When it comes to finding inspiration for whatever reason you can find it from anything. With styling the difference is only in how you use and interpret the inspiration into fashion. You can find your ideas from architecture, music, movies, colors, nature, people, animals, shapes, smells, photographers, painters, writers, etc. As a fashion stylist you are in charge of creating the shoot. You need to have the inspiration match the look and feel of the shoot. A lot of times it is easy to base your style off of a movie because it already has a style to it and you can use a similar feel. Another technique I learned in school was to pick something like a designer, a painter, or an actress, and create a mind map off of it. For example one of my projects I chose the brand Levi’s. I started with that as my center and branched off of it which led to the famous photograph of workers eating lunch on top of a skyscraper in the 30′s. I created a whole photoshoot with denim styled in the 1930′s and 40′s. Another project I created with the help of a classmate was based off of an artist. I wanted to steer away from bold and bright so I took to pastel and soft and found artist Edgar Degas. I really liked the ballerina feel and created a shoot with tulle and light colors. For that inspiration I chose technology and search on Pinterest for artists. Although searching online can be the easiest sometimes just taking a walk down the road will give you inspiration. The best part about being a fashion stylist is getting ideas and putting them together to make a theme. AKA the mood board. Inspiration can be found anywhere and is amazing to see what a fashion stylist can create with it.
