“You’re just trying to teach me all that you know, yeah?” Caroline pointed out with a laugh. “I really appreciate it though. Maybe one of those late nights that you find yourself wandering we can work on a bit of something. Sleep hasn’t come easy lately…uh, so I’m sure I’ll be right there with you.” She explained, waving off her small confession. It wasn’t that big of a deal that she had been staying up late, but her reasons for being up weren’t something that she’d discuss easily or if at all. “Haleigh is a talented woman.” Caro agreed with a fond smile. “That sounds interesting, Eli! Honestly, all of that sounds like a life worth living. The world is your oyster!”

Elijah only grinned with a small nod. “Why keep all that to yourself?” He shrugged lightly. It didn’t make much sense to him. His lips only turned into and small frown when she mentioned she didn’t sleep much lately and although, he wasn’t going to pry, he felt it. “I’m sure if I give you a good dance routine, you’ll be so tired.” He nudged her a little bit. The only time Eli actually felt exhaustion was when his pills started wearing off– that was honesty not a pretty sight. “I’d like to think of it that way!” He laughed a bit, turning more to face the woman and he watched her for a second. “Tell me more about your job! How’d you get started and stuff?”

Haleigh wiped her eyes and laughed at her self for crying. What Elijah said had caught her off guard. She listened as he spoke, her heart swelling with joy and relief. No one had really told her they thought she would be a good mum. Not when she needed to hear it. Haleigh was having so many doubts these last few days, with more than just her abilities as a mum. She was the type to always offer words of encouragement but it seemed that she rarely got any in return. “Thank you..” she said softly, “That means a lot..” She moved from her chair and hugged the boy. She let the moment linger for a few seconds before regaining her composure. “You can’t let the other interns I’m soft, okay?” she said with a smile, pointing a finger at Elijah, “They need to fear me.”

“It’s okay to cry..” He whispered gently, only hopeful that his words weren’t even more upsetting to the woman. “But I didn’t mean to upset you.” Eli then told her, giving her a small smile before watching her for a few seconds. Haleigh was good about giving them all advice and words of encouragement. Atleast, Eli took them as advice and encouragement. “And I mean it, alright? Try not to stress about all this.” He whispered into the hug, the young man giving her a tiny squeeze before she pulled away and he only let out a laugh, before getting up again. “I won’t– our secret, alright?” He raised a brow, holding out his pinky again with a small smile. “Because you’re so scary, Haleigh.” He only laughed a bit more, shaking his head with an amused look.

“I don’t believe for one second.” Haleigh said, a teasing tone to her voice, despite the fact that she wrapped her pinky around his. She eyed him carefully and turned to some of the papers on her desk. “You’re the best, ‘Lijah.” she hummed. As he spoke, Haleigh felt tears in her eyes. “Do you mean that?” she said, motioning for him to sit back down. He could look at the cameras later. “That’s the first time I’ve heard that…” she whispered.

I haven’t had any caffeine! I’m just an energizer bunny.” He grinned, giggle like sounds falling from his lips. Eli liked acting like a child sometimes and especially with Haleigh, he let that trait shine through. He wasn’t afraid with her. As he saw tears spring to her eyes, Eli panicked. He didn’t want to make her cry– that wasn’t his intention what so ever. “I mean it..” He whispered, sitting down in front of her desk like he was moments before. Elijah only laughed a little and chew on his lip. “Everyone probably thinks you already know that.” He told her in hopes of making her feel that. Elijah hadn’t been working for Haleigh long at all and they were just getting to know each other well, but he had grown close to her in the weeks they had worked together. “I, uh… your little person is going to love you so much.” If Eli loved his mother as much as he did, even with the issues that had went on in his childhood, he knew that Haleigh’s child would love her so much more than Eli could ever imagine love to be. “And they’re gonna be lucky with you as their mum. I can tell you that.” His voice was much softer and gentle. He wasn’t loud, he wasn’t hyper anymore. His whole personality and being came to a slow halt.

Caroline was blown away by all of the things that went on around her that she had never even taken note of. “Wow, all of that? Have I been living under a rock or something? I’ve never even noticed how you lot handle everything like that.” She shook her head at her own blind-eyes, curls bouncing lightly as she did so. “Photography is interesting, but I only know enough about it to get by with pictures for my blog.” She explained with a chuckle. “Is this the sort of thing you’re wanting to do once you have your degree?” Caro asked, knowing that his career could take him many different ways as Haleigh’s had in the past.

“Nah, not a rock. We’re very good at staying out of the way. I feel like.. as a photographer, you’re not supposed to be noticed. You’re there to tell a story through pictures. Not to be in the way.” He explained to Caroline with a small nod. “I could teach you some of that too.. dance and photography lessons.” He laughed a bit before shrugging. “I don’t know enough photography and videography enough, I think. Haleigh is, like, the best with all of that.” Elijah explained gently before smiling lightly. He liked talking about this stuff. It made him so happy. “Yea! This.. Stuff on movies. Anything really. Anything that I can do to keep going with it.”

