Reminder that even as a death witch who honours and accepts death as a natural thing you're still allowed to grieve
Be aware that this blog may touch on sensitive topics regarding death so read on at your own discretion.
Death Energy
Death energy is just energy that comes from death and death symbolism, but as simple of an answer as that seems to be, don’t be fooled by the much deeper complexities that this topic harbors. When we really dig into it we discover some darker truths about our existence and the hereafter. Truths that many people are more comfortable ignoring because they force us to face the inevitable.
Death energy is about stillness, endings, and about the deconstructing and reconstructing processes. It’s about using what’s passed to fertilize what’s new and grow something that has purpose in the next step of your life. It’s about the acceptance of inevitability and what we can’t change to bring about what we can. All in all it’s a very unique energy that can open many new doors for any witch willing to try.
• What Does Death Energy Feel Like? •
Everyone feels energy differently in the basic of ways but even still, it should go without saying that death energy has a different pull to it entirely then life energy. Sometimes those who aren’t used to connecting with it can have a hard time. It’s been described as heavy, or even smothering by some. Others have said it feels cold or chilling in a way. The funny thing here is that these definitely describe what naturally comes with death. Our bodies get stiff and much heavier. We lose our heat and grow cold, and while this definitely sounds unpleasant and shocking to those who aren’t used to spending time with it we must also recognize that it’s a part of a continued cycle. As our bodies further decay the weight becomes less and the shock of the cold against the once warm skin becomes just another room temperature feeling. Another words, things come to feel more natural especially when you understand the process and spend time with it.
All new energy can feel overwhelming to anyone who hasn’t experienced it before. It can bring up a whole plethora of unease, nervousness, even anxiety if you’re not ready for it. Especially death energy. As stated above, it can force us to face certain things. Things that can be heavy and hard to accept. For this reason working death energy may not be for everyone and that’s okay. It deals with subject matter that makes some people uncomfortable and as such if you’re not ready to incorporate it you have every right not to.
• What Can Death Energy Be Used For? •
Death energy is the primary force in death witchcraft and death magick. And as a result each witch is gonna use it in their own unique way. There are so many interesting books and articles published that describe plethora of interesting ways to work with the energy of death. Many of which put their own unique understanding and spin on how it came to be, how it works, and how you can use it. But in my opinion you can use death energy for everything you can use life energy for and then some. It just pulls the magick from a different place and in a different way. Remember each one of us processes things in a different way, especially death energy. Do what makes you feel comfortable and never let anyone push you to cross any lines you’re not ready for. Comfort in magick is very important.
Lastly I want to take this time to emphasize what death energy is not used for. It is not and never will be an excuse to just take human life. Murdering someone is never okay. Nor is it an excuse to unnecessarily torture animals. Now I understand that using animals in general can be a debatable subject, especially when they are killed by the individual. However it should be understood that many believe this is okay during appropriate times and only when you utilize the animal and not waste it. So as an example hunting during deer season or catching a fish. The animal in question can be used for magick but will also ultimately be eaten and many witches see this as an appropriate practice. As long as everything operates within the confines of the law and everything is treated with respect and dignity.
Cemetery Work
For a lot of death witches, doing work in a cemetery or graveyard is a must, although there are those that don’t, a great deal more either do or will do when they get the chance. Lots goes into this type of work though and a thorough study on the subject should be done before pursuing this type of magick. However, some key points to remember are to always be respectful, obey the laws and rules of your land regarding the resting places, and listen to what the dead tell you.
It’s very important to recognize that there are always going to be practitioners that have their own unique rules on this subject, but the best way to know if the dead favor something or not is to ask them. What rules you inevitably believe should revolve around what the dead are comfortable with. That said, some of these rules are shared amongst practitioners. I have compiled a list below with some of them. Remember, this is very basic and what a practitioner adds or changes is up to them.
💀 Always bring an offering for the gatekeeper.
Typically these are the oldest spirits in the cemetery and are in charge of maintaining order. Most offerings include things like coins, drink, bread, or apples.
💀 State exactly what you’ll be doing and ask permission from the gatekeeper.
It’s important to let the spirits know what your intentions are. Will you be doing magick at the crossroads, magick at a grave, or foraging? The gatekeeper should let you know through energy what is acceptable. Remember each Cemetery is different and has different rules over all.
💀 Never take things directly from a grave.
Gifts on a grave belong to the spirit dwelling there. It’s okay to pick up things like trash, or moldy flowers in still water but, rocks, dried or fresh flowers, feathers, etc should be left alone.
