“I can come out,” replied the tangled mess of a man, trying to untangle himself. The one in his mind was much worse, though. But he was glad Odette wasn’t nearby. She wouldn’t notice, and even then, they can say that they were talking. It wouldn’t be a lie.
Once he untangled himself, he found himself by her side in his bedroom. They both wished the other hadn’t found out this way, that was beyond obvious. Here, he placed a gentle hand on her arm. Even his voice was soft. He couldn’t imagine what was going on in her mind. “Do you wanna sit?” Everything else was up in the air, already known between them.
Marley watched Adam as he got up and left the bathroom before him, checking whether Odette was still on the swing outside through the bedroom window. When Adam placed his hand on her arm, she turned to look at him, looking up at him as usual. She felt embarrassed about how this had come up and she felt scared about how Adam would react now. But at least he didn’t seem angry. “Yes, sure. Yes, let’s sit down.” She walked over to Adam’s bed and sat down at the side that she would be sleeping in whenever she stayed over. Her bottom lip felt raw at how much she had chewed on it already and suddenly, the pattern of the floorboards was very interesting. She didn’t want to see her own worries in Adam’s eyes and least of all she wanted to see worse than that.
