Claude Denjean- Moog!
Recently acquired original 70s vinyl gatefold version of wacky instrumental pop cover tunes highlighting the Moog modular synthesizer by French synthmaster Claude Denjean. Super sweet 70s space-age bachelor pad packaging and cover with a gatefold featuring album info and some excellent moog photos.
Without a doubt the heavily layered- almost proto-synth/dream pop cover of Bob Dylanās āLay Lady Layā is what put this on my list of must-have Moog records. Admittedly my Dylan knowledge is sparse (gasp!) so had to go YouTube a listen to the original and definitely had a laugh hearing it in comparison to Denjeanās version.
Other favorite tracks on the record include a super dense synth-pad heavy version of Moody Bluesā Nights in White Satin and an ominous, almost brooding version of The Beatlesā Come Together with super thick Moog bass line and the lead patch for the verse vocal part that basically sounds like the synth is shooting pure electricity directly out of the speakers.
Recorded at Sofrason Studios, Paris and Studios AndrƩ Perry Studios, Montreal
Released 1971

New Tacoma studio up and running!
Finished Patchbays, Experimental Tracks, night., Chapel Supremesus Mix Updateā¦
2.3.16.
Finished up the wiring and patchbay update. Nice clean labeling on all inputs, color coded and much easier to read. Upgraded all the snakes to the console with much more robust cabling- more detail on that in the last post. Added all the studio instruments to the bay and console Line Inputs for quick and easy recording, filling up all those inputs on the bay. Nice also to get all of the outboard gear readily accessible.
The updated patchbay flexibility makes it quick to try some interesting signal paths on the fly and get creative with sound processing. Also itās very nice having the secondary patchbay and live racks linked to the main rack patchbay, and having them all interconnected and normaled to the console. Ā
Revisiting some old pieces of outboard gear which have been overlooked with the addition of so many amazing plugins has been pretty fun switching it up a bit. Though definitely I love the virtual modeled plugin versions of all those classic pieces of gear, and I will admit to being mostly immersed in the virtual software world for the most part in the last few years, there is something so nice and creatively inspiring about being able to get that direct experience of patching in a piece of gear and the tactile response turning the knobs⦠not to mention that whole thing of having to get creative when working within the set of limitations actual hardware inherently imposes on the process.
Also upgraded the patch cables to some very nice military-grade ADC trs cables which were found at a crazy low price on eBay. Itās kind of insane, each of these cables if bought new, individually go for like $30⦠I have no idea who buys a 1ā patch cable at that price, I found 1ā,2ā, and 3ā for around $4-$5 each. I really like the ultra slim connectors, very much like the smaller TT jacks but in the ¼" format.
While testing the bay connections, I was watching an amazing John Cage / Avant Garde Documentary in the background and got inspired. I realized Iām not hitting record nearly enough, and over a few nights made a pretty crazy textural noise piece using ultra massively distorted guitar, and Moog synth triggering some nice side-chain compression on the guitars, lots of spring reverb weirdness and some mangled samples of John Cage talking about his chance operations composition approach.
In checking out all the connections and sound mangling, got very inspired to make more strange textural pieces so there just might be a series of avant-experimental-noise inspired tracks coming soon- I will post those as more of a theme and direction for the project take shape.
In other studio news, work on the upcomingĀ night. EP continues, andĀ all of Kerryās parts are recorded for the Chapel Supremesus, Day I Achieved Contact re-release so the mixing stage has begun. Very excited to get that and the new commentary DVD done soon. The addition of Kerryās flute, bass, melodica, and ethereal vocals are adding a new life and dimension to the project. We are all very excited for the next stage of the project. Progress has been slow moving as we have all been busy in other aspects of music, life, ect, ect. All new tracks are on the way as well, we will most certainly be adding some live dates to support the re-release so stay tunedā¦

2016 Patch Bay / Cabling Update
1.11.16.
Starting 2016 off with a big cabling and patch bay upgrade, and general update to the studio signal flow.
In the process of replacing the various studio patch bays with Neutrik NYS-SPP-L1ā²s. A while back I added one of these and was so happy with it I decided to slowly replace all my patch bays with these. The jacks grip the cables so tight there is no chance of them accidentally being dislodged when moving things around. Super solid metal housing, very high quality throughout and very clean appearance and clear layout numbering without any unnecessary visual clutter. Spent the last few days working on an Excel spreadsheet on the patch bay layout to help figure out some signal flow changes and then going print out some nice color coded labels for all the insert points. Really nice working in a spreadsheet as it gives the ability to visually see flow of everything and easily drag things around to make changes.
If you're interested in taking a look at the layout you can take a look here - MLS Patch Bay Layout
With the new little Orange amp addition, decided to make a guitar effects chain in the secondary studio rack. I also decided to link up some gear from the live rack to make it a bit easier to use in the studio. We now have the Boss GL-100 guitar driver and the Accutronics Accuverb spring reverb / tube preamp normaled to the Orange amp. The Orange can be played through the internal āVoice of the Worldā speaker or through the speaker simulator output which gets sent to the patch bay for further routing.
In addition to the patch bay upgrades, I also am in the process of upgrading all the cabling with soldered nickel 22 awg trs snakes. Doing quite a bit of research on cabling materials, wiring sizes, shielding, ect. Trying to avoid dumping unnecessary money on hype and b.s. which I feel like a lot of the cabling companies out there try to pull... Iāll probably post a little article on the topic at some point.
The thought did cross my mind to go with the smaller tt jacks, but I really like the ease and convenience of 1/4ā³ format, not to mention the thought of soldering hundreds of tiny connections seems less than appealing atm. Not to mention there are a lot of gear changes planned in the near future, so sticking to the 1/4ā³ format for now makes for more flexibility as we upgrade the studio. More pics on the way once everything gets labeled.

Merry Crimbas!!
Kerry completely surprised me with this super sweet little Orange Crush 12 combo amp! This little guy is 12 Watts, has a 6ā³ speaker, and after messing around with it a bit Iām quite literally shocked at how good it sounds. Ā For a solid-state little practice amp it really does capture the feel of that Orange tube tone pretty remarkably. Ā
It has four gain stages including eq, overdrive, gain, and overall volume. The three band eq is very smooth and responsive. Usually the eq on solid-state amps can be harsh and narrow but the sound of this eq is very nice and round. It definitely has that kind of response a tube amp gets where adjustment of one band has an effect of the the others. Between the overdrive and gain knobs you can get a really nice and wide variation of tones- nice presence in the clean tones, sludgy fuzz, and warm overdrive.
Looking a little further into this amp I found itās using the same design as on their tube Rockerverb amps, just using solid-state amplification. They also didn't skimp on the speaker- itās got one of their 6ā³ Voice of the World driver loaded in the closed back cab and for being so small it gets pretty dang loud. When plugged into the headphone jack, the speaker mutes and goes through their analog CabSim circuitry that emulates the frequency response of running out of one of their 4x12 speaker cabs. This thing is also going to be fun to run synths and mangle sounds with! Thanks Kerry!!!!Ā