💀 Be respectful of the graves and spirits.
Try not to walk near the headstone of a grave (you’re walking on their body. Try to stay near the feet and always say excuse me politely if you have to step on it), always ask for a spirits help never demand it, and always bring them an offering as a thank you.
💀 When foraging never take what a spirit tells you not to.
If you’re gathering dirt, sticks, or plants from a cemetery, even if it’s not on a grave, and you get a feeling like you shouldn’t touch it, then don’t. Spirits will always let you know what they want to keep. Obey that or it’s theft.
💀Always give thanks for hospitality before you leave.
Being polite and thanking your hosts is always a must in general and can bring good energies between you and the dead. Especially if you intend on going back to work at that Cemetery.
Necromancy
Another common staple amongst death workers and arguably one of the most misunderstood practices. Simply put, this practice is divination with the dead. It’s all about connecting to and asking the dead for answers from the beyond. Lots of that used to be done in the cemetery and as a result many wild and fantastic rumors about zombie creation were formed, but that’s far from the truth. There were indeed many radical understandings within the practices history however, but as science matured so did the knowledge on what this practice actually was.
While necromancy is still done in cemeteries even today, it’s not a must. Calling fourth a spirit can be done a number of ways and will definitely alter and change based on the witch. Some working maybe more cultural than others, and some may be more complex. The uniqueness of these practices can number well into the double digits and is always interesting to learn. Some of the most common spirit summoning techniques (aside from going directly to someone’s grave) are the spirit board, a mirror, and the pendulum. As for how these spirits are called, that too can differ from witch to witch. Most often though, it can involve candles or crystals as an energy source, a personal item or favored item like food, and/or the spirits name. It can be as simple as physically calling out to the abyss, beckoning the spirit forward or as elaborate a ritual as calling in the four directional guardians or a guide to lead them to you.
Regardless of how it’s done, it’s always a good rule of thumb to be respectful to them. Don’t demand from them, ask instead, and offer gratitude and an offering when you end the session.
Deity & Spirit Guides
Lots of death workers may worship deity just like any other practitioner. However the deity they are generally more drawn to are often either associated with the underworld, or a psychopomp, like Osiris, Hades, Anubis, or Hecate. However they may also be a deity tied in some way to the personification of death, much like Thanatos, or the grim reaper.
Even if the witch chooses not to utilize deity they can still conjure up spiritual guides of some sort. These guides can be something as common as ancestral spirits or even animal spirits. Most common animal guides often have some death association and symbolism to them. So animals like Black cats, bats, vultures, owls, crows and ravens are quite popular.
Bones & Body Parts
Its not uncommon to see bones on the altars of death witches. Many beliefs around these tools and what they represent circulate within the community. For some specific animal bones it’s believed you can use that animal spirit and energy. Other beliefs revolve not around the animal itself but rather the type of bone, as each one has its own unique symbolism attached to it, such as a jaw being connected to communication. The possibilities are near limitless and for most death practitioners they are a very necessary tool within the craft. Some practitioners even collect additional things like insect exoskeletons, animal skins, and preserved body parts like a rabbits foot.
DISCLAIMER! People should be made aware that it’s always encouraged for all materials to be ethnically sourced. Any form of unlawful collection or cruelty is frowned upon and not condoned within the community.
Conclusion
As started above, these are just some of the basics of death work within the pagan community and serves as a starting point to bounce off of. It’s very important to do your own research and come to your own conclusions regarding this craft and always remember to obey your local laws. Death work can be very fulfilling but not when it’s done under illegal circumstances.

Dealing In Death: A Quick Guide To Death Magick
On the surface that might sound kind of scary, even downright evil, but I assure you it’s the farthest thing from. In this blog I will attempt to give you an in-site into the basics of death work. Please know that every witch does things their own unique way, so for the purposes of this work I will be trying to explain things in as unified a fashion as I can. This is intended to essentially be a starting point to bounce off of.

🕯 Connecting with a Deceased Loved One | Mediumship Tarot Spread
Bob was one of my best friends. He was also my ex-boyfriend's best friend. But even after I broke up with my ex, he found some space in his life to remain my friend. I think it's because we had a special connection.
And this is what I want to bring back with this tarot spread: Our special connection I miss so much.
I found this tarot spread on Pinterest. The author is Emerald Lotus.
So, I set up an altar with a candle, some beer, and a cookie. I remember bob loved his English Breakfast Tea with a bit of milk and side cookies, but I didn't have tea here. So I hope he accepts some beer. I think that's what we used to drink when we used to go clubbing both here in Sao Paulo and London.
