His parents were an absolute shitshow of arguing and generally being awful people. They never really wanted a child so having one around was an inconvenience more than anything else, and he knew it. The one perk was that he basically got free roam and that was a great excuse to avoid coming home to verbal abuse. He ran off to join Rocket at 16 and since leaving has only seen his parents once accidentally after moving back to Hoenn. They happened to be at the same place, same time, and met eyes, they didn’t say anything and acted as though the hadn’t seen him. Suffice to say he’s extremely bitter towards them.

As a result he doesn’t really have a strong concept of family or any particular desire to have one. Being married and settled is a nice concept to him, though. It’s just the thought of children that he absolutely abhors. No matter what level his own ego is at he knows he would never be a good parent, it’s just not something he feels like he’s cut out for, even if he also thinks that Archie would make a great dad. In all actually he probably wouldn’t be that terrible if for some reason they also accidentally ended up with a child in their care.

There’s a slow slur of words, stuttering and murmuring, he hasn’t cried not yet. But when they touch he falls apart easily into murmurs of things he wants, while knowing and speaking dejectedly. He hovers by the door, eyes cast down, unfocused, drunk. “I’m still in love with you.”

There’s only so much he can tolerate. Occasional flings already bordered on unbearable unless one or both of them is plastered. Loveless fucking is enough to sate the body and he takes what he can when being with anyone else still feels like some kind of betrayal. It’s that hope of rough, meaningless touch that lets him so close, lets the man into his house with intent he thought he knew better. But hearing those words stops the redhead in his tracks and sends him back several paces. If not a physical blow, it earns just as much of a recoil. 

His face remains even, if nothing else tired, despite urges rising in his throat to shout at him. How is it fair that it’s always Maxie that has to be the adult? Why does he always have to fall back on sense and logic? As though the larger man is determined to rip allowance for emotion from his hands then in the same motion question how he became so cold. One of them has to be, when the other goes around drunk saying stupid shit like this. It leaves a dull ache in his chest that hurts worst on sleepless nights. For once he wants to be able to snap and pour out every horrible feeling that festers in his mind at the sight of Archie -- no, the Team Aqua leader, a sworn rival and fucking idiot who can’t leave well enough alone -- but again it’s swallowed down. Shouting with someone who’s only half-present for the fight is pointless, he insists. 

So he remains cold in treatment. 

‘ You’re drunk and I don’t need to remind you why I don’t -- ‘ And yet he chokes on the words. ‘ I don’t care how you feel. You need to leave, right now. ‘

Green hums lowly, can understand the somewhat searching tone the man was giving him, even if he didn’t like the overt interest the man was showing. All the same, he politely turns to face the man properly.

“I heard about the events that happened here,” He says by way of answer. “It fascinates me to see a place of such significance.” Magatama is still partly hidden behind him, and he reaches with his only hand to gently pat their nose. “It’s okay love, they won’t hurt you.” He soothes, voice even as he keeps his sharp gaze on the strange trainer.

“What about yourself? You seem familiar with this place - it can’t be idle curiosity that brings a man like yourself here either.” There’s the faintest edge of challenge in his voice, but he’s polite enough to keep it mostly hidden. “Do you have history here?“ He asks.

Do you have a history here? Laughter rises in his throat that he forces back down, even if the light in his eyes proves more difficult to hold back. There’s almost something skeptical about him. As though Maxie is the one out of place revisiting his past failure to remind himself how it feels; that there is no trying again, not from him nor anyone else.

‘ Yes. I’ve been here many times. ‘ He glazes over the questions for now to move around. All the while bright eyes are trained on the strange pokemon still, curious of its presence with the younger man. ‘ What do you think? Of that...”event”, as you call it? I’ve heard such awful things about that Team Magma and what they’ve done. The region was almost destroyed. ‘ 

It’s not a lie, necessarily. He has heard awful things about his team, himself, about what their plans had apparently been according to news stations.

It’s unclear if he is even the audience for the words spoken. But there is little else around, no one in earshot save for himself. Bright gaze lands on her figure and watches there as the statement unravels behind his frames. Whoever the woman may be her presence is foreign in the region; the style is older, more traditional to somewhere else. He settles for a blunt observation. ‘ That’s an odd thing to blurt out in front of a stranger. ‘
