the opportunity to call him out on lying to you and violating your trust.

3. It conflates acknowledging the romance with staying in the romance.

4. As of today, there’s no Keep option that seems to acknowledge the Trespasser breakup choice

4a. Which may mean, for DA4, redeem and romance might get conflated, which is not ok with me or my Lavellan

5. Seriously, why is “continue the romance” the default???????

After Trespasser I feel really conflicted about being so into Solavellan. I mean, I can still ship it and be critical but the more critical I am the less I’m into the canon ship. I’m just so not here for the whole “woman saves man from himself with the power of love” thing. It’s a huge red flag and I hate that we have no middle ground. When you really think about it it’s… not romantic at all. Obviously. And I hate that it becomes Lavellan’s responsibility to stop him when he could just stop it himself if he truly cared about her, and the people of Thedas. Obviously he doesn’t care about the latter, though, and I’m questioning just how much he really cares about Lavellan if he’s still willing to let her die along with everyone else. I jumped for the romanced redeeming because I was really desperate for that tiny chance that they could be happy together, without her needing to kill him for wanting to destroy the world. I just want the fluff every other romance has, you know? But it’s becoming clear to me that’s not going to happen. And anyway, it just goes against what my Lavellan is. She wouldn’t pine for him for two years in the first place, that just doesn’t seem healthy at all and I don’t see a strong, independent woman who lead the freaking Inquisition giving up herself and everything she has fought for for love. Especially after two years! That choice Lavellan makes if she redeems him out of love is just so damn contradictory and desperate (at least for me) and yet I don’t see her going as far as to kill him. I’m really disappointed there isn’t a platonic redeem option and I feel bad about continuing the romance because it’s just not healthy at all. Like, I’m really regretting getting so into this ship now.

And this is why Trespasser finally ruined Solavellen for me (as presented in canon at least. Headcanon saves the day when it comes to my Lavellan and Solas)

It is not Lavellan’s responsibility to save him.

It is not Lavellan’s “role” to heal him.

She is not his Morality Pet or a Love Martyr.

“Woman heals Broken Man” is a trope that needs to be exterminated.
