the oceans never been a friend to him, more like someone he longs to meet. calem lives seasick — land-locked with a penchant for everywhere except where he’s already been. he’s traveled over plains and mountain ranges, an ocean in competition with the sky; which is bluest? endless? what’s on the other side of the horizon? how far do these waves go, and will they take him there?
I’ve seen him on the news before, is her first thought. But she cannot place this stranger in her mind, and forgoes the impression entirely. She tilts her head as greetings are exchanged, her lips parting into a small “o” shape as he speaks in his native tongue. He is alien to her but she gives him a smile as warm as any other smile that she would give her more closer friends.
Friends. Already she considers him a friend.
“This?” It takes Selene a few seconds to realize that he is referring to her Rotom Dex. “This is my Pokedex.”
Upon hearing its moniker, the Rotom Dex frees itself from her bag. It hovers close to Selene’s person before taking note of Calem and his appearance. The possessed machine says nothing until it reaches the same conclusion as its Trainer:
“Bzzt! Nice to meet’cha! I’d shake your hand, if I had a body!”
Selene chuckles.
“I call him Dex.” She explains. “He functions as a Pokedex, a camera, and a guide. By being in the Pokedex, he can talk to me, and I can talk to him. Rotom Pokedexes are only in Alola, and I don’t think they’re really common in Alola just yet… umm, and he isn’t really used for battle. But he’s very friendly and very helpful, I think I would have been lost in Kalos without him.”
A pause.
“I’m Selene, by the way. It’s really nice to meet you!”
Even from the summit of Lanakila, Selene could see it – an unholy tear in the universe, as rigid and unnatural as its origin. The tear warped reality; she swears that as it unfolded, it had robbed Alola’s light. The clouds across the region had darkened and grown heavy. Energy had surged forth from the wormhole. The air had felt electric then. It still feels electric. She still feels the need to vomit.
Selene leaps from the back of her Charizard. Her feet find solid ground below, the man-made earth of the Aether Foundation. She draws a deep breath before heading inside.
They had been expecting her. He had been expecting her – she had called prior to her arrival. What had caused another wormhole to open had been a complete mystery to her. The moment it had opened, however, she had taken Nebby to seal it up. The patching was done with ease, but damage had been done. Before Selene had reached the wormhole, several Ultra Beasts had spilled into their reality. Many more than those years ago – more beyond her capability to capture. Even with the International Police agents deployed, the number of Beasts was just too great –
So, she had come to one person who had experience with these types of creatures before. Gladion – the moment his name creeps into her thoughts does she feel a sense of guilt enter her system. Her duties as a Champion had kept her busy. It had been months since her last encounter with him. She had promised to many of her friends (Gladion included, naturally) that she would not allow their relationships to fall into disarray simply because of her new title. Selene, when making that promise, had been blissfully unaware of the duties she would hold as Champion then.
She shakes her head. No; she is certain that however awkward, Gladion will lend his assistance. He has to – this problem involves him, as well. He is a friend, she tells herself.
And the moment she walks through the entrance does she see him. Selene runs to him with open arms –
Even in a serious situation, Selene cannot forego her more affectionate tendencies.
Kalos was far different from Alola in many instances, but the first Selene is bitterly aware of is the weather –
While still warm (mild, she’d later describe it as), Kalos held none of the warmth that the beaches in Alola did. But by no means does she dislike the region because of the differences; in fact, that is the reason she is here.
Being Champion, her duty was bound to Alola. The league had been built three years ago and thus had been met with an onslaught of challengers. The flow had eased since the first year (thankfully), but every other day, she had been called to defeat another. It was a matter of running through the motions. And as much as Selene loved her position, it grew dull.
Vacation had been overdue. And here she was, for one entire week, to enjoy the sights of Kalos.
Ambrette Town is her second stop.
The moment she hears about the beach, she negates the museums and shops.
Her smile is wide, her eyes are sparkling. She runs, and with every step she hears the subtle rattling of all the shells in her bag. Her collection is growing, and will continue to grow. Selene pauses to obtain another, a smooth number buried deep within the sand.
The sunlight catches on the surface of the shell. A myriad of colors dazzle Selene’s vision. She pockets it –
She tries to piece the thoughts together but they are mere fragments; shards from a whole piece that no longer fit together so easily.
It is raining. The rain soaks her clothes, her hat, her hair. The winds that blow by every few minutes rob her of precious body heat. She is sent into an uncontrollable shiver.
Selene begins the recount.
She was up high, and so she had fallen. From what or where, she did not know, only that it had been from somewhere dark. The rest had been a mystery; thinking on it for too long ached.
She didn’t even know where she was.
Her skin was littered with cuts and scrapes, which were beginning to sting in the rain. She tries not to complain, merely trying to think of the positives. Landing in that thicket had saved her life, this she had no doubt. Scratches were a small price to play for a life. The thought makes her smile briefly, until she takes a misstep and her ankle slides forward in the mud.
“H-Heck it!”
No tears! Selene clutches her ankle, hissing. She must pause in her stride to take in the extremity of this new injury. She draws a deep breath, and touches her foot down on the ground gingerly. Pain shoots up her leg and she winces again. She tries another step, softer, and finds the pain somewhat muted. A sigh of relief – another positive! – before another thought hits her.
Shelter.
The rain clouds her vision, but as if some deity has heard her prayers, she gazes down at her feet and discovers a road, paved. Where there are roads, there is civilization – the thought fills her with a warm hope and she begins her forward limp.
Her efforts are rewarded when she sees lights. She draws closer, and is able to make out the shape of a building. Her heart skips a beat and she trudges along at a faster pace, not caring when her ankle begins to throb. Without hesitation, she knocks.
The door opens. Her heart skips a beat.
Shelter!
She bows, hurriedly.
“I’m sorry to have bothered you at such a bad time… please, allow me to stay here until the rain passes!!”
Alola is cloudless today, and so it bears the weight of the sun today. But the spray of the ocean keeps Selene cool and collected; she gazes at the endless sapphire waves as they tide at her feet. Sunlight, harsh, obstructs her vision. She cups her hands together in a makeshift telescope and stares at the horizon.
The boat hadn’t been there moments ago. She tries to contain her excitement but alas fails; she’s already flapping her limbs and smiling like a fool.
Champion of Alola. Part time Pyukumuku chucker. Ultra Beast catcher. And now, tourist guide.
Selene would certainly have enough jobs on her resume to impress anybody.
She withdraws herself from the sand, rushing to the docks barefooted. The hot cement stings the bottoms of her feet but she cares not, thinking only of the guest she has to show around Melemele. The shade of the port provides some relief, thankfully. Her energetic expression attracts some off-handed gazes, but perhaps that is because she is the Champion –
Selene fiddles with her hat and pays no mind to the gazes, her dark eyes shining bright.
Within ten minutes’ time, the boat pulls into the docks. She watches the passengers as they begin to disembark, looking for the key features of her guest.
Tall… dark hair… pale… bookish …
And sure enough, her keen eyes fall upon her client (victim) in question. Without warning, she seizes his hands and greets him with the widest smile. She pulls back and spreads her hands, piping a very warm “Alola!”
“I’m Selene Guevera. I’ll be your guide, and I’m very meased to pleet you!” She pauses, smile dropping, as she realizes her greeting in error. “Sorry, pleased to meet you. I’m sorry, I’m just really excited to meet a new face, and I –“
Another pause, as she takes in his appearance.
“… You don’t plan to wear that the entire trip, do you?”
