Guestblogging: Papers, Please (Lucas Pope, 2013)
Congratulations, you have won in the labour lottery, you will now be serving as an immigration officer. Review for Papers, Please:
You might have come across Papers, Please and disregarded it as an advanced Spot-the-Difference sort of game but there is something very satisfying about being an immigration officer and matching passports, people and motives to the ever changing rules to keep your precious Arstotzka (a fictitious country) safe.
If you’ve not heard of this little gem of a game please see the pictures and marvel at it’s ‘Soviet’, mainly pixel art chic.
It’s not a surprise it was voted onto Greenlight within days, just based on the graphics, IMHO.
There is a story mode as well as an on-going mode where rules change. The game plays on your moral judgement between that of the people coming to your desk who are looking for a better life and keeping your family and job prospects alive. This pulls you into the game and makes you care about your actions. Sadly, the game can feel very repetitive if you need to replay to try and access alternative endings (spot who failed first time).
If you are a lets-play fan, I can can recommend this one from WeasleZone on YouTube:
Do you have any recommendations for a pixel art game to cover? Something you would like to see get more exposure or a treasured classic that needs new air? I was reminded about Papers Please while watching my friends play Uncharted 4 that references Arstotzka (or something very similar but it still jogged a memory of it). The library isn’t just a happy place (though it is definitely a happy place). The library is also a center for the free exchange of information, which is vital to our democracy. The library assists us beyond getting us copies of our favorite books; libraries contain job centers, meeting spaces, assisting with taxes or voter registration, homework help, and access to technology for people who might not have any. Libraries are known to create economic value by increasing literacy in populations, helping people apply for jobs, and providing research materials for small businesses.
In the coming weeks, months, and years, we will need to ensure that our libraries get the support that they need if and when politicians suggest that libraries be de-funded (which seems likely in a political climate that abhors information). Here are ways that you can start supporting your local library right now.