Oh, and I displayed on the altar these little army toys too. He loved those toys, saying they were collectors' stuff. And he gave a few to me, which I keep to this day.
Alright, so let's do this.
1 - CARD TO REPRESENT THE LOVED ONE WHO HAS PASSED
Knight of Wands: Hmm, that makes total sense. The knight of wands is the bearer of messages from the Spirit. So having him choose this card to represent himself confirms that he's here. Wow, I have goosebumps.
2 - A MESSAGE THIS LOVED ONE WANTS TO GIVE ME
Death Reversed: He wants to tell me that death is nothing like I could expect. I guess that's why he drew this card reversed. I never thought that death was the end of anything. I even tried to tell him mentally when he was well advanced in his dementia, and I didn't know if he could understand spoken words. But he is saying that there's much more I could ever expect, and I believe him, of course. I'd love to know more. So, maybe he can tell me next time we talk through mediumship!
3 - SOMETHING THIS LOVED ONE THINKS IS IMPORTANT
The Tower: OMG. What do you mean by that, Bob? I think he's telling me my life is going through a breakthrough moment, and I need to hang in there. Or maybe there are more breakthrough moments to come. OK. Could you please help guide me through all that, Bob? I know I can trust you. And I'll make sure I'm listening to you.
4 - HOW THE LOVED ONE IS DOING ON THE OTHER SIDE
Ten of Cups: Yeah! He's doing great. He was a wonderful soul, so I think his purification was pretty mild on the other side. Good to hear that. But why is the card reversed? Perhaps, he's about to reincarnate? Hmm, it could be. Once we passed to the other side, Paramahansa Yogananda said we wouldn't want to return. But we must. So maybe that's what this is about.
5 - HOW THE LOVED ONE WILL COMMUNICATE WITH ME IN THE FUTURE
King of Cups: Bob is saying I should listen to my feelings. How does something make me feel? If it makes me feel good, go for it; if it doesn't, think twice. It will be him communicating. That makes sense because I don't consider myself much of a medium or psychic. I do feel stuff, though. Perhaps he knows that from the other side, and this is how he knows he can communicate with me. I'll keep that in mind. Especially considering that Tower card we've got.
Oh, Bob. I miss you so much. Thanks for showing up! I love you ❤️!
What’s your opinion on Tyr and Fenrir’s relationship?
10/10 best friends 🖤 haha
I mean i dunno about everyone else but if I had a dog from a puppy and raised it and loved it and then one day it bit me ‘cause my friend did something shitty to it I wouldn’t be holding a grudge against my dog lol
and really the same deal goes for Fenrir; Tyr’s the only one that’d spend time with him and isn’t afraid of him, raised him and loved him - if someone doesn’t think Fenrir loves Tyr back and can see that the binding wasn’t something Tyr wanted but neither could he stop it, then i dunno but hard disagree haha
the way I perceive things is that Tyr knows that if Fenrir couldn’t be bound, Odin would try more extreme measures, and that Fenrir understands this as well (but a price still had to be payed for the betrayal and Tyr gladly payed it). But, y'know, that’s just my UPG - if someone else thinks they hate each other then that’s fine; you do you 😊

Spell to Banish Personal Negativity:
Tools Needed:
Bowl of water
Salt
Altar with altar cloth
Athame
The Spell:
We have all from time to time experienced feelings and thoughts that there is a negative force around us. To banish these feelings you will need a bowl of water and some salt. Sprinkle some salt on the altar cloth and, using your finger or your athame, say,
"I bless this salt to make it fit for my rites. Blessed Be."
Now add a little salt to the water and hold the bowl up towards the sky. Visualize your deceased relative or the Goddess being present and say
"I ask the relative/Goddess to let this bowl be the receiver of all my negativity, so that I can cleanse myself and became whole again once more. Blessed Be."
Place the bowl down safely, dip the fingers and thumbs of both hands into the water, and visualize all your negative thoughts and feelings moving through your body, down through your arms and out of your hands into the water. As you do this be aware of yourself becoming lighter, of losing the weight that has been on your mind.
When you are sure that this is completed, remove your hands, shaking the last drops of water from them into the bowl. Take a moment to center yourself once more, and again, holding the bowl up, say,
"I ask the relative/Goddess, to take this negativity through the power of the Elements to keep me safe in their hands. Blessed Be."
Now throw away the contaminated water into the earth, but not near any plants that you are trying to grow, or down the drain.
