that’s the thing though. she didn’t speak a word of that until gon’s getting ready to leave for the hunter exam, and she says it while clearly upset (and drinking) over her son leaving. in the manga she admits to the custody thing before he actually leaves the island - she says “ging left you with us as a baby”, and then tells the truth within the same chapter. and gon straight-up says he already knew and doesn’t mind because she did it to protect him.
