Two Weeks Until The Tales of the Seven Keys (Aug. 31-Oct. 25, 2026)

We're holding an eight-week event this fall to celebrate the Quest for the Seven Keys in The Magicians (Lev Grossman, SyFy) from August 31-October 25, 2026, Eastern time. Please join us!

For this event, anything Keys Quest is welcome! We'll have one week per key, and one catch-up/overall quest week. Also, with relaxed posting, anything related to the Quest for the Seven Keys will be welcome anytime, just in case you're not retrieving your keys in the same order as the show or the same way as the books, or want to collect several at the same time! We know collecting keys is hard; we're flexible! If you would like to focus on specific keys during their highlight weeks, here's the weekly breakdown. You may use Week 8 as a catch-up/hold-all/general keys quest week.

However, if you'd like to use relaxed posting and add your key in a different week, or post about several keys at once, or the quest as a whole, feel free to do that anytime.

Either way, we simply request that you identify your keys at the start of the work (more than one key is fine) and/or let us know that the entry is for "Anything Keys Quest." (As with multiple keys, you may feel your work is both "general keys quest" and featuring one or more keys; that's fine, too!)

Week 1 (Aug. 31-Sept. 6): Illusion Key Week 2 (Sept. 7-Sept. 13): Truth Key Week 3 (Sept. 14-Sept. 20): Time Key Week 4 (Sept. 21-Sept. 27): Abyss Key Week 5 (Sept. 28-Oct. 4): Unity Key Week 6 (Oct. 5-Oct. 11): Realm Key Week 7 (Oct. 12-Oct. 18): Vision Key Week 8 (Oct. 19-Oct. 25): Anything Keys Quest All forms of fan content are welcome (art, collage, comic, cosplay, edit, fic, filk, gif, pinboard, playlist, podfic, vid, etc.). It can be a new work or a continuation of an existing WIP. There are no limits or requirements for amount or size, etc.

As usual for our events, new additions to existing WIPs are welcome. Likewise, entries can be the start of a new WIP. As many or as few pieces as you wish to enter are fine. If you're making multiple chapters or pieces for the same work, feel free to submit them as separate entries!

From Aug. 31-Oct. 25, 2026, Eastern time, please post your works to Tumblr and/or AO3 (this challenge takes place on both) following the guidelines we'll share before the event. If you make something on another platform (such as a vid on YouTube, a pinboard on Pinterest, art or cosplay on Instagram, a song on Bandcamp), please share a post with a link to that content on Tumblr and/or AO3.

Amnesty Week 2026 has closed (Did we see your post?)

From August 10-16, 2026 (Eastern time zone), we held our second annual Amnesty Week! We welcomed fanworks of all types celebrating The Magicians (Lev Grossman/SyFy). For this event, we reopened all our previous non-recurring challenges. (Note: That didn't include Queliot Week; this separate recurring event reopens its own prior themes.)

This challenge took place on Tumblr and AO3. If you made something and posted it from August 10-16, 2026, Eastern time, but we haven’t reblogged it by around 9 AM Eastern on August 17, 2026, please make sure your work checked the boxes below (especially make sure to submit this form to let us know you made something). The instructions below (and the original event guidelines) also provide some troubleshooting information for posting on Tumblr or adding your work to our AO3 subcollections.

Are You With Me (chpt 3)

Amnesty WEEK 2026: Aug. 10-Aug. 16, 

Welcome Home Event

Prompt: Returning after absence (or returning to being themselves).

Before:

Josh adjusted his glasses, though one lens was cracked down the center. How much could he possibly see when they were like that, Quentin wondered. It seemed like something he should at least complain about. Then again, they had far more pressing issues than broken glasses to worry over. It was easier to focus on broken glasses. Easier to keep his mind on an inconvenience than allow himself to look farther into the doom.

If he'd been half the magician he thought he was when he was still at Brakebills, he'd have fixed those glasses for him. Not that he could do it now when all his fingers were broken. Once upon a time, though, he would have had the spell in his mind. 

