arthur  has  often  prided  himself  on  his  impersonal  nature.   raised  by  uther  ,  he  learnt  to  not  let  things  get  to  him.   he  should  be  able  to  not  care.   HE’S BUSY  and  that’s  how  it  is.   noora  isn’t  the  only  person  to  fit  in  his  schedule  and  his  courses  always  take  precedence  over  everything  else  anyway   (  though  he  can  sometimes  admit  to  himself  he’s  been  neglecting  even  them  for  sophia’s  sake  )     

                                                                    and  yet…

𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑾𝑶𝑹𝑫𝑺 𝑪𝑼𝑻 𝑳𝑰𝑲𝑬 𝑲𝑵𝑰𝑽𝑬𝑺  ,  his  body  tenses  up  under  the  weight  of  the  guilt.   it’s  a  gut punch   —   a  cruel  reminder  of  the  situation  they  find  themselves in  but  more  than  that  ,  it  shows  the  harsh  reality  of  the  neglect  he’s  shown.   for  a  second  ,  his  vision  flashes  white   —   anger  ,  fury  ,  then  shame  and  finally  FLIPPANCY.   perhaps  it’s  his  upbringing  or  maybe  it’s  sophia’s  influence  but  he  finds  himself  rejecting  the  pain  her  reproach  elicits  DEEP  in  him.   he  can’t  afford  to  feel  guilty  ,  and  besides  ,  𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒉𝒆  ?

‟  don’t  talk  like  that  about  her.   ”   his  voice  is  CHASTISING  as  he  finally  finds  it  in  himself  to  look  up   ,  emotions  hidden  behind  a  veil  of  perfectly  honed  nonchalance.   ‟   it’s  not  like  you’re  not  busy  too.  ”

          his   words   hit   her   like   daggers   aimed   at   her   heart   ——   he   doesn’t   know   what   she’s   been   going   through   .   he   hasn’t   planned   his   own   mother’s   funeral   .   he   hasn’t   felt   the     blame     come   from   his   younger   sibling   for   what    happened   .   he   didn’t   even     KNOW     what   she   was   going   through   .   how     dare     he   !   he   can’t   waltz   around   with   his   girlfriend   all   day   and   expect   to   know   about   her     crazy     schedule   ,   which   now   consisted   of   laying   in   bed   ,   crying   ,   getting   out   of   bed   to   go   to   class   ,   studying   for   a   couple   hours   ,   then   getting   in   bed   to   cry   again   .

“   you   don’t   get   to   use   that   tone   of   voice   with   me   .   ”   voice   is   equally   harsh   ,   mostly   as   an   attempt   to   hide   the   shaking   in   her   voice   as   she   continues   .   “   you   don’t   know   what   the   hell   i’ve   been   going   through   .   if   you   even     bothered     to   check   with   me   once   in   awhile   ,   you’d   know   i’ve   been   busy   planning   my   mother’s     FUNERAL     .   y’know   ,   ‘ cause   she   was     MURDERED     .     ”

she’s   like   a   waterfall   now   ——   starting   slow   ,   but   eventually   overflowing   .   there’s   no   stopping   her   until   she   reaches   her   natural   finish   .   “   and   if   you   took   your   head   out   of   her     preppy   little   ass     you’d   know   that   i’ve   barely   been   able   to   get   out   of   bed   in   the   morning   and   know   that   carver   won’t   even   talk   to   me   because   he   thinks   it’s   somehow   my   fault   ——   but     PLEASE     ,     your   highness     ——     tell   me   how   i’m   busy   too     .   i’d   love   to   hear   it     .   ”

he  realises  ,  of  course  ,  that  he’s  put  himself  in  this  situation.   HE’S  the  one  who  said  “ sure  ,  anytime  ,  when  would  you  want  to  set  a  date ” .  he should have known  that  it  isn’t  that  easy   —  but  apparently  he  doesn’t  ,  because  he  did  still  said  “ anytime ”  ,  he  still  thought  “ anytime ”…  and  yet  it’s  the  third  proposition  he  has  to  refuse.  the  first  was  because  he  has  to  write a  paper  for  his  political  sociology  class  ,  the  second  was  DATE  NIGHT  with  sophia  and  this  time  —

‟  i  promised  soph’  i’d  drive  her  up  to  birmingham.  ”   his  voice  is  maybe  not  as  APOLOGETIC  as  it  should  be  but  a  hand  still  moves  to  rub  at  his  forehead  awkwardly .   they  haven’t  spent  any  proper  time  together  in  weeks  and  he  does  miss  her  but  sophia  is  sophia  and  she  is  his  girlfriend.   ‟  maybe  we  can  —  ah  ,  damn.  no  ,  that  doesn’t  work  either  ;  we’re  having  a  movie  night  tuesday.  ”

teeth  bite  on  his  lip  as  he  stares  at  his  schedule  ,  an  INFINITE  ABYSS  of  studying  and  girlfriend  time.   a  pang  of  guilt  starts  to  gnaw  at  him  ,  𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕  𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈  deep  in  his  bowels  ,  eyes  incapable  of  looking  at  noora’s  face.  it  shouldn’t  be  this  hard  to  see  a  friend  ,  and  it  shouldn’t  feel  so  wrong  to  spend  time  with  his  girlfriend  either.

‟  maybe  next  week  ?  i’ve  got  a  couple  hours  spare  on  friday  morning.  ”

       fists   clench   ,   knuckles   turn   paper   white   .   she   doesn’t   even   want   to   look    at   arthur   right   now   .   he’d   been   distancing   himself   from   her   ,   slowly   but   surely   over   the   past   few   months   .   noora   knew   the   cause   ,   too     ——     sophie     .   she   enveloped   their   lives   outside   of   homework   and   had   taken   over   not   just   arthur’s   studies   ,   but   her     own     .   she   didn’t   even   know   the   last   time   he’d   asked   her   how   she   was     ——     did   he   even   know   her   mother   had   died     ?

noora   glances   down   at   the   ground   for   a   moment   ,   trying   her   best   to   just    slow    her   breathing   ——   she   can’t   cry   ,   not   in   front   of   him   .   did   he   even   deserve   to   see   her   vulnerable   like   that   anymore   ?   she   hadn’t   actually   spoken   to   him   for   months   .

and   he   can’t   even     look     at   her     .   her   chest   hurts   ,   nails   press   into   her   palm     .   “     arthur     .     ”     fists   unclench   ,   staring   at   the   marks   that   were   now   embedded   into   her   hand   .   she   shakes   them   before   hiding   them   behind   her   back   .   “   i   deserve   more   than   a   couple   hours   you   can     spare     on   a   friday     .   ”      a   pause   .     “   so   do   your   studies   .   surely   sophie   can   understand   that   if   she   wants   you   to   keep   buying   her   those   expensive   things     .   ”
