What Is a Magnetic Drill, Mag Drill & How To Use It?

A magnetic drill is a specialized drill used for construction with steel or other metals. The high-powered magnet in the base clamps the drill tightly to steel or another piece of metal, preventing the drill from moving. The magnet in the base is strong enough even to hold the drill upside-down while it is operating. The magnetic drill consists of the magnetic base, a column where the drill head is mounted and a powerful motor. This tool allows construction workers and sculptors to drill very regular holes in a short amount of time.

Magnetic Base

A magnetic drill uses an electromagnet in its base that sticks directly to the metal surface you are drilling. The power of the magnet ensures the machine will not move, even when drilling through thick metal. The strong base provides more leverage than a hand drill does, allowing the user to make more even holes without the wobble of a hand drill. The magnet also allows the drill to operate upside-down, underneath a piece of metal. Some magnetic drills clamp onto a metal work bench or other metal surface and include a table for drilling through other materials.

Powerful Motor

Because the magnetic drill is designed for metal working, it has a powerful motor that will drill through even thick metal in a short amount of time. The drill itself is mounted on a column that, depending on the model you use, will lower automatically or manually. With a powerful motor and a strong mount, even if you lower the head manually, the drill does most of the work.

Portability

Most magnetic drills are lightweight and portable. They are designed around using the magnetic clamp as their base, so the drills are intended to be temporarily mounted on whatever surface you are drilling through. Because of this, if you are working on a small but thick piece of metal, you can place the drill directly onto the metal rather than trying to put the metal onto a workbench. Additionally, the drill can be moved directly onto larger structures, preventing the operator from having to use a slower, lower-powered hand drill.

A magnetic drill will work on rusty, painted, hard or even very thick metal. Most models allow the operator to use a variety of attachments, making the drill versatile enough for many types of construction work.
