This is the video that brought the kakapo into the spotlight; while filming a television special about critically endangered animals, Sirocco the kakapo got a little too amourous with zoologist Mark Carwardine.  Sirocco, who had been raised by humans after his mother became too ill to care for him, had apparently imprinted on humans to the degree that he saw them as potential mates, resulting in the above clip.

The video went viral quickly, and kakapo researchers realised there was potential.  Sirocco has been officially declared the “spokes-bird” for New Zealand wildlife conservation, and has his own Facebook and Twitter accounts.  He has also spent some time touring New Zealand, raising kakapo awareness.  

Since then, kakapo awareness has spread across the internet, and it’s all thanks to one male’s overactive and misguided libido.
