bio
Maia's parents were an American NSA agent and an Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), and while her father was rarely around, her mother, Elizabeth, was her best friend. She grew up in Melbourne with her grandmother and grandfather, a wealthy family that were retired members of Australian spy agencies.
While her mother visited her regularly, Maia was stuck her grandparents, where she was taught to be a refined woman. She took etiquette classes and learned how to ballroom dance. She loved dressing up in ballgowns and when she was given the change to wear her grandmother’s expensive jewelry, she took it without question.
She wanted for nothing growing up, which has severely impacted her view of the world and of herself.
Her mother had gone to a spy prep school when she was a teenager, and Maia had requested that if she were to go to one, she didn’t want to stay in Australia. She wanted to travel the world, see what other countries could offer, but with her own eyes and not within the confines of the many walls of her grandparents’ household.
Her mother sent her to a family member in England, where she spent most of her teenage years at a prep school there, learning the ways of espionage at a school that both her mother and her grandparents deemed worthy.
The time away from her grandparents and Elizabeth allowed her to develop into herself and to form her own opinions.
When she got the invitation to go to Gallagher, she had been ecstatic. Her grandmother had disagreed with the decision, but Maia had decided that she wouldn’t allow her family to run her life anymore, and it was then that she decided she was going to take her life in her own hands. It has caused some tension, but Maia keeps regular contact with her mother.
Since moving to the United States, she has had some contact with her father as well. She is wary to let him in given the absence he had while she was growing up, but she finds that, more and more, she questions whether that was his choice or the family that she was born into’s.
personality
Maia is extroverted and thrives on human contact. While she tries her best to get along with everyone, some find that she is a little “too much” for them and tend to keep their distance.
She gets jealous quickly, which is an effect of growing up and getting whatever she wanted. When she is denied that, she gets angry.
Maia likes to party. She will never turn down a drink and loves to dance.
While she has found her own opinions since leaving her grandparents household, she finds that she keeps her thoughts to herself most of the time, a side effect of not wanting to anger those around her.
Growing up, she didn’t have many friends, so she made up for it by having a large group of friends and acquaintances in primary school. There wasn’t a student at her school in England that didn’t know who Maia Curfman was.
Needing to fit in, Maia is adaptable. She is always aware of those around her and how they react to her, and she can shift her personality to fit so that they keep her around. She has a minor fear of abandonment.
misc
Maia was taught to ballroom dance at a young age, and has an array of different types of dance knowledge in her arsenal. She even did ballet for a long while.
Her favorite color is rose pink.
She is a cat person. Her grandparents allowed her to have a cat growing up, and it was a tabby cat named Ginger.
She has more shoes in her closet than any of her shirts, dresses and pants combined. She adores heels and loves wearing them. .
“you caught me there,” landon says with a laugh. anyone would be able to tell that landon’s been drinking, but his reasoning is that it’s a party! “i think i’ll be able to handle that,” he replies, knowing that he isn’t that bad when it comes to dancing, even when he’s drunk. doesn’t think he can say the same about her boyfriend though. “hmm, i’m not even gonna try to convince grey to dance with me. the fact that he’s here and not wearing joggers is enough for me.”
she takes him into her arms and starts moving to the sound of the music, laughing softly under her breath. “we both chose pretty big party poopers,” she teased. but if she was being honest, both grey and rafa could use a little sunshine! and landon and maia provided that. “it’s a good thing they like us so much, or we would never get our ways.” she smirked knowingly. “and we would just have had to do everything for one another instead.”
“of course,” rafa says softly, hand squeezing hers lightly to reassure her. he doesn’t necessarily enjoy or like dancing, but for his girlfriend, he’ll suffer through a few of them. “and i’m just graduating,” he says with a laugh before continuing. “and i’ll be close if you ever need anything.” until he has to travel for his job, but he keeps that part to himself. he can tell that maia’s emotions are high, so he’s just trying his best to make their last event together enjoyable. “but say the word, and we’ll go dance.”
maia sighed, knowing he was right, but that didn’t mean that she wasn’t saddened by the fact he would be gone. “you and kass are leaving,” she pointed out (and she didn’t know it, but so was landon). “if it weren’t for scott, the people i love would all be gone.” she didn’t really think about what she just said, the meaning behind her words. yes, she loved kass, and more importantly, she was in love with rafa, but they’d never talked about it. “and yes, I know you’re not gone gone, but,” she trailed off, looking out toward the dance floor. “i am going to miss you.” she let go of rafa’s hands, suddenly embarrassed by her emotional confessions. she reached up and tucked her hair behind her ears, dropping her hands then and running them over the skirt of her dress. “let’s dance!” she said, trying to move on, quickly.
elisa took maia’s hand, grinning all the way as she abandoned her near empty cup at the nearest table. “you won’t have to, ‘cause i’m definitely gonna say yes!” she giggles as she lets maia lead the way. “you look stunning, by the way. not gonna lie, i was a bit nervous about this theme. like, i had no idea how to tackle it at first.”
