Madras memories

You can't pin Madras down to any one thing (believe us, we tried). So we decided to kick off Project Madrasification - an ongoing celebration of this grand, old city. We want to create a repository of memories, so that tomorrow when everything changes, we have a place to visit and reminisce about the spirit and soul of this wonderful city many of us call HOME.

Then came the Jain Marwaris. The city is also home to Kutchi Memons, Bohras and those who speak Saurashtra, a peculiar dialect that has Gujarati, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu words. Madras was soon becoming a melting pot of cultures and even today has room for all cultures and delicious food, of course!!

The Marina Beach is better than than the Miami Beach. I have great memories of running on the beach.

The British managed to regain control in 1749, through the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. The British strengthened and expanded Fort St. George over the next thirty years. Through this time, they faced a lot of attacks - in 1759 by the French under Thomas Arthur and Comte de Lally, and later in 1767 by Hyder Ali, the Sultan of Mysore, during the First Anglo-Mysore War.

The Treaty of Madras brought the war to an end, and with that, the threats came down significantly. The 1783 version of Fort St. George is what still stands today.

There used to be a temple in the buffer zone that was destroyed by fire. The colonial government took over the land and constructed the lighthouse - which stands in the Madras High Court complex even today. During World War I, this light house in Madras was shelled by the German light cruiser, SMS Emden. The skirmish resulted in five civilian deaths and left twenty-six wounded. Later, that night, the crew of a merchant ship destroyed by the German ship that night.

Happy Madrasification Week - you are still smoking' HOT

What a day (or should we say week) to kick something like this off!!

Since that eventful day Madras has held me close to her heart and supported me as I grew from a boy to a man. She gave me a fantastic education in life and for a young boy with dreams in his eyes, Madras soon became HOME.

This is a small part of my relationship with Madras and all of us associated with this site would like to hear your stories and memories.