Julia could have fixed them even with broken fingers, he bet. So could Alice. They were better than he'd ever been, and yet, he always wanted to be special. With the distance of what seemed like a thousand years, he could see how foolish his desperate longing to be something had been. They were the ones who could have won. It was bad luck for Fillory that they got a magic drug dealer and a mediocre magician.

"We might be in over our heads..." Josh admitted it so calmly, his voice quiet even in the silence of the forest. He made it sound bland, which was oddly nice. 

Forests were supposed to have sound. They were full of life. Fillorian ones more than most, considering some of the trees could slip out of the ground like removing shoes and walk away on their roots. It was a very bad sign when things were quiet. Everyone knew that. Quiet meant there was something bad hiding in the trees. In the dark. 

The thing was, it was hard to care about the quiet when the pain in his hands made him ready to pass out; made his ears start to ring like a car radio that couldn't catch a station. The pain wasn't even fresh and his body still kept reacting if he let himself think about more than the crack in Josh's glasses. He should get used to the pain; he was fairly sure. Once he got used to it. How long did it take to get used to it?

Josh's glasses were cracked. Right down the center of the lens. 

Something snapped to their left, sharp and sudden.

Not good. 

His heart kicked in his chest, and so did the pain. They both jumped at the sound but didn't dare run until they were sure what way to go. Which way would be away? Which way would take them back to Brakebills? Back home? Back to Julia, Eliot, Margo, and Alice? Even Penny. If he could go that way, that was the way he wanted to be.

The Fire We See (ch 4)

Warm Up

Prompts; •“warming up” to someone or something

Eliot had to grow himself some wings to get off that mountain, but he made it back to the castle in good time. There was little else he could do besides running around asking if anyone just happened to have seen a dragon go by recently. If he was going to get it done, he was going to need a bit of help. Especially if Quentin ran away because he was having urges to find something that was less cooked and still running rather than the failed meal during the night. Maybe he should have let his dear dragon friend eat it raw, but that still seemed wrong on so many levels. He had always been the cook at the Cottage.

Oh, what a world! Pete and his dragon never had these kinds of problems. The stories should include these helpful details when giving children big ideas about getting a nice, magical dragon. Though the kids might be traumatized somewhere along the meat preparation stretch of the story. So, he guessed that might be why they left all of that out. But still, a clue or two would have gone a long way!

He would have expected Tick Pickwick to congratulate him copiously for his practicality in supplying his own transportation if only his arrival had not been to mass pandemonium. It was hard to arrive in style when people were already screaming and dashing hither and yon. He dropped down on the balcony of the throne room, and he could tell something was wrong on the home front in addition to his loss of a larger flying lizard king. Oh, the joys of Fillory never ended. Fen and Rafe were the only ones to notice him, in fact, which would have been insulting without the aforementioned pandemonium. Everyone else was either running in or out of the throne room. He offered a little kingly wave just in case anyone was looking, but he might as well not have bothered.

This chapter celebrates home life at the Mosaic.

Welcome! I'm writing a series of haiku exploring the lifetime shared by Eliot and Quentin at the Mosaic in The Magicians 3x05, "A Life in the Day." The poems are paired with images from the show (sometimes from other episodes where needed), and I'm slowly making art for those scenes, which will be displayed in the mirror chapters on AO3 when finished. (The AO3 chapters often include more haiku before & after the chapter proper, and in some cases, notes about the poems or art.)

Both

Working sunny days, not always bothering with sunblock or clothing

Love to see you sweat, glisten. Pout for me, sweetheart. Strike that sexy pose

Feel so at home we’re silly, play all sorts of games. So much fun with you.

Quentin

I thought we’d solve it anniversary night: couldn’t help celebrating

I always loved him, Eliot my mainstay: best bosom companions

But thought Alice was my one great love: determined not to quit on her

We’re many people; each of us holds multitudes: contradicting us

Eliot’s easy to be with, fun, doesn’t ask for more than one night

I knew going in he wouldn’t mind I still loved Alice. He knew me.

I’m complicated but loyal; messy, but true; loving (love them both)

I never thought El wanted more. He seemed happy enough day by day

Might go home any time: to when we started, where Alice waits for me

Got set in my ways thinking things stay put—El’s my friend; Alice, my love.

So when time dragged on I chose to live my life with a smart, pretty blonde.

