Aaand with that, Zoroark was demanding more attention.

“… Yes, he… likes to, um… do that,” he sighed, taking a seat to her right. Clearly his Pokemon wasn’t going to be leaving any time soon, so he should keep an eye on him. “I don’t understand how he’s so comfortable just walking up to people and…”

He trailed off, and shook his head. “… They’re all in there…? Goodness, I couldn’t even imagine fitting all of my Pokemon friends in one room… How many do you have?”

N held back a comment on how they would obviously all be injured if they were in a Pokemon Center, and questioning why and how that happened. From what he could tell, this was a nice kid, and a kid at that. It’s not like he’d never lost a battle before, and he could talk to Pokemon, so of course any Trainer could simply just… lose a battle. The world isn’t bad. The world isn’t bad…

“Three so far,” Lillie said, wringing her hands together. “I’m afraid they will be disappointed in me. That they won’t trust me. Especially my Butterfree. She did so well but at the last moment...”  Lillie’s voice trailed off.  In these moments she felt so small and alone. That she couldn’t handle being a trainer and travelling the world. That she would always be ugly and useless like her mother had said, but even worse than that. That she would turn into some kind of monster like her mother had.  Tears welled up in her eyes. She didn’t sob. She wouldn’t let herself. All she could do was watch as they dropped down to the white fabric of her skirt.

It squinted and tilted its head as the Pokedex scanned it, making a strange face– like a combination of mild annoyance and eating something that didn’t taste good.

When it’s called cute, however, its ears perked up. The Zoroark stared at Lillie’s hand for a few seconds, then promptly headbutted it, moving his head so that it was less like she was petting him and more like he was petting himself using her hand.

After he became satisfied with the amount of pets, he trotted back over to N, promptly starting to pull him towards Lillie without warning. 

“–?!”

It barked something at him as it shoved him over. He stumbled, but gained his footing fast enough that he didn’t crash into her, coming to a stop about a foot in front of her. A look was shot at his Pokemon after he recovered, but it seemed oblivious.

Sigh.

“… Sorry, he wasn’t bothering you, was he?” he asked, voice quiet. It came at a contrast to the sharp expression he had just had on his face, which quickly softened into concern. “… He has a habit of being a little overzealous. … Particularly physically. Even if you say ‘ow’ or ‘that hurts’ really loudly.” He sounded like he spoke from experience.

Lillie giggled as the Pokemon pet himself with her hand. What a sweetie~. His fur was nice to the touch, and when he trotted away, she was sad for only a moment before he brought his trainer over. The sadness turned into intimidation of the tall person.  He even looked scary for a moment, and she was afraid he would scold her for petting his Pokemon without permission, but relief flooded her when it wasn’t the case.  “Oh, no. I like him a lot, he’s cute. All of my Pokemon are being taken care of right now, you see, and it felt like he was keeping me company.”

”But of course my sweet bean. It’s just been a little busy in Paradise… Heh! Just imagine the irony! Ain’t nothing a little rest and maybe another cup of tea won’t help. After all conserving and researching parallel dimensions doesn’t do itself!”

“How about you hmm? I’ve been so caught up I hardly had time to spend with my little Lillie!”

“I miss you, too, dad. But I’m okay. I get... lonely though. Can’t I go to the main islands more often? Gladion does.”

“How kind of you to care.” Faba sounded honest. “I guess I have no complaints about him… and him only.” 

“Is there something else the matter?” Worry could be heard in her voice. Although she was still a bit wary of Faba, she would have hated for there to be any unnecessary problems.

He still found himself worried inside Pokemon Centers.

Of course, he was never really one for human hospitals, and he suspected that again, his distrust only stemmed from his own fears that weren’t shared by everyone, but what about the ones that were shared?

He closed his eyes, oblivious to the stare boring into his back– none of the Pokemon were calling out in fear, even despite their pain. Good… that’s good, they all feel safe here. This was usually the case, but he was always watchful for when it wasn’t. He’d hate to not be there if a friend was scared.

Of course, he didn’t notice he was being stared at, but the Zoroark at his side certainly did.

The fox Pokemon had been invisible– it generally was, since its mission was to keep N protected, and being out of sight helped immensely with that. You can’t hack through the defenses first if you don’t even know the defenses exist.

It didn’t expect the girl to start attacking N, but that didn’t mean it appreciated her staring at him. Suddenly becoming visible, it wandered towards Lillie, shoving its snout at her to inspect her scent.

Oh!  Lillie knew this one, she knew it... He was... a... a...?  No... she forgot the name... Pulling out the Pokedex Professor Oak gave to her, she held it in front of the fox-like Pokemon.  Oh, right! Zoroark. The Pokedex droned for a minute, giving her a quick summary on the Pokemon, and then she stowed it away in her bag.  “You’re cute,” she said, holding out a hand for it-- she was a little afraid to touch him without permission, despite his sniffing. “Do you belong to the green-haired man?”
