“It’s easier to figure that out with a diploma,” Jinx replied. A GED only went so far and it sounded like Ray didn’t even have that. “It’d also be a productive use of your time if you’re struggling to fill your free time,” she added as her fingers played with her damp shirt.
"I guess," he shrugged yet again, shifting his weight and fidgeting. "Oh, I don't even have any free time anymore." Laughing softly, Ray shook his head.
“School isn’t for everyone,” Jinx tried to reassure him. Education was the right path for her, but she knew everyone was different. “With the tutors here you could receive a diploma before your release.”
"Yeah, well. I liked school." Ray shrugged, chuckling at her suggestion. "Yeah. Aside from the fact that I'd have no idea what to do, I feel like it'd be a waste of time."
“Somewhat,” she nodded. “Others stand out as well, but the reasons vary. Although the brain is ultimately what I focus on.”
"Yeah, I can imagine." He nodded, brushing a hand through his hair. "Yeah, blimey. Didn't even finish high school."
“Sorry, allow me to elaborate,” Jinx replied, noting his uncertainty. “I’m a scientist here in Eichen, but I majored in neurology in college. That’s why I remember your file.”
He nodded slowly, emitting a quiet sigh. "Oh, I see," chuckling, he gestured to his head. "TBI, so I stand out."
Emmy watched him start off for a moment, but then reached out to catch his arm, “How have you been, Ray? I havn’t seen you lately…”
He stiffened as she took a hold of his arm, freeing his arm in a matter of seconds before turning back to face her and slipping his hands into his front pockets. "Uh.. I've been good, I guess. What about you?"
“Just watch where you’re going next time, yeah?”
"Yeah - yeah, I will."
“Ray? S'that short for something or is it just Ray?”
"Nope. It's.. just Ray."
“Ray Jackson, right?” Jinx asked, recalling his file. His had been memorable to her because of his brain injury.
Silent for a moment, he tilted his head to one side, then the other before looking back over to her and lifting a brow. "Uh, yeah. That's me."
“Yeah, well, next time–… Next time just fuckin’ look where you’re goin’…” What had begun as a tremulous- if not slightly panicked -yell died down into a tired mumble, and Frankie brought her hand up to rake five shaky fingers through her sandy tresses. “Sorry, fuckin’–… Sorry.”
Ray waited in silence for her to finish, brows pinched and lips pulled into a tight line. "It's okay, you're okay, really. I'm sorry for frightening you - or, whatever word you want to use."
“Huh,” Freddie noised after a moment, smoothing down his T-shirt, “you apologise a lot.”
"Yeah, well." He sighed softly, fixing his shirt around his waist. "I make a lot of mistakes."
“Thank you,” Jinx said, taking the tissues and dabbing her shirt. “I can go home at lunch and change, it’s not a big deal. I’m Jinx, by he way.”
"I'm Ray, it's, uh, nice to meet you, Jinx." He smiled slightly, shifting his weight and fidgeting where he stood.
“Ah, I understand. I feel like that all the time.”
"Yeah. Me too."
accidents happen || Grey + Ray
Oh. That was what he’d forgotten. Grey gave another quick nod, moving aside and sitting next to Ray. He pulled his notebook out of his pocket, writing to the other, given that he’d once again lost the freedom to speak to pretty much anyone. Sorry about that.
Returning his attention back to Grey only to find the other had moved to sit beside him, Ray sighed softly. "It's alright. It certainly could have been worse, right?" He gave a quiet laugh, propping himself upright on his elbows for a moment, before sitting up properly.
“Siblings, then?” Mireille asked with a little ‘hm’ hooking it’s way on at the end. “Why does it seem like it takes a lot?”
"I don't have any." Shrugging once again, he shifted his weight from one to the other. "Everything seems to take a lot, honestly."
“Your mom?” she inquired lightly. Mireille wondered if why he was here was due to him being in the army, but she decided not to ask. “You’re still young, though. You can still make it a theme.”
"She just kind of goes along with what my dad says, so..." He shrugged lightly, brushing his hair from his face. "Yeah. It seems like it'd take a lot, though. Most of the time I just feel like sleeping."
