Iâve been watching a lot of courage the cowardly dog lately and Iâve been really impressed by some of the art work on this show. I mean look at this shit. This some cool as scenery.
Detlev Foth - Hiltrup, der TagÂ
I once saw a high school teacher lead a simple, powerful exercise to teach his class about privilege and social mobility. He started by giving each student a scrap piece of paper and asked them to crumple it up.
Then he moved the recycling bin to the front of the room.
He said, âThe game is simple â you all represent the countryâs population. And everyone in the country has a chance to become wealthy and move into the upper class.â
âTo move into the upper class, all you must do is throw your wadded-up paper into the bin while sitting in your seat.â
The students in the back of the room immediately piped up, âThis is unfair!â They could see the rows of students in front of them had a much better chance.
Everyone took their shots, and â as expected â most of the students in the front made it (but not all) and only a few students in the back of the room made it.
He concluded by saying, âThe closer you were to the recycling bin, the better your odds. This is what privilege looks like. Did you notice how the only ones who complained about fairness were in the back of the room?â
âBy contrast, people in the front of the room were less likely to be aware of the privilege they were born into. All they can see is 10 feet between them and their goal.â
âYour job â as students who are receiving an education â is to be aware of your privilege. And use this particular privilege called "educationâ to do your best to achieve great things, all the while advocating for those in the rows behind you.â
There were people who went to sleep last night, poor and rich and white and black, but they will never wake again. And those dead folks would give anything at all for just five minutes of this weather or ten minutes of plowing. So you watch yourself about complaining. What youâre supposed to do when you donât like a thing is change it. If you canât change it, change the way you think about it.

male entitlement in academic spaces is so boring. canât tell you how many times iâve been in a class and a girl gives a short, insightful analysis, and then a dude raises his hand and says âjumping off of thatâŠâ then says literally the same thing she said but longer and worse.
What is a legacy?

I hope your holiday is going well and that it goes well. And I wish you all a Happy New Year. Meaning that I wish for your New Years Eve to be happy. Itâs hard to wish hundreds of thousands of people to have an entire happy year. Thatâs a lot. That feels greedy and hopeless and also some of you might not deserve a happy year. Everyone deserves a happy moment or day now and again but a whole happy year I would wish on maybe eight people and four of them are terminally ill children. Also please remember that the turning over of one year to another is a mental construct that bears no more weight than the things that keep us apart and in competitive categories as human beings. Time is not moving. Youâre not losing or gaining ground. Youâre not separate from âthemâ anymore than youâre separate from your own umbrella. Itâs now, weâre us and this is here. If youâre in pain, this too shall pass. If youâre in luxury, this too shall pass. Ask an old lady how sheâs doing. The internet is not real. Draw a picture on a napkin. Love to all of you.

Do you know who Marcel Proust is?
French writer. Total loser. Never had a real job. Unrequited love affairs. Gay. Spent 20 years writing a book almost no one reads.
But heâs also probably the greatest writer since Shakespeare.
Anyway, he gets down to the end of his life and he looks back and decides that all those years he suffered; those were the best years of his life âcause they made him who he was.
All those years he was happy? You know, total waste. Didnât learn a thing. So, if you sleep until youâre 18, think of the suffering youâre gonna miss. I mean, high school? Those are your prime suffering years.
You donât get better suffering than that.
Itâs dark because you are trying too hard. Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly. Yes, feel lightly even though youâre feeling deeply. Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them. I was so preposterously serious in those days. Lightly, lightly â itâs the best advice ever given meâŠto throw away your baggage and go forward. There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet, trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair. Thatâs why you must walk so lightly. Lightly my darlingâŠ