For Binding:
(Here is all the knowledge I have gathered about binding spells, rituals, etc. I hope it serves you well!)
Cord binding spell
Jar binding spell
Bind from harming themselves/others
Knots for binding: writtensecretsonparchment
Return to Critter’s Grimoire
Who has experience with binding spells? I think it’s time to work one around my MIL due to recent events (which I’ll write about if anyone’s interested, and maybe even if you’re not. 🤣).
Norse Pagan “Holy Water”
Note: This is something I’ve come up with by combining my American folk magic practice with Heathen cosmology and prayer. While some modern Heathen magic is based on spells found in historic sources, that’s not what this is. This is 100% modern and 100% of my own creation.
As someone who practices Southern/Appalachian folk magic but is not Christian, I sometimes have to get creative when replacing the Christian elements in my rituals and spells. Holy water is one of the elements that has had me stumped for a while.
In a Christian context, holy water is water that has been blessed by a priest or other member of the clergy. Holy water is a mainstay in Catholic churches, but it’s made its way into several American magical traditions, even those that are more Protestant-leaning. Holy water has a wide variety of magical uses, from purification to healing to protection from enemies.
This presents a problem for pagan witches, because many of us don’t feel comfortable using Christian elements in our practices. Personally, I feel that using water blessed by someone else is less personal and thus less powerful than using water that I have blessed for myself.
I’ve seen other witches substitute moon water, sun water, crystal water, or just water that has been charged with their positive intentions. I think all of these are great ideas, but I like the idea of using water that has an explicit connection to my religious beliefs and the gods I worship.
I got this idea after we had a thunderstorm followed by a freeze. An empty flower pot had filled with water from the storm, then frozen over. I realized that this water was now connected to some seriously powerful Heathen forces — thunderstorms, which are associated not only with Thor but with Odin and, to a lesser extent, Freyr, and ice, which is one of the two primordial forces in Heathen cosmology. I decided to save some of the water in a jar and add the other Heathen primordial force, fire.
My method for infusing the water with fire energy is based on the process my partner uses to make khernips (Hellenic holy water) in his Religio Romana practice.
This stuff has some powerful vibes, so I thought I’d share for any other Heathens who might want to try!
You will need:
Water collected during a thunderstorm
A way to freeze your water
Matches or a lighter
*optional* Sacred wood of your choice (I used redcedar, which is native to my area and which I find to be strongly cleansing and protective.)
*optional* a very small amount of bleach — ¼ tsp for every gallon of water, or 4 drops per quart.
Collect rainwater during a thunderstorm. If you want, add a tiny bit of bleach to the water to keep it from growing bacteria or algae. (Note: Even if you add bleach, I still don’t recommend ingesting this water.)
Freyr is associated with rain, as well as with sunshine. Thor is, of course, the god of thunder and lightning, but Odin also has associations with thunderstorms through some his kennings: Þundr (“Thunderer,” from Gylfaginning, Hávamál, and others), Viðrir (“Stormer,” from Gylfaginning, Lokasenna, and others), and Hveðrungr (possibly “Weather-maker,” from Óðins nǫfn). You may choose to invoke any or all of these gods in your blessing of the water.
Speaking of blessing, the one I would use is: “I honor the spirits of this water. I honor and thank the spirits of rain and the spirits of thunder who have blessed this water. I honor and praise Thor, Odin, and Freyr, who have touched this water with their power.”
If this blessing doesn’t quite work for you, feel free to use a different one!
Now, you need to freeze your water. Ideally, you could simply leave it outside overnight and let it freeze naturally. If it is too warm to do this, place it in a freezer indoors. Just be careful — remember that water expands when it freezes, and you don’t want to shatter your container!
Once your water has frozen, speak this blessing or a similar one over it: “I honor and thank the spirits of ice who have blessed this water. Ice of Niflheim, primordial power, bless this water.”
Now, thaw out your water. Once the water is room-temperature, it’s time to add the energy of fire. If you are using sacred wood, set the tip of the wood on fire, then quickly douse the flame by dipping it in the water. If not using sacred wood, simply light a match and then douse it in the water.
Follow this up with this blessing or a similar one: “I honor and thank the spirits of fire who have blessed this water. Fire of Múspellheim, primordial power, bless this water.”
You now have water that has been blessed by the storm gods and by the two primordial elements. You can use this water in the same ways Christian witches use Christian holy water. I find it especially useful for purifying a person, object, or space.
“Don’t Procrastinate”
With the new semester started or soon to be starting for some of you, this is probably useful to have, I know it will be for me.
