A friend asked me if I'm okay today. Serious expression on his face. And all I was able to give him is the "deer in the headlights expression" and then awkwardly ask what does he mean by that. He's told me I seem tired lately. And there I thought I was having a good day.
Carnage
It's late. I should be sleeping. Yet there's a creeping chill crawling down my back and I feel my whole mind turning black.
My faith is long dead and gone. I keep asking what I have or haven't done to deserve... this.
But the abyss just stares back in silence, making me crave all the violence, the yelling... My heart's swelling and there's nothing but the sizzling static.
And I might be a bit dramatic, but when all one hears is sharp alarms ringing, screaming in your ears... it makes you claw at your own skin. But your nails are dull and your skin's not thin.
You grab a knife, a blade, cold steel and you slice, you slit and all you feel for a moment there is the burning of the fresh-made cuts.
No heavy feelings in your guts, no stomach's churning, no world spinning... just warm blood trickling down your arms.
No more alarms when your heart beats like a drum and everything goes... numb.
You fade away, your face goes blank and then...
...there's a clank of the knife dropped on the floor. You blink in panic, back of your mind checking for the sound of the door opening as you're frantically wrecking the place up in an attempt to stop the bleeding.
And you manage.
But the urges don't go quiet. Always wanting, always needing, hungry, begging for more carnage.
And suddenly not even a knife is sharp enough no matter how rough you are.
So the next time you grab a razor, raising the bar, higher and higher, not caring you might take it too far.
And maybe, deep down, you even wish you will.
Unfortunately, not every child is born out of love. And sometimes, even if love plays a role in such creation, it's so crooked and twisted that all it brings is yet another lost soul, missing the crucial ability to distinguish between love and emotional manipulation.
I don't think my parents have never loved me. I think they had tried as best as they knew how to. Sadly, no one taught them how to love someone unconditionally. And unfortunately for me, it left me laying bruised and crying on the floor of my childhood room in a puddle of my own bodily fluids on more nights than I can count. It taught me to flinch at any sudden movements or loud noises, listen for footsteps behind a closed door and never to voice my needs, feelings and opinions.
It pushed me towards not wanting the life I was given, making me feel even more as the ungrateful brat I was taught I am. I was fourteen when I first grabbed a razor and sliced my skin open. I was fifteen when I first tried to convince myself to find the courage to do the unthinkable and leave everything behind me forever. I did not understand why do people endure living in a world so cruel as the one I was raised in. But fortunately, I guess, I was showed that my world has been more unjust than it should have been. That there's hope. A chance to build myself a new, better world.
And so I decided to try.
The journey was, and is, quite rough and messy. Full of missteps, setbacks and moments when I firmly believe that I am broken beyond repair. Since I was fifteen I have attempted at my life three times in total.
Even as I'm finally actually healing, during those past two years after I left that house, I struggle to feel any anger towards my past tormentors. Sometimes I even still blame myself for all that happened. That I was not a good enough child for them. Not enough to deserve love and affection. I blame myself for not being strong enough to handle what was expected of me. For putting scars on my skin and seeking solace in watching blood pour out of my veins yet again during those dark sad times in the first few months of my supposed newly found freedom. But it was probably to be expected as I knew no other "love" than one that made my chest feel so tight it left me battling for my own breath on the floor in my small rented room.
But I kept trying.
Now I am twenty-one and I feel that my life has yet to begin. I still sometimes find myself crying while I lay on the floor in a cozy flat I share with my loving partner. I still find myself questioning my own worth and whether I deserve the things that make me want to experience life to the fullest on the good days. I have a lot to work on and most of the time I feel like a newborn foal trying to walk for the first time. But on most days I am sure I can do it. That one day I'll be at peace with my past, myself and the fact that simply being is enough to deserve love.
So I keep trying.
One step at a time.
It's always the little things.
They know that I like books so they choose me to read out loud, not caring I get anxious from all the looks or that I hate what the book's about.
They know that I don't like planes, so They got me some chewing gum. Don't get me wrong, I like the thought, but it pains me that They don't care I don't like menthol. I wish They would know I would like a sweet one better.
They thought about what to give me. For my birthday or christmas. I always say I don't like gifts but that's not true. It just hurts more to get a gift that says "I don't know this person" then not to get nothing at all.
I would love to tell Them. About my hobbies. About my life. About me. But They're just not interested. They make me feel awkward. That I talk too much. They make me feel ashamed of things that bring me joy. Mocking me for still loving my stuffed animals, not understanding that they were there for me much more than They've ever even tried to be.
"Too childlish. Too immature. Too weird."
And then They wonder why do I never share anything with Them.
