The Legend of the Martenitsa
One of the most popular legends connects the Martenitsa with Khan Asparuh, the founder of the Bulgarian state. According to the story, when Asparuh crossed the Danube and established Bulgaria, he sent a message to his sister that his people had found a new home. She tied a white thread to a dove and sent it to him — a sign of peace and hope. On its way, the dove was wounded, and the white thread was stained with blood. This created the combination of white and red .
White - Peace and purity
Red - Life, strength, and sacrifice
Since then, Bulgarians have worn the Martenitsa for health, protection, and good luck.
Честита Баба Марта !!
Baba Marta
On March 1st, Bulgarians celebrate one of their most beautiful traditions — Baba Marta, a symbol of spring, renewal, health, and good fortune. In folklore, Baba Marta (Grandmother March) represents the unpredictable nature of early spring - sometimes warm and sunny, sometimes cold and moody. People believe that if they are kind, cheerful, and smiling, she will bring pleasant weather and positive energy. On this day, people give each other a Martenitsa — a small ornament made of twisted red and white threads.
White symbolizes purity, new beginnings, and long life.
Red represents life, strength, health, and vitality.
An ancient tradition, deeply rooted in Bulgarian culture .
The world doesn’t need more hate. It needs more love, more light, more YOU. ✨❤️
