Tieria was very quiet while Neil talked. There was more information being given out, more than what he’d been given in their brief conversation over webcam. More than he’d gotten when he’d been speaking with Neil before Regene and Lyle had arrived. All he could do was sit there and stroke gently through Fish’s soft fur and try to keep calm.
He was happy to have Neil back, he really was. But there was this nagging thought that they could have helped, that he and Regene could have found a way to make this better.
and that if he had even been slightly more skilled, this wouldn’t have happened in the first place.
Tieria closed his eyes and tried to keep himself calm. Again, he stroked through Fish’s fur as the dog leaned up and licked his cheek. A sign of comfort. That things were okay.
He glanced over at Lyle, who looked like he was revisiting the urge to deck Neil, but only wasn’t because he was so shocked by everything Neil had said. He glanced to his brother and then back to his lap.
Yes...he believed Neil when he said that if he had felt safe he would have returned. He really did.
“I still think you and Golden were wrong to keep this from us.” Tieria’s voice was soft, but he managed to meet Neil’s eye. “I know you were doing this to keep us safe, you two had the right intentions...but...”
There was no reason to carry the burden by themselves. Hadn’t Neil and Lyle been telling that to Tieria and Regene from the beginning? There was no reason for them to rely solely on themselves.
He shook his head. “But...that’s all in the past. Dwelling on it doesn’t do anything now.”
But Tieria was going to dwell. Because there was part of him that was so angry.
“I think the question is what you’re wanting us to do...” Tieria’s voice was back to sounding so small, almost timid.
