I began to realize how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. If you are interested in something, no matter what it is, go at it full speed ahead. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good.
Roald Dahl (via purplebuddhaquotes)
West Virginia teachers just shut down the ENTIRE STATES SCHOOLS.
They went on strike.
They worked with churches, community centers, and food banks to make sure that students who rely on school to be a safe place or for a meal will still be able to get them.
They are one of the lowest funded states for education. Many teachers working retail and food service on the weekends.
They can’t properly make lesson plans when they can’t feed their own children.
They can’t teach all day to kids after working all night to pay bills.
They can’t watch their students education suffer because they are not being paid enough to live.
They are demanding better funding to schools.
They are demanding pay raises.
They are demanding better health benefits.
They are demanding the safety of their students.
Students in multiple counties led a support system for their teachers. Wearing purple to support them and hyping up social media.
More information. WV teachers are the 48th-lowest paid in the country and are looking at only 1-2% raises over the next few years. (Vox)
My mom was a teacher and still works in the public schools. My dad volunteers at the same school. I support teachers, and I support teachers doing what they have to do to get the salaries and benefits they need and deserve.

mlk and civil rights protests in cartoons: then, as now
in the 1960s, america would have been all to happy to extend civil rights to blacks if only they weren’t all just a bunch of lawless looters and rioters.
good thing we’ve grown as a society since then!
in the 1960s, america would have gladly listened to civil rights leaders – if only they weren’t all just stoking so much darn violence all the time!
good thing mlk’s image has been rehabilitated and black leaders are taken seriously now!
in the 1960s, the value of human life was placed above that of inert property - if only those uppity blacks would just take our word for it
thankfully the value of black life is recognized today!
in the 1960s, america really wanted to give black protestors the benefit of the doubt – if only they weren’t just so darn complicit in their own oppression
thank god those antiquated views are all behind us now!
in the 1960s, jobs, education and housing were ripe for the picking for minorities – they just insisted on wasting all that energy on aimless protests instead!
thank heavens we actually listen to their grievances now instead of just telling them to sit down and shut up!
in conclusion, everything would be fine if they had just stayed in the back of the bus instead of getting out and rocking it
(huge thanks to Rebel Blob for digging all these old cartoons up!)
This is still such a good fucking post
another one worth bringing back today
“As a black American man you’re taught that you have to be the most imposing, the most physical, that much better than your counterparts—and being homosexual is perceived as the inverse of that. But finding Chiron’s character, for me, had very little to do with [his] sexuality, because I feel like you fall in love with the mental aspect of people, not the physical. If I’d been born loving men, I’d love them the same way I love women. For me, it was really more about learning to hate myself, because Chiron hates himself. I had to allow myself to feel this disdain towards other people because I couldn’t accept myself. I really didn’t know I wanted to be an actor until this role. [Acting] always felt like pretending. But with this character, I felt as far removed from myself as I could be—and I loved this person. I cried for him.” - Trevante Rhodes about his role in Moonlight
PETA Is A Joke
I’m sorry, but this is so fucking stupid. PETA is claiming that this is what a sheep looks like after it has been sheared. In case you were wondering, this is what a sheep ACTUALLY looks like after it has been sheared:
And that isn’t some “best case” scenario, believe me, I live in a place that has more sheep than people, and all sheared sheep look like that. It does not hurt the animal at all, aside from perhaps the odd slip with the shears resulting in a minor graze. In fact, shearing sheep is necessary for their wellbeing, because domesticated sheep do not shed their wool like a non domesticated sheep would, which can to them looking like this:
This is Shrek, yes, that is actually his name, notice how you can’t see his legs or face? That’s not good. He is a sheep who escaped his field and went wandering for six years, resulting in a sixty pound fleece. This is actually dangerous because it can cause overheating and if they get on their back the weight stops them from getting up again, they can die from this. PETA really cares about money and attention more than animals.
So yeah, fuck PETA, buy wool…and while you’re at it buy some goddamn honey because the bees need the help.
After Shrek was sheared:
HES SMILING
I legitimately teared up at this
There are plenty of “ghetto” kids who are willing to befriend the “weird” or “smart” black kid, but people say they’re the “wrong crowd.”
ya sometimes its the weird black kids that tell the Ghetto ones to leave them alone lmao
And then wonder why some of them may have wanted to beat our asses. I mean, I don’t think handling anger and rejection with violence is called for, but it’s understandable.
I was condescending and insufferable to be around and ghetto black kids were everything my immigrant black parents taught me not to be like.
Part of me wanted to fit in and be like them for the solidarity, comfort and “coolness”, but a larger part took great pride at that time in being treated like “one of the good ones” by authority figures and white people.
I am not AT ALL surprised ghetto black kids didn’t want to be around me.
Ngl, all the hood kids from my school bus in elementary school can kick rocks. I hated those kids. “Why you so tall?”, “Why your report card different from mine?”, “Why you come from the other block?”, “Hey, hey, lemme tell you a secret” *leans into my ear* *SCREAMS AH at 2 million decibels in my ear*. I’m sorry, but THOSE kids, in particular? Fck ‘em.
I went to a mostly white school, where most of the black kids came from my bus. But I wasn’t in any of their classes and I lived 2 blocks away from the bus stop (the bus stopped by the co-op apartment, I lived in the houses). Those kids didn’t want anything to do with me. 5 years, no friends on that bus.
I mean, I know that there’s stereotypes about kids from the hood and that hurts how they’re treated overall but like…..they ain’t all angels lol
“Why do you talk like a white girl?”
“Why do you dress like that?”
*Threatens to assault you because they assume you’re stuck up even though they’ve never actually talked to you to understand that you’re just shy*
White kids weren’t shit either and racist as hell, which is why I stopped being outgoing and became very withdrawn in the first place.
But some hood kids were just plain assholes taking their frustration out on black kids who weren’t like them. My brother was a “cool” kid and not a nerd by any means (he also got treated better by white kids when we first came to the states, especially because he was athletic) and still got jumped by hood kids because he was a foreigner.
Plenty of hood kids grew out of their nonsense, but a lot of them were seriously aggro.
Ok, I still think we’re kind of separating out “white collar bullying” just like we do with crime and putting it in a separate “less dangerous” category from “black-on-black” bullying.
The bullying I received from white kids was more subtle and I rarely felt physically threatened, but it was constant and pervasive and worse still it was hidden and cosigned by white authority figures.
It took me a loooooong time to realize that it fucked me up way worse than being called an Oreo or being teased for not knowing how to dance or ridiculed for talking white by black kids ever did.
And I can’t say enough that both the nerds and the ghetto kids were just that… KIDS!
We’re blaming each other now for how we acted back then but clued-in adults could have made such a huge difference in fostering unity between the groups and making sure neither felt demeaned or abused.
More than anything THEY failed.
for those who say that having an education = being less racist how do you explain the existence of racist frats and sororities? And I don't mean state schools but places like Harvard and Yale?
Because “less” doesn’t equal “non-existent”????
Did you really think this was a good point?
Yo he stupid
why do you all hate black women so much
