when you’re ready || shawn mendes
summary: after being bestfriends forever and knowing you both had feelings for each other, you decided your ready to have a relationship with Shawn.
Your eyes snapped open at the buzzing of your phone on your wood nightstand. You reached over not bothering to move your body and let your eyes close again as you answered the call.
“Hello?” you answered your voice raspy.
“Goodmorningggg! Happy birthdayyyy!” your best friend Shawn sang into the phone. You lifted it from your ear to glance at the time and you rolled your eyes to the back of your head.
“There better be a good fucking reason you’re calling me at 7:30 in the morning Shawn Peter or I’m going to kill you,” you threatened, pulling the blanket into your chest and digging your head into the pillow.
“Because it’s your birthday duh,” he said,“ and I’m on my way to your house so get up and get dressed we have plans.”
“At 7:30? In the morning?”
“Yes, I’ll be there in like 3 minutes so get out of bed,” he told you hanging up before you couldn’t get any other form of protest in.
“Totally not happening,” you mumbled to yourself, turning your body over and trying to find the warmth your body held when you were sleeping. You instantly regret opening your window last night as you felt the cool Toronto breeze creep into your room. A few minutes later you heard your front door open but you knew it was Shawn so you didn’t bother moving.
“Y/n?” he yelled getting closer to your bedroom. He opened your door and even with your eyes closed you could feel his glare that was on you.
“Wake upppp,” he complained stepping closer.
“I’m not asleepppp,” you mimicked with a sleepy smile keeping your eyes closed.
“Get up and get dressed, we have places to go and people to see,” he told you.
“Bubbbb,” you whined fluttering your eyes open.
“Come cuddle. Just five minutes,” you pleaded, pulling your best puppy dog face.
“Only because it’s your birthday,” he sighed pulling off his shoes knowing you would have a fit if he put his overworn boots on your bed. You gasped dramatically, trying to hold back a smile.
“So you mean this is the only time you’ll ever cuddle me again until next year? Worst birthday ever,” you said sarcasm dripping off of your voice as Shawn laid next to you getting under the blanket.
“Oh shut it,” he smiled pulling you by your waist closer to him. You laid your head on his chest and he slid his hand up the back of your shirt and laid it on your bare skin causing the corners of your mouth to lift into a smile. It was something that he did fairly often to make you feel closer to him and it worked every time. You let your eyes close, feeling completely at peace, listening to Shawn’s heartbeat. You traced your fingers over his chest mostly to let him know that you were still awake and you planted a soft kiss onto his chest.
These moments of affection were normal for you and Shawn. You had been friends since you both could remember, but always just friends. No matter how many times Shawn’s dad asked when he was going to make his move because he knows you’re the one or how many times your mom told you she knew that she saw love in your eyes when you looked at him. You loved each other, but you were too scared to admit it. Too scared to lose one another. So, for now, you were both perfectly content with the cuddling, the best friend lunches, and the drunken kisses that you two shared.
You both had tried to be with other people, but all of them were just failed attempts for both of you. Eventually, enough was enough and you had sat down and talked about it, told each other how you felt, but how both of you were scared. You decided to remain friends, you weren’t ready. You weren’t ready to change what you had with Shawn as much as you wanted it the fear was overwhelming. But you were his and he knew that. His heart belonged to you, you knew that.
“Don’t fall asleep,” Shawn whispered bringing his other hand to your hair.
“But you make it so easy,” you answered softly.
“I brought you breakfast, and coffee and your first present of the day but you can’t have it until you get up and get dressed.”
“I told you not to get me anything,” you rolled your eyes.
“Yeah after I already got you things, and I was definitely going to do it anyway,” he told you a smile on his face. You let out a groan and pushed yourself up so you were laying next to Shawn, face to face.
“Where are we going?” you asked. He turned on to his side and brought his hand up to your face running his hand along your cheek.
“Secret,” he whispered with a small smile. His face was very close to yours. You wanted to close the gap and kiss his lips, but you couldn’t. You rolled your eyes and stretched your body making him laugh. You lifted the blanket up and looked up and down his body to look at his outfit but he was just wearing his black jeans and a plain t-shirt.
“See something you like?” he smirked.
“Don’t flatter yourself, Mendes. I was just seeing what you were wearing but you wear the same thing every day,” you retorted trying to hide your smile.