Haleigh rolled her eyes and smiled, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” she said as she sat in her desk chair. She eyed him curiously when she noticed how hyper he was, “How many energy drinks have you had today, kid?” she asked with a laugh. Haleigh was harder on Elijah than the others because she was more than confident in his abilities. She gave him more responsibility because he could handle it. “I know. The stage crew doesn’t know much about the cameras up there but I just want to be sure and I don’t think I can make it up the stairs.” she shrugged. “If that’s their goal, message received. Loud and clear.” she laughed, giving a warm smile.

“Uh huh.” He laughed a bit, the boy playing with the fabric of his shirt as he stood. Naturally, Eli was mainly two things-- fidgety and bouncy. He was always moving and maybe that’s what made him a good photographer. The young man never missed a moment and he was never about to. “Uh, zero actually! I haven’t had coffee either. Swear.” He explained, holding out his pinky as if to reinforce the swear. “I’ll go make sure everything is in order-- don’t worry about it.” The woman had enough stress and with the baby on the way, Eli wanted to make sure that he could help in any possible way he could. Grabbing his camera bag and throwing it over his shoulder, he looked at Haleigh for a few moments. “I know it’s none of my business.. but you’re gonna be a good momma, Hales.”

Caroline chuckled at his sleep comment, remembering her late nights in college with a mix of regret and nostalgia. “You’re quite welcome, love.” She replied with a smile before leaning closer to look at the screen on his camera as he flickered through a few photos he had taken. She smiled brightly as a picture of Liam lounging about on the stage popped up, shaking her head at how his mind was obviously wandering during that rehearsal. “Those are very good, Eli!” She complimented. “I don’t know the specifics of photography but I enjoy looking at them so they can’t be terrible.” Caroline reasoned with a laugh. “Video stuff? Like a show compilation or something?” She asked, genuinely interested in what they were up to. She hadn’t really thought much about the photographers side of the shows apart from how her designs would look through their lenses.

He only watched her face as he flipped through the pictures and only raised a brow when he saw the look on her face when he passed a picture of Liam-- he couldn’t wait for the day he could look at somebody like that and he sighed happily at the small fantasy in his head. “Thank you.” He chuckled some more. Her compliments felt sincerely genuine and that made him feel super happy. “Yea! We record some of the rehearsals and the shows and we edit them into whatever we want. Well, sorta. Haleigh gives us a guideline that we have to follow.. but she gives us alot of freedom.” He explained softly. “We usually record clips that interviews use or like, stuff for marketing.”

“Both.” Haleigh said simply, “Well, you didn’t hear this from me but..the others aren’t that great.” She laughed and returned his nudge. “After you finish your math, I need you to go test the video cameras in the balcony. I think one of the crew members said it was making a weird beeping sound or something.” Haleigh said as she placed a hand on her swollen belly and grumbled. “I feel like I’m pregnant with a rabbit. The kid never stops kicking..” she grumbled.

Elijah grinned widely at her statement. “I knew I was your favorite!” He laughed, the boy happily bouncing on his heels. Hyper was simply an understatement for Eli’s behavior sometimes, but he knew when and where it was appropriate and when it was not. “A weird beeping sound?....it’s a camera. It makes beeping noises.” Eli said with a small chuckle before nodding, the boy throwing his pencil down on the table and getting up as if he’d go in that moment. He needed a break from the homework anyway. “They’re probably just wanting you to know that they’re coming loud and proud.” He grinned. Haleigh just radiated that motherly feeling-- not even his own mother had that strong of a feeling.

Caroline was a bit surprised by the intensity he had when defending her work, but she was coming to realize that she wasn’t going to be able to peg the young man in one meeting as she did with so many. He was showing facets of himself that seemed to be only a scratch on the surface of who he was. She was glad that he seemed to be at terms with his mother’s passing and gave his hand a gentle squeeze before withdrawing it, replacing it in her lap. “It’s awesome that you’re doing everything that you are as well, Eli! Being a student and juggling both an internship and maintaining a talent within a hobby isn’t easy. I’ve been there.” Caroline pointed out. “I was dead on my feet near constantly.” She admitted. “But what’s your latest intern-y assignment?” She asked, gesturing to the camera hanging from his neck.

Laughing a bit, he shrugged. “I don’t sleep, so I feel that.” It definitely wasn’t a lie, but he knew when most people said that, it just meant that they got limited hours of sleep. He didn’t think anyone would ever think he wasn’t actually sleeping. “Thank you though.” He said, giving the girl a bright Elijah style smile. “Haleigh just.. wanted us to go around during the shows and stuff and get what we could.” He turned on his camera and began to show Caroline pictures of rehearsals, the city-- everything you could imagine. “Also, she had us working on, like, video stuff too.”