“yay!” she squealed in excitement, grinning at the other as she closed her hand over elisa’s and dragged her toward the dance floor. “everyone looks so good!” maia turned her head. “and you did fabulous. definitely understood the assignment,” she teased.
“…no, no dates. but if you get me a glass of what you’re drinking, then i’ll happily be yours for the night!” though, to be fair, skylar wouldn’t mind if she didn’t get any drinks, because maia’s the cutest. “…..right, rafa — is he gonna be pissed i forgot about him for a sec? don’t mind me, i’ve had too much champagne.” the blonde grins, sticking her tongue out at her. “thank you, babes. you look amazing yourself. that guy’s a lucky one.”
“i think i can do that. date or no date,” she agreed, turning slightly to hold a finger up toward a waiter who was carrying around a tray of champagne. she grabbed a flute for both herself and skylar, and handed one to her friend. “i don’t think he’ll be too peeved. unless you plan to make a move on me,” she teased. “though, i’ve never seen him jealous. maybe you should.” maia wiggled her eyebrows teasingly, smiling at the other in amusement.
“ you don’t need to do that, ” he laughs, pointing at her eyes. he wishes he’d recorded all of that. “ but actually it’s kinda funny, so i’m gonna think about my answer. what more do you have up your sleeve? ”
maia dropped her hands and rolled her eyes, giving him an exasperated look. “scott,” she whined, elongating his name for a few seconds. “think about how annoying i can become. that should deter you from saying no.” she huffed. “plus, rafa has broken ribs. he can’t dance without pain, so you have to make up for it.”
“Did you check closer to the windows or the little outside places?” Quieter, away from the action. Where she’d expect him to be, but she hoped he was having more fun than that. “Unless Scott found him, then all bets are off.” The blonde nodded, “Maybe when the music slows down.” And when she’d have a clear beeline to the bar. “No, oh… No, that’s not really my thing.”
she pointed at her for a long moment, nodding her head. “you’re smart,” she tells her, because she hadn’t thought about that. she would have to go there next. dropping her hand, she rolled her eyes and laughed. “who knows what trouble scott could get them into,” she teased. looking over at her, she raised her eyebrows. “that’s fair,” she replied, nodding once more. “it’s not for everyone.” she herself loved rafael too much to tell her that she would rather be dateless.
“not to be that guy,” landon says, an almost lazy smile across his features. right now he’s at a happy tipsy, but he knows the shots he’s been doing with his friends are going to catch up to him soon enough. “but i might step on your toes a little bit. i’m a little under the influence.” definitely more than a little.
“i know you’re more than a little,” she pointed out, giving him a look that said she knew him better than that. it didn’t stop her from smiling anyway and continuing to drag him toward the dance floor. “just make sure you don’t break any of my toes and you’ll be fine. i am convinced i can persuade my boyfriend to the dance floor at least once tonight.” she turned toward him and pulled him close, placing a hand in his and one on his shoulder.
“Beg? You shouldn’t have to beg! He should immediately say yes, you know. Just give him your best puppy eyes.” She laughs. “If I can convince Caden, then you can surely convince Rafa. We have great convincing skills.” Or maybe Caden will, since he’s so used to Noah trying to convince him, though most of the time she really doesn’t have to, he says yes to whatever she wants! She grins. “I was just with him actually, but we’re mingling a bit with others. I need to find him for a dance. It’s not everyday you get to dance live to Beyonce.”
“okay, beg is a bit of an exaggeration,” she confessed, laughing at herself. “he usually does what i ask with little urging. but if it’s something he normally doesn’t like? it takes some nudging.” nodding her head, she smiled back at noah, a wide grin that stretched over the entirety of her face. despite all her friends that were leaving, she found herself smiling nonstop tonight. “before you go that, let’s dance together instead,” she urged. “the boys can be without us for a little while longer, don’t you think?”
“ ENJOY YOUR LAST YEAR AT GALLAGHER THOUGH, or at least try, ” she tells her seriously, blinking up at her friend. “ it’d be easy to spend every weekend in dc, but you only get one fourth year, you know ? rafa and i won’t be going anywhere. ” still, kass can’t imagine having to do long distance. “ you’re totally leadership material, please ! they’ll probably do co-heads again, so you should definitely run. ” kass loves everyone in the club, but she’d feel better knowing the leadership roles were going to someone she trusts. squeezing her hand, she laughs. “ i feel like ALL i’ve done tonight is gushing, but you’re right. let’s dance. ”
“yes, mom,” she teased, rolling her eyes with the same playful smile on her face. she knew that she only meant well, but maia knew that it was going to be hard without her best friends next year. “you are going somewhere though,” she pointed out. licking her lips, she looked away, hiding the blush to her cheeks. she liked compliments, but sometimes they got to be too much for her. “i’ll take it into consideration.” she grabbed kass’ hand and tugged her toward the dance floor, grinning all the way. “I can’t believe we got beyonce!” she exclaimed. “it’s literally like a dream.”