“Mhmm,” he hummed with a smile. You got up and walked to your closet looking through it and grabbing clothes. You went to your bathroom and slid on a pair of black jeans and a cute sweater knowing you would complain about being cold. You brushed your teeth and your hair before walking back out and pulling on shoes. You walked back over to your closet and sighed.
“What’s wrong, angel?” Shawn asked looking up from his phone.
“Nothing, I just wish you had that cute ass jean jacket with you,” you said frowning and sifting through your clothes to find another jacket to throw over it.
“If only your incredibly genius best friend knew you were going to say that and brought it with him and its sitting in your kitchen,” he smiled. You looked at him and smiled.
“You’re the best, know that right?”
“Yeah I know,” he smiled standing up and walked into your kitchen. You followed him and you saw food, coffee, the jacket and a small box laying on the counter. He set the food on a plate and warmed it up and you propped yourself up on the counter. He grabbed the box and walked towards you.
“I wasn’t sure if you would like it, but I showed your mom and she said you would so I’m trusting her,” he smiled handing it to you. You looked up at him with a glare.
“Yeah,” he nodded and laughed,“ open it.” You rolled your eyes and opened the box seeing the prettiest necklace you had ever seen. You looked up at Shawn with a smile on your face.
“Shawn it’s beautiful, thank you,” you said opening your arms for him to come hug you. He walked closer and you wrapped your arms around him, placing your face in his neck and you widened your legs so he could come closer. His hands snaked around your body and you brought your lips to his neck sweetly a few times.
“Thank you so much bubba,” you smiled,“ can you put it on me?” He nodded and smiled so you jumped off the counter and turned around holding your hair out of the way as his fingers ran across your neck and he clasped the necklace.
“How’s it look?” you asked turning around.
“Beautiful,” he answered with a smile. You felt your face heat up but you rolled your eyes and grabbed the food out of the microwave. After eating, Shawn pulled you out the door and into the car.
“This is kidnapping ya know,” you told him turning the radio down.
“You got into the car voluntarily,” he laughed.
“Just tell me where we’re going,” you huffed.
“Pickering, now I like this song so shush,” he said smiling and turning up the radio. You couldn’t help but smile as he moved his fingers along the steering wheel.
You arrived in your hometown in a short 20 minutes and he pulled into a parking spot in front of your house. You had fallen asleep about 5 minutes into the drive since Shawn had turned his seat warmers on. He couldn’t help but smile and shake his head when he looked over at you seeing you fast asleep. He placed his hand on your face and ran his finger down your cheek.
“Hey beautiful, wake up we’re here,” he said softly knowing it wouldn’t take a lot for you to wake up.
“No,” you whispered,“ where are we?”
“Open your eyes,” he laughed. You let your eyes flutter open slowly to adjust to the light and you smiled widely.
“Does this mean we can go upstairs and take a nap?” you asked making him laugh.
“Your mom will never let you do that and you just woke up. How do you sleep so much?”
“I love it,” you said with a little yawn.
“Come on you fool,” he said rolling his eyes and getting out of the car. You walked into your parent’s house and your mom and dad were waiting for you on the couch.
“Oh, my baby happy birthday!” your mom said rushing over to you and crushing you into a hug.
“Oh wow hello. Thank you,” you replied laughing lightly and hugging her back. She released you and hugged Shawn.
You hugged your dad and sat down on the couch patting the space next to you for Shawn.
“Shawn’s family is coming over for lunch so we’ll give you your presents then okay?”
“What time?” you looked down at your phone seeing that it was almost 10.
“About 11:30 or so,” she answered. You turned and smirked at Shawn.
“Do you know what this means we have time for?” you said wiggling your eyebrows making him roll his eyes.
“Should I be scared?” your dad chimed in.
“She wants a nap,” Shawn laughed making you nod.
“Of course she does,” your mom said with a small chuckle,“ go on I’ll come knocking in an hour.” You jumped up quickly with a wide smile.
“Coming bub?” You asked Shawn making your mom and dad both look at each other and smile.
“Of course,” he smiled. He grabbed your hand and you walked up the stairs and you immediately laid down on your old bed. Shawn laid next to you and pulled you close. You turned over to lay onto your stomach but left your head on Shawn’s chest so you could look up at him. You grabbed his hand and rested it on his chest, tracing the outline of his tattoo with your other hand.