But when it was done I missed him so much: his hands patient, eyes so soft

Eliot

Make the best of it: Q seems happy, doesn’t fight with her like with me.

No morning-after questions: “About last night.” Kiss her once and he’s gone

As if he’s proving something to me—or to him. Shows her he’s all in.

It’s fine. They’re lovely. Teddy is amazing. I’m just glad to be here.

That’s all I feel, right? He’s still my best friend. Nothing’s changing there, thank fuck.

(I wouldn’t do this without you, Q. But it’s hard. Briefly, you were mine

In a completely non-possessive way. I’d share, but she won’t want that—

I’ve heard the story of how you made your play when Lunk touched new peaches.)

I love you and her. You’re beautiful together. Sweet, loving, perfect.

Men in the village: tasty enough for one night; a snack, not a meal

Working at the tiles: Q’s in our cottage with her. Lonely, angry, but

They clearly care, so I put on my party face, smile, show I love them

Grin and bear it? No, I’m happy for them. They’re my fam. I’m Guncle El.

It just hurts. So I fold these feelings with care, packed away in cedar

For a day when we’re old, or go home. Maybe then you’ll be mine again

Quentin

Won’t apologize, But his eyes are so hurt. He turns away to hide

I’m not sorry for wanting to go home, live my life the way I want.

Is this forever? I always wanted kids. See Dad in Teddy’s face.

While I can manage I’ll be the best dad, husband, And, yes, friend, I can.

Seriously, El. We had fun. I love her. Don’t look at me that way.

She’s pretty. Sweet. Kind to Quentin. Offers something he clearly needs, so

Good for him, I guess. Never really thought I was endgame or substance.

But I hoped, okay? Still, I can be mature, friends with true love’s true love.

Silver lining: this kid, Mini Q, so cute. I love him for himself

So adorable true sweetness in my life (glad I’m allowed to love

One Coldwater): wish he were my kid, but at least he’s my good buddy.

He soothes my lonely heart, makes me laugh, heals the wound Q left in my heart.

Jealousy: I fought it every day. Makes the grief sharper when she’s gone

I never wished her any harm: so gentle, sweet She was my friend too

Don’t deserve comfort: not when I get to hold Q, tuck Teddy in nights

Sharp pain at her loss, guilt: now they’re my own family to protect and love

Stacking tiles, Teddy builds Whitespire, crafts four royals: friends with flower crowns.

Tile memory game: Flip color-sides down. Turn, match: Pairs make art. All win.

“When I grow up, I’m a magical king like Dad and Papa. You’ll see!”

“I need a good crown.” Papa sews me one. “Some spells!” Dad shows fireworks.

“I want to see worlds like you have,” I say one day. Dad’s messenger bag

Came from Earth, sturdy artifact, helped him through lots of quests. “Take it, son.”

Papa smiles, hugs me. “Come back to visit. Be well.” Dad’s sternness hides tears.

My dads are both kings- to-be: a secret that keeps me brave. I come home

Build a house with my husband and wife. My cousins supply peaches, plums.

Our kids love orchards, climb trees, pick stone fruit, learn the family business.

They’re future royals. Papa dies. Dad writes the queen: “Here’s our family.”

Quentin

Never thought I’d live To see old age. Broken brain Agony too much

Sometimes to do more than hang on. You held me close, kept me safe from me.

You handled with care, not like a burden, like you wanted to be there.

Like I was the most precious thing in your world, too dear to ever lose.

“Save overthinking for the puzzle” also meant patience for me—lots

more than I may have deserved (I’d get mean, snarky; you always forgave)

Here for each other always, still: “Love never dies,” you said: I believe.

Of course, once he realized Eliot was singing a song about his feelings for Quentin, Q was delighted--and began to form plans of his own. Art originally created for Magicians Settings Week—fic begun three years later! This whole fic and art are inspired by "Not Gonna Say" by Lauren Fairweather, an amazing song from Eliot's point of view. More about this in the notes!

Summary:

Plans to save Lance and Rupert continue to take shape. Quentin feels homesick for the Mosaic. Eliot says something before he intended to, but he’s not going to take it back.
