Did you know that…

… this look created for “Vogue” by Jean Paul Gaultier was inspired by a (sudden and out of nowhere) Madonna appearance in a Batman comic book? Yeah, exactly! On December 21, 2011 the comic Batman Incorporated: Leviathan Strikes arrived on newsstands with an interesting story. Madonna (here named Leviathan, and a villain) is a secret spy that owns a female spy agency, leading ladies such as Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and others in the art of spying.

The curious thing about the comic is that the artist Grant Morrison decided to portray the girls with an iconic look. Lady Gaga has her “Poker Face” hood, Katy Perry wears similar clothes to the One of the Boys era, Rihanna has her side bangs from Good Girl Gone Bad, and Madonna… Well, I think they decided to create something new to her, something she had actually never worn. The comic obviously garnered Madonna’s attention, because she payed homage to that look by asking Jean Paul Gaultier to improve it. And he did! Including pants and a new bustier, not only making this “Vogue” look a retrospective to the Blond Ambition Tour, but also making it iconic to those who read the comic from now on. Isn’t this amazing?

Would you ever think of something like that happening?

Did you know that... ... the artwork for Madonna's second single was done by artist and friend Martin Burgoyne? Exactly! The photo shoot took place at a Times Square photo booth, where both Madonna and Martin took photos of themselves because they didn't have the money for a real photo shoot. Martin then reproduced and compiled Madonna's pictures on a notebook and painted with regular colored pencils the photos. The art was then shown to Madonna, who loved it so much she wanted to put it on the cover of her next single, "Burning Up". Madonna's friendship with Martin came years before that, though, in the New York City night life, when he was a Studio 54 bartender and she was a Max's Kansas City performer. They shared an apartment together, went to parties and took several pictures, some of them were recently auctioned by his family members. Martin died in October 1986, only 23 years old, when he contracted AIDS. Madonna held the memorial in NYC and paid all of the funeral expenses. He became subject of one of her songs, "In This Life", and he is one of the reasons she fights AIDS so determinedly.

Did you know that...

... the artwork for the MDNA Tour poster was inspired by a David Bowie album cover? Exactly! Being a huge Bowie fan, Madonna referenced him on his most artistically creative phase, regarded so by most of his fans. The period on which Bowie became an addict to a few substances was also the peak of his inventiveness, and that’s the period this greatest hits album records.

Where does Madonna fit into all this? The concept for the MDNA album was a trip down addicted lane, with Madonna citing “molly” and “MDMA” during the period. A girl gone wild. And that’s exactly what Bowie was going through at the time, being vulnerable, but also creative. Around that era, Bowie released most of his classic works: Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, the Diamond Dogs Tour, Station to Station, Young Americans, Low, “Heroes” and Lodger.

Did you know that...

... Madonna’s promo picture for the Truth or Dare fragrance was inspired by a Man Ray photograph? Yeah! The work is Le Baiser, taken in 1930, and the model is Kiki de Montparnasse. The Mert & Marcus 2012 picture with Madonna mimicks its style and idea.

Did you know that...

... The video collection 93:99 was supposed to have included more videos? Exactly! While compiling her videos from the 90s for a release, Madonna explicitly decided to leave out works such as "This Used to Be My Playground", "Erotica" and "Deeper and Deeper" to avoid any kind of controversy.

Each one of the videos were controversial on their own: "Playground" because Madonna supposedly copied a Boy George video, "Erotica" because of its explicit imagery and "Deeper and Deeper" due to a representation of a dark ritual. Though Madonna was hesitant about leaving "Deeper and Deeper" out, she could not name the release 92:99 and still not include "Erotica", so she scraped the idea. Other videos from the 90s excluded from the compilation include "I'll Remember" and "You'll See".

The release was praised for being a representation of Madonna's artistry, and critics noted how she collaborated with some of the decade's rising artists, such as David Fincher, Stephane Sednaoui, Chris Cunningham, Jonas Akerlund and Johan Renck.

Did you know that...

Madonna's video for "This Used to Be My Playground" aroused controversy upon its released because she supposedly stole the idea from Boy George? Exactly, and it's sick. Back in 1987, Boy George released a video for his single "To Be Reborn", which displayed the singer on a photobook, going through memories.

Five years later, in 1992, Madonna released her video, and tabloids everywhere claimed that she had stolen the concept from Boy George. While Madonna never said anything about this matter, Boy George has dedicated a whole chapter on his autobiography, called "This Used to Be My Video".

Years went on and he continued with his feud with Madonna until recently, when he finally apologized. Maybe his anger was because his single was less successful than Madonna's, with Boy George peaking at #13 on the UK and M at #3, while on the US she reached the top spot and Boy George didn't even chart. But that's life, isn't it?

Did you know that...

... the 1985 classic Desperately Seeking Susan is out on Blu-ray right now? Yeah, exciting, isn't it? It was released last week and you can check the Blu-ray.com review here, along with more info. The film had previously been issued on VHS, LaserDisc and DVD formats.

Now, Madonna has eight Blu-ray releases, with the others being 007 Die Another Day (2008), Sticky & Sweet Tour (2010), Evita (2012), Truth or Dare (2012), W.E. (2012), A League of Their Own (2012) and MDNA World Tour (2013).

There was a rumor a couple of years ago that The Girlie Show shot in Australia would also be released on Blu-ray format, and even a date was set. However, there was no release when the day arrived. Now, on Blu-ray.com there's a page dedicated to it, but completely blank.

Did you know that...

... the classic "Vogue" performance has been made two times? Exactly! We all know that Madonna made a memorable performance of "Vogue" during the Video Music Awards on September 6, 1990, but I bet most of you didn't know that she performed it again a day later.

On September 7, 1990, Madonna was honored with the Commitment to Life Award at the Commitment to Life IV AIDS Benefit, along with artist David Hockney, actor Sir Ian McKellen and congressman Henry Waxman. She opened the show performing "Vogue" exactly like she did on the VMAs a day before.

... Madonna sang almost all the songs from the Music album? Surprising, isn't it? The exception is "Amazing", and I've already made a post about that one. She even sang the bonus tracks "Lo Que Siente La Mujer" and "Cyber-Raga"! Check it out:

"Music": first sung on the 2000 Europe Music Awards, then it's been sung ever since, on TV shows and every one of her tours, including the Super Bowl.

"Impressive Instant": the opening number of the Don't Tell Me Promo Tour and the second song on the Drowned World Tour.

"Runaway Lover": performed only once, during the Don't Tell Me Promo Tour.

"I Deserve It": performed during the Drowned World Tour.

"Amazing": the only song on the album that was never performed.

"Nobody's Perfect": performed during the Drowned World Tour.

"Don't Tell Me": performed first during the Don't Tell Me Promo Tour, and then on the Drowned World Tour and the Re-invention Tour. Also got the famed duet with Miley Cyrus.

"What It Feels Like for a Girl": performed in English during the Don't Tell Me Promo Tour.

"Paradise (Not for Me)": seen first on video screens at the Drowned World Tour and then performed live at the Confessions Tour as a duet with Yitzhak Sinwani.

"Gone": performed during the Drowned World Tour. Sometimes it was replaced by "You'll See".

"Lo Que Siente La Mujer": performed during the Drowned World Tour entirely in Spanish.

"Cyber-Raga": sung live for the first time at the MDNA Tour, twelve years after being written.