Ria recognized the other from their classes, given the shared major. The blonde noticed the smile and gave a half one back. Not much of a friendly person herself, she was in a better mood due to the heavily flowing liquor. “Well… Yes, but it was like…” God, could she tell time at this point? “A while ago. He was getting a drink. Tell me about it though, men are the worst.”
maia hummed in acknowledgement, nodding her head in understanding. her eyes moved across the room, trying to place rafa despite having absolutely no idea where he went. “he promised me a dance,” she told her, rolling her eyes. “which i’m sure he’s eager to get out of. he’s not much of a dancer.” she smiled at the other and gestured. “did you come with someone?” she asked.
“And I’m obsessed with you!” She reaches forward to press a kiss to the brunette’s cheek. Maia’s looking as beautiful as always, and Noah’s in high spirits, partially thanks to the alcohol and partially thanks to the fact that the year’s finally over. “Oh we totally could. They can’t say no to us. They might whine a bit, but they’ll do it.”
maia returned the kiss, planting one on the other’s opposite cheek with a smile. “i already had to all but beg rafa to promise to dance with me,” she told her, rolling her eyes playfully. “but i think i’ll be able to convince him for one picture. i can be very persuasive.” she wiggled her eyebrows teasingly. “i’m surprised caden isn’t attached at your hip, with how beautiful you look!” she noted, stepping back to admire her again.
“ THEN STOP HUGGING ME, ” she laughs shakily, resting her head on maia’s shoulder as she tries to control herself. of course she only hugs her tighter, because their hugs suddenly feel numbered, even if rationally kass knows this isn’t a real goodbye. “ i’m sorry, ” she smiles sheepishly when maia cups her face, blinking so she doesn’t actually start to cry. the other girl is right when she says that they shouldn’t ruin their makeup. “ thank you. i don’t know what i’m gonna do without you in dc, but at least i know it won’t be long. you should run to be a lead of the ppc, they could use your eye. ” god, kass is even going to miss being in the ppc. “ stop. ” she has to look away, another laugh to try to will away tears. “ you’re killing me. i love you too, of course. ”
“you say that as if i won’t be in dc any chance i get,” she chastised, laughing softly. it was where her best friend and boyfriend would be living, after all. she didn’t know what she was going to do if she had to go more than a few weeks without either of them. “leading?” she asked, scoffing. “i’m not too much of a leader. but maybe i’ll be the co-president or something.” she smiled at her friend adoringly. “i’m sorry. i’m sorry. no more gushing tonight, i promise.” she released one of kass’ hands but kept hold of the other. “do you want to dance?” she asked.
rafa leans down, pressing a soft kiss against her forehead. he knew going into this maia would worry about him, but he’s been better in the weeks since his mission. “i’m doing fine, babe,” he shakes his head. “it hurts a little bit if i do too much, but it’s not like i’m the biggest fan of dancing so i’ll be okay.” plus, it’s his last dance as a student, and as much as he complains, it’s not like he actually dislikes it.
maia pressed herself up to her toes to meet his lips halfway, her eyes closing slightly as she felt the kiss on her forehead. it immediately relaxed her, and she let out a gentle sigh as she looked back up to him. “okay,” she said, nodding her head, believing what he was saying. “but you’re going to have to dance with me. at least once.” she paused, a realization hitting her and she had to force herself not to get overly emotional. “it’s your last gallagher event before you leave me.” she could help the pout that slipped on her face. “so dancing is a requirement.”
“ NO REALLY, I’M OKAY, ” she sniffs, taking a tissue out of her purse and lightly dabbing her eye. her nearly month-long hunt for the perfect waterproof mascara will finally be tested tonight and tomorrow, but kass had expected it, going into the evening. “ they’re happy tears, really. i’m just… really going to miss this place. and everyone looks so beautiful, ” her voice cracks, the drama queen. “ have you tried the cupcakes ? i made them myself. ” @gallagherstart
“kass,” maia said, pouting as she came up and wrapped her arms around her best friend, hugging her tightly. “if you don’t stop crying, i’m going to start crying. and while i support your emotions, i don’t want to ruin my makeup!” she teased, pulling back. she brought her hands up to cup her face. “everything is awesome, and it’s mostly thanks to you. it won’t be the same without you.” she sighed, dropping her hands and grabbing the other’s in her own. “you know i love you, right?”
“there’s my man,” maia said, grinning as she moved around one of her classmates and found herself in front of rafa. she reached up, fixing the jacket of his suit and moving it so it laid flat over his abdomen. her fingers moved to lay just above his waistband, and she looked over him to try and gauge how he was feeling. “are you having fun? if you’re in too much pain, we can leave at any time.” she knew that these events weren’t his favorite, and with the broken rib still healing, she didn’t want to push him. // @gldensvns
