My mom likes to tell me about how when I was a little kid riding public transport with her I'd always smile and giggle and chat with weird old ladies who smelled like cat pee and homeless folks and strangers dressed in bizarre outfits but any time a tidy and respectable businessman in a suit and tie waved at me I'd immediately clam up, and she takes a great deal of pride in my supposed inherentability to clock personalities but the truth is I do vaguely remember those bus rides, and it was never about the clothes or the hair or the smell, but more because everyone "strange" asked interesting questions and listened to what I had to say and seemed to think about what I said while the neat and tidy and rigid folks only ever acted like they were going through the motions, which was boring as hell and also pretty annoying

I think it’s interesting that they all picture cute little gardens and never the process of raising and butchering livestock, which is probably the only way that the commune is going to get sufficient protein.

...endless exhausting physical labor, the smell of shit, getting up at 6 AM if you're lucky, being incredibly dirty, having to be outside for hours most days whatever the weather is like, never being able to take a break unless there's someone else to do the work because a lot of this stuff does need to be done over every fucking day,the sensation of little bits of straw getting inside your clothes and sticking to your sweaty skin for which the word itching is absolutely inadequate, cows stepping on your toes.

(Source: the two weeks I spent "helping out" at a local farm in eighth grade as part of the school's "learn about jobs" program. I'm grateful for it, because it cured me forever of any romanticism about farming or the countryside.)

(Full disclosure, I understand why people dream about growing things and so forth. But there are way too many people who want to make policy decisions based on those dreams.)
