Mireille flashed him a look of confusion, nose scrunching up in response to his statement. “Phone calls don’t help with the whole missing thing?”

“I don’t get the zero divided by zero joke. Phone just says zero and I feel like a fuckin’ idiot for trying.”

“Feel like one? I thought you owned and honored that label already.”

“Not too long. About two months. You?”

“Month, I think.”

Liam let out a small chuckle. “Yeah, I guess it is.”

“Don’t you, ahm, think that’s a bit odd that you came all the way here to find me?”

“I missed you too.”

“I can tell,” she said, smiling awkwardly at him. “Enough to, uh, come find me. That seems like a lot of missing.”

“So you missed me?”

“Well, yeah. Of course I did.”

“Uh, I guess a little. But a change of scenery can always be good, I guess,” he replied with a small shrug. “What about you? Do you miss it?”

“Yeah, of course I do. My family’s there and you were there, but, ahm, yeah.. I miss it.”

“You should. It works pretty well a lot of the time… It’s better to keep positive influences in your life and k-kick out the negative ones.”

“It just kinda sucks when the positives become the negatives.”

“Yeah, I’m sure there are. I just haven’t really had time to have a proper look or anything yet.”

Mireille nodded and looked down at the floor, she didn’t know what to do or say to him. Was she supposed to invite him over to her apartment? Although, she didn’t know if Jack (her roommate) would necessarily appreciate her bringing some person he didn’t know over. It would also be weird, this felt all too odd to her that Liam was here in Cadwell. “Do.. Do you miss California?”

“Was I what?” He asked. “Sort of. I’m just staying in a pretty shitty motel until I find a better place.”

Mireille shook her head and began walking out of the room with Liam, her fingers clasped together. “There are a few nice little apartments in town.”

“Lot’s of people aren’t very nice. I like to just concentrate on the ones who are.”

“Mm, sounds like a good tactic. I should pull a little copycat and do the same.”

“Wait,” he said, quickly standing up as she did. “I finished ‘bout half an hour ago, I was just waiting around. Mind if I head out with you?”

“Were you..” she stopped mid sentence and just shook her head. “Yeah, uh, sure. Have you found a place to stay yet?”

“Well- I don’t know. Just something,” he said with a shrug, glancing down at her hand briefly as he placed it on his arm before looking back up at her again.

Mireille nodded and stood up, letting her hand come back to her side. “I’m.. I was getting off shift, so I’m just going to go back to my apartment.”

“O-oh… I’m sorry… To be honest my o-other grandma wasn’t very nice… she used to call me rude things and ignore me at Christmas… then she died when I was eight.”

“That’s not a very nice woman.”

“No, I’m not saying that. I’m saying that if you liked coming back to mine with me that much, there must have been something more there,” he said. “I’m not lying.”

“Like what?” she asked softly. Mireille scooted over to him, hesitantly reaching her hand out and rested it on his arm."If you say so, Liam.."

“Oh it is! It really is… my grandma would always say ‘only time will tell’ and it always did in some way… She was a funny lady but she said a lot of smart things..”

“Oh, wow, lucky for you. Both my grandmothers were frigid, old french cunts.”