“It is a rare thing. I count my lucky stars everyday.” Caroline admitted with a smile. She was beginning to catch on a bit as to how the young man next to her worked. Though he came across simply hyper and young at first greeting, when you actually got to talking to him he almost seemed a bit wise beyond his years. “Some people say that I had it handed to me since my mother worked for Syco when I first got my job, but I worked damn hard for it. You would think that people would have realized that now that the lads have switched labels but kept me along.” She shook her head then. For the most part Caroline didn’t mind the papz crazy speculation, but when it came to her work she had to admit that it would sometimes get under her skin. “Oh! My blog is about just about everything! My life, fashion, tips on makeup and hair, walkthroughs of my morning routine, and even sometimes recipes when I feel like baking. It’s a nice outlet for my mind. Keeps me company when things get too quiet.” Caro shared, a bit surprised at how much she was saying about herself to this practical stranger but shrugged it off. She enjoyed Elijah’s company. He had a good vibe to him that put her at ease. Her heart went out to the man when she watched his smile fall from his lips, making him look 5 years older. Her hand flew to her chest once she realized her misstep, genuine sadness overtaking her as she then reached a hand out to rest softly over one of his own. “I’m so sorry, Eli.” She said gently. “It sounds like she was. Mums have that way about them, but every mum is unique. Both of mine are most definitely unique.” Caroline agreed, offering the bit of comfort that she could through her touch and soft-spoken words.

“You’re a true inspiration, Miss Caroline.” He said to the girl, his words truly genuine as he watched her. People like her were the reason he tried so hard to leave his life of violence and poverty behind-- they pushed him to be someone good and he planned on being just that as he was surrounded by more and more wonderful and talented people. “People are just jealous. They don’t want to admit that sometimes, it’s actually hard work that gets you somewhere, not just freakin’ luck or connections or any shit like that.” He felt almost anger as he agreed with her words. It was just hard work and Elijah could tell that Caroline had put in that work with just how passionately she was talking about her job. “Yea? It sounds cool-- it’s awesome that you’re doing all these things.” He smiled, nodding at her before he watched her for a few seconds. Hopefully, she was proud of what she was accomplishing. Elijah was wishing that for her, even if he didn’t know her very well. As she looked sad, his heart began to sink. He didn’t want other people to feel sad-- that was almost his worst nightmare. “No! No, it’s alright.. she’s in a better place.. honestly.” It was then that his lips curled up again as his eyes went to the touch she was providing. “Yea.. yea, she was something.” He laughed a bit. Eli had loved her a lot, despite what had gone on in his life. Although hearing that she not only had one mother, but two, made his heart pang a bit with jealousy. That was stupid. He had no reason to be jealous what so ever and he quickly shook off the thought.

“You’re the first intern I haven’t wanted to strangle, honestly.” Haleigh told him with a laugh. “I don’t know why they make you learn math but they do. It’s pointless. The only math I do in my career is the numbers on the dials of my camera.”

“Should I be honored or scared? Cause I’ve seen you when you get mad at the others and I don’t want that anger towards me.” Elijah told her with a small smile, nudging her lightly. He felt guidance with Haleigh and with that, came comfort. “See! I just want to get the stupid thing over with.”

“If only it was that easy, man. I would be living a less-painful life.”

“It is that easy! You just tell your trainer to chill out on the legs.. tell them to move on to something else... like your arms or something until those hurt and you wanna go back to legs.”

“And he’s only one and a half so you can’t compete with him.”

“My heart hurts now-- I can’t believe my title is being ripped away.”

“I have a feeling that you would definitely think so.” Caroline observed, noticing his seemingly limitless energy though she couldn’t help but notice the light shadows beneath his eyes. “I’ve been working with them for what’s edging on 6 years now.” She paused then having thrown herself off a bit. “Wow, I didn’t even realize. I’ve loved every moment of it. Time flies.” Caro shook her head before getting back into the conversation and out of her own mind once more. “That I can relate with.” She told him, nodding a bit. “I design because it’s the air in my lungs, but I adore running my blog on the side.” Her smile lost a bit of its shine at his words of wisdom as she took in what he was saying, it became softer somehow. “You’re mother is a very bright woman.” Caroline informed him.

“I’ll properly meet them one of these days, I’m sure-- I’m always running around for Haleigh, so.” He told her, the smile on his lips still wide as can be. He lost track for how long he had been up now. Thirty hours? Maybe more? He wasn’t feeling tired, in fact, he felt great. “....six years? Woah.” Eli grinned. That was amazing with him. She had a job that she loved-- he wanted that. Honestly, Caroline was becoming inspiration for him now. “That’s good that you’ve found a job you love. Not many people can say that, yanno?” He commented, although it was more for himself. You could see the amazement in his features.  “What’s your blog about?” Elijah was curious and he wanted her to keep talking about what she loved. It was at her last statement that his smile, which had been so bright for minutes now, finally faltered. It still stung like it was fresh even though the event happened a little over a year ago now. “She was, yea-- super wise. She always knew what to say.. but I suppose all mothers do.”