I recommend having this sigil drawn or placed strategically in areas and on objects you believe are linked to you procrastinating on work and projects.
“I Improve In My Art”
Keep this sigil with you when you’re doing and practicing whatever kind of art you do. This can apply to be whatever you consider your art to be, it can be visual art, graphic art, performing art, language arts, martial arts, the list goes on. So don’t assume this is exclusively for drawing or painting.
So I had plans to go to the cemetery to visit with my grandparents this morning, but my father unexpectedly came down from Virginia to trade vehicles with me, so I couldn’t do that. 😞 So I might be trying to go tomorrow. I got one of my grandmother’s favorite snacks to bring as an offering. I have no idea what to bring for my grandfather. Maybe some honey (he was a beekeeper in his later years)?

I made some Migraine oil yesterday day and I have a little extra in an extra clean jar I have under my sacred space.
2 drops lavender essential oil
1 drop peppermint essential oil
1 drop rose water concentration (I would use rose essential oil but its expensive)
2 tablespoons liquid coconut oil
I applied it to my pain areas (back of my skull and temples) as well as over my sinus cavity. I find that it helps best when used in combination of other remedies (I had a chiropractic adjustment earlier, took an anti-inflammatory, used ice, and rest). I have tried doing each of these on their own and tbh it doesn't help as much as using them together. I miss my migraine abortive medicine, but I have no problem being off of it while I am pregnant.
✨Ways to deal with Headaches/Migraines ✨
~As a witch 🌙
As a witch who deals with migraines, I found some ways that help ease the pain.
#1 Rule- take your medication, pain killers or whatever is prescribed to you. Although these alternatives can help they don’t always make the pain go away completely.
✨Hold onto crystals like Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst, Blue Calcite, Jet, Sugilite and Amber to ease tension and discomfort. I believe I heard having a circular piece of copper and placing it on your head helps the pain.
✨Placing peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus or lavender oil (diluted in carrier) on your temples soothes pain.
✨Not super witchy but keep a journal of when your headache occurs and what you ate or did before the attack. I found my migraines usually occur around the full moon, eclipse, equinoxes and solstices. This can help you figure out your triggers and times so you can take the proper precautions.
✨Hot baths or showers with the oils above help relieve tension in the head. I’ve learnt not to put cold cloths but hot compresses on my head during a migraine since it relieves tension. But whatever works for you.
✨If I have a minor migraine where I can still function and not hyper sensitive to light or sound, I get outside and breathe in some fresh air and get away from electronics and loud sounds.
✨Grounding and cleansing can do a great deal of good especially if your headaches are caused by stress, emotional drainage or picking up on other people’s energies.
✨And finally if you work with deities (especially those related to healing) pray to them. They are more than glad to help. Praying can also help take your mind off of the pain.
chronic migraine spell jar ☾
INGREDIENTS:
jar w/cork (size doesn’t matter, it’ll just affect the amount of each ingredient you use)
orange peel
lemon peel
cinnamon stick(s)
mint leaves
rosemary
tea leaves/ground tea (preferably chamomile or green)
white candle + lighter
STEPS:
layer the bottom of your jar with tea leaves or ground tea. make this layer relatively thick in comparison to your other layers.
on top of the tea, put down a thin layer of rosemary. this should just barely cover the tea.
next, add your mint leaves. i would make this layer on the thicker side as well, because mint is the strongest ingredient in this other than the tea.
next, add in your orange and lemon peels. the ratio of lemon to orange peel should be 1:1
prop your cinnamon sticks up in the jar. don’t overwork the cinnamon; only use however many sticks comfortably fit in your jar. if you do not have cinnamon sticks, you may substitute it for ground cinnamon*
seal your jar using whatever method you prefer. because i did not have a cork for my jar, i sealed it a bit differently than i normally would.
(optional) charge your jar under the moon with a piece of clear quartz.
CORRESPONDENCES:
orange peel: energy, happiness lemon peel: protection cinnamon: healing, extra power mint: migraine/headache relief, potent healing herb rosemary: strength, protection chamomile/green tea: blessings, good health, energy
* if you use ground cinnamon, you should put your cinnamon between the rosemary and mint layers. this is primarily for aesthetic reasons, but do whatever your heart desires!
disclaimer(s): witchcraft is not a substitute for a doctor. if you have chronic migraines, please see a doctor. this is meant only to aid healing. the tea i used is a mix that also contains apple, lemon verbena, and pineapple, among other things.