“Are you ready for your next present?” he said softly.
“Shawn, you didn’t have to get me anything at all, let alone two things,” you sighed.
“That sucks,” he smiled reaching into your table.
“Why are you getting in there?”
“I figured we would end up here when I planned the day out so when I came up to ask your mom about the necklace I put it in there,” he shrugged. He was so cute and thoughtful.
“Did you plan out this whole day to a T?”
“Maybeee,” he smiled making your eyes roll out of habit, “Here.” He handed you an envelope and you sat up crossing your legs and opened it seeing a plane ticket to Amsterdam for a date you immediately recognized.
“Yeah it’s more for me than for you I promise,” he chuckled. He grabbed your hand and carefully intertwined your fingers.“ I really want you there, I need you there.” You smiled at him with a nod and you took a shaky breath, blinking rapidly trying to get rid of the tears you knew were coming. You always got so emotional when Shawn brought up touring but this one was so different, it was so much longer. You were so scared of losing him, losing him not only as your best friend but losing his heart that you had held for so long.
“Please don’t cry,” Shawn whispered bringing his hand up to your face. He knew you better than anyone, so he knew the signs.
“M'not gonna,” you lied with a sniffle,“ I’m 20, I don’t cry anymore.”
“Mhmm,” he hummed,“ come here.” He pulled you into his chest. He kissed the top of your head and you closed your eyes, a tear falling down your cheek. You were positive Shawn could feel your heart racing.
“You know you’re always gonna be m'girl right?” he whispered running his hand through your hair.
“I know, I know,” he said cutting you off,“ I just want you to know.” You nodded your head letting more tears escape your eyes, knowing that if you tried to talk it would just break the dam.
For the first time in a while, you found yourself not able to fall asleep. You closed your eyes and let time pass and soon enough your mom came knocking on the door.
“Honey, Shawn’s family is here,” she spoke through the door.
“Okay thank you, we’ll be down in a second,” Shawn spoke for you. You hesitantly sat up, losing contact with him.
“Hey, you okay?” he asked looking at you. You nodded with a light smile.
“Come on, we’ll talk about this tomorrow okay? It’s your day, now smile or I’ll tickle you,” he threatened. You smiled at him and he grabbed your hand and kissed it before you walked downstairs.
You guys spent hours eating and talking and eventually you opened presents and had cake. Your dad decided to start a fire in the backyard and they made Shawn bring out his guitar. After a while, Shawn said he had yet another surprise for you so he took your hand and took you back into the house.
“I wanted us to be alone for this,” he said. You could tell he was nervous and it was making you a bit anxious so you bit the inside of your cheek and nodded. He made you sit on the couch and he sat next to you.
“I wrote you a song,” he told you quietly looking anywhere else but you,“ but I won’t play it if you don’t want to hear it. I just need you to know how I feel.”
“I want to hear it,” you nodded with a small smile. He looked at you for a second before positioning his guitar on his lap and beginning to play. (When you’re ready). You watched as he sang and his hands as they played.
“Baby tell me when you’re ready, I’m waitin’. Baby anytime you’re ready, I’m waitin’. Even ten years from now, If you haven’t found somebody I promise I’ll be around. Tell me when you’re ready I’m waitin’, I’m waitin’” he finished. He placed his guitar to the side and sat there for a second before turning to you.
“You don’t have to say anything, I just want you to know that no matter what happens, I will wait for you because I know that you are the one for me Y/n. You’re the only one that I want to see when I wake up. The one I want to hold when I fall asleep. I’ve tried so hard to move on and I know you deserve someone better. Someone who will be here with you all the time and someone who doesn’t have to be across the world half the time. But fuck, I’m so in love with you and I just need you to know that it’s okay to not be ready and it’s okay if you don’t want this-” you leaned over and pressed your lips to his, placing your hand on his cheek. He brought his hands to your waist and pulled you closer.
“Hey um sorry to interrupt,” Aaliyah said walking into the room causing you guys to break apart,“ but um Mom and Dad wanted me to come check on you guys. I’m pretty sure they think you’re having sex or something.” Shawn’s cheek’s flushed red and you laughed.
“Okay, tell them we’ll be there in a minute,” you smiled.
“I will and it took you guys long enough,” she teased before walking out of the room. You turned towards Shawn.
