“I don’t think I wanna know what you’re talking about.”
“I’m not high enough to see what I just saw.”
“He’s a moron, but that makes him almost fun to deal with.”
“Right? He’s gotta plush pad too. I’m still kickin’ it there.”
“Why don’t you fucking darken up Miss Cyan.”
“Wow, what an insult,” the girl responded, rolling her eyes. “Didn’t think I could expect much from the cheersquad.”
“When they said you gotta eat the booty like groceries, the cannibals in this town took it for real...”
“Seriously? Actually, I would believe that. But wait, how would fruit sacrifice him?”
“I don’t know, man. Didn’t think through the process. He believed it though.”
“If you even fucking think about stealing my bike I’ll end you in one brutal bloody slash. Got it?”
“Lighten up, blondie.”
“Eli, he keeps taking the damn bench and I hate him. Not only for that, but lots of reasons.”
“He’s fuckin’ weird. I told him berries where gonna sacrifice him n shit yesterday. Think he believed it too.”
“Because I hate sharing, really.”
“Seems legit. Who you tryin’ to get rid of?”
“I can offer you a hand, if you need it.” Sallon smirked.
“I ain’t stoppin’ ya, sailor moon.”
“Maybe s-some are vegetarian berries.”
“Don’t think so. I heard Obama’s a secret berry too.”
He stuck his tongue out at her and sighed. “Well, my sign is lovely. Took me all day to find a library with cheap printing.”
“Why you got a sign?” she asked, looking up at him.
“This isn’t a joke, kid.”
“Nothin’s a joke with ya, is it, officer?”
“Why are you stroking your ego now?”
“Because fuck it, that’s why. If no one thinks good of me, I’m gonna.”
Lennox’s throat tightened at the thought of conronting one of those groups. She had spent so much of her life worrying about the consequences of being open about her power – being so close to people so fundamentally against her sent a chill down her spine. “That’s one way to look at it. I don’t get it – it’s not like any of us really asked for these gifts, anyway. How can they hate us just for existing?”
“They need somethin’ to hate,” the girl replied. “If it ain’t us, it’s the gays, the immigrants, the people they don’t like. They don’t like any of us, anyone who’s different ‘n shit.”
“You’re so modest.”
“We all know it.”
He glanced up as he taped the ‘EVICTION’ paper to a bench in the middle of the park. “Oh, yea, I’m just making sure someone doesn’t come back.”
Mags plonked herself onto the bench, one leg coming up to rest on the remaining space. “What’s good?”
