I've been thinking about the Supernatural Investigations series recently (when aren't I) and I realised that Dylan and Elsie have a lot in common. If Dylan wasn't the world's most evil tween, I think that they could have been really good friends
-Dylan is a technologist and Elsie is an inventor. It would have been so interesting to see them use their respective talents together
- They're both pretty good at playing people. Dylan gets close to people, only to stab them in the back, and Elsie gets resources/info for Amari's investigations by either persuading people into giving them to her (eg books from Director Fokus or making bets with Arthur to gain information)
- Their arcs in the first book are really similar in that they both become more courageous/bold after befriending Amari. At the beginning of the book, they're both shown to avoid conflict, like when we see Elsie running away from Lara after introducing Amari to her, and how Dylan is only nice to Amari in private because he doesn't want to upset his father. However, by the end of the book, Elsie stands up to a group of agents and breathes fire at them to keep them from getting to Amari, and Dylan lets her demonstrate her ability during his trial even if it was just a distraction for him to open the great vault.
-They've both been close to Lara at some point
- They're both part of a rare magical species, with Elsie being one of the only were-dragons left and Dylan being a born magician, which isolates him from magicians in the League who see him as their future leader. Elsie and Dylan could have bonded over feeling like there's nobody else in the supernatural world like them.
- They're both othered by their peers because they're part of a rare magical species. While Dylan isn't openly a born magician until he goes to the Sightless Depths, we can guess how people would treat him based on how they treat Maria and Amari. For Elsie, its mentioned in book 1 that people didn't want to room with her because she was a were-dragon, and they were worried that she'd eat them.
- They've both spent a lot of time researching their species' respective cultures and history
- They're both smart enough to get a pretty good understanding of the Wonders
- While we don't see much of Elsie's adoptive parents or her relationship with them, her upbringing reminds me a little of Dylan's. Elsie's parents are Legacies, like the Van Helsings, even if they're not as famous, and Director Van Helsing and Elsie's parents seem to share similar views, given how they're wary of Amari. While Elsie doesn't seem to hate her parents the way that Dylan hates his family, we do see that she isn't all that close to them either.
I need a fic where Dylan and Elsie become friends through Lara and she ends up power of friendship-ing the evil out of him
