I’ve had enough concussions to a fill a high school football team, broken more ribs than I have fingers, split open my head, nearly lost an eye, been strangled to unconsciousness on more than one occasion, and have experienced the shitty world of genital mutilation. At five years old, I was proficient at splinting broken fingers with colorful band aids pilfered from the bathroom. At eight, I didn’t even flinch when a knife slipped while cooking and I cut my finger to the bone. With a sort of poise and tired acceptance unnatural in one that age, I simply sat over the sink and held my finger together until it clotted and tightly wrapped the wound in bandages until it slowly, slowly healed. By four, I fed myself, dressed myself, and often took care of my younger siblings. 

Yesterday, my brother sexually assaulted me while he thought I was asleep. 

I’m terrified. I need to leave.
