My Top Ten Skullgirls Characters
Before I begin I'd like to say 2 things. First, I'm not counting Eliza or Beowulf at all because they're not done yet. I like to play through a story mode before and get used to a character before judging. Second... I'm sorry, but I don't like Ms. Fortune. I don't know why, she seems like an interesting enough character, but I just don't like her. Das why she ain't on dis list, yo.
Oh yeah, feel free to read the character name sin the announcer's voice. I know I did. XD
#10: Cerebella! "Can't turn down a fan!"
Now I take in to account 2 things in this list: character design (Personality, story, and appearance) and playstyle. On the character design aspect, all the characters are pretty well fleshed-out (I maintain my dislike of Ms. Fortune in this statement), but in playstyle. Holy geez.
Now I'm not calling Cerebella too hard or too complicated. Anyone can learn to play any character and calling her to hard to play would not be valid on my part. However, I personally found her the HARDEST character on the roster to use even remotely effectively. Don't get me wrong, she's a heavy hitter and a good fighter, but I just couldn't get used to her. That's why she lands solidly at the number ten spot.
#9: Velentine! "Time to operate!"
Valentine is... one of the few characters that I legitimately dislike. Her and Double. Not really likeable characters. But it's her sheer dislikability that actually makes her a likeable character, ironically enough. I like disliking her.
I won't spoil it for anyone interested in the game (best fighting game ever btw totes worth it) but needless to say, she's kind of a slimeball and not someone you'd want to meet in a dark alley. In terms of her playstyle, however, she really shines. My brother took an immediate shine to her ability to dash through opponents, put them in body bags, and poison them in various ways. She's one of the few characters that truly requires forethought to play properly.
#8: Double! "Your sins have NO absolution!"
A twisted defiling demon that scares little children and haunts the rafters. Double is the only character that truly scared me when I first got the game. An agent of darkness, she's a horror in the vein of lovecraft.
And what a backstory. Again, no spoilers, but wow. Just... wow. As for playstyle... She's very fun to play and has unique movesets in her own right. Everything feels fluid and she packs quite a punch. However, she feels mildly generic in that she's the standard "that one character that fuses all the other characters" present in all fighting games. No, I don't hold that against her. In fact, she does it better than ANY other fighting game I've ever seen, adding unique moves and animations while still retaining the feel of being a shapeshifter.
#7: Parasoul! "Egrets, get ready!"
I can do that, but I don't wanna.
Meet Parasoul! Princess of a royal family and a mob boss and... okay, so her character confuses me a little, but in a positive way! A businesswoman who focuses on the job and uses her resources efficiently! An army of loyalist soldiers ready to throw themselves in front of a bullet for her!
*Ahem* So her concept is pretty good. Check. Now for playstyle... Wtf am I supposed to do? I repeat: saying any character is too hard would be unfair and a personal problem. And really I'm not TOO bad with Parasoul (Okay yes I am your point?) but it's using her RIGHT that gets me. She seems, to me, unusually slow, if that makes sense. But her moveset and usage of her army in-game puts her at the #7 spot.
#6: Fu- Fukua! "Here we come!"
Talk about being full of yourself!
...Get it? Full of yourself? Because she's 2 souls... and has two personalities... and she's a clone... no?
Anyway, Fukua's on the number 6 spot because as far as joke april fools characters go, she's one of the best. I've heard stories about Fukua being buggy, but I haven't run into any problems with her yet. She was a joke "new character" designed to be a palette swapped clone of Filia and is currently a non-canon character.
What makes her great is not only her distinct personality and unique moveset, but the fact that she's just a satire. I honestly can't explain why I like Fukua so much. I just kinda do.
#5: Squigly! "Ready? Tally ho!"
I think the number of f***s Squigly gives in clearly evident in this gif.
A zombie opera singer. Honestly, 'nuff said.
Despite being a DLC character *punches through wall* Squigly is has an interesting and unique playstyle. ...That's about it for Squigly. I don't have her as the DLC so I can't play through her story. :(
I'd like to see somebody, ANYBODY, tell me that Peacock isn't an amazing character. Anyone. I dare them. No? I didn't think so.
Harkening back to when cartoons where in black and white and EVERYTHING had a face and danced to bad piano music, Peacock was designed with ONE goal in mind: to kill the Skullgirl. And she's surprisingly effective at it.
In my experiance, Peacock is the pinnacle of "A second to learn, a lifetime to master." The only character packing a huge arsenal of ranged and delay moves, a skilled Peacock player and stand at one end of the field and just hurl things at you. On top of that, her entire character design, moves, quotes, and all, are a reference to one old cartoon or another.Peacock just makes me happy.
#3: Filia! "Let's go, Samson!" "HELL YEAH!"
Now we're getting into the characters that I truly love in this game, and Filia is no exception. A student trying to recover her memories with the help of her hair-parasite Samson, she is the most anime character in this whole game, and judge me if you will, I love it!
My only issue with her as that she plays VERY fast. I know that's the appeal for a lot of people, but for me, it's meh at best. But that doesn't detract from how much fun she is to play! That, and Samson is one of the best characters, both supportive and aggressive. Explains the fanart if you think about it. XD
#2: Painwheel! "GET OUT OF MY HEAD!"
Programmed to obey, but able to resist.
I swear I was so close to crying during Painwheel's story. One of the most unique and original character design's I've seen in a long time, Painwheel is someone you just can't help but feel bad for. But what makes her great is her ability to revolt. She's programmed to do what she's told, but will fight tooth and nail (sometimes literally) to maintain her free will.
I took a shine to her playstyle almost immediately, and I don't know why. She's fun to play as (if a bit disturbing in some moves) and has an interesting moveset that I wasn't used to in fighting games. All that did was make me want to play her more. Painwheel is my second favorite character in the entire game, second only to one.
Big Band! "Back on the beat."
Never once, in my 18 years of playing videos games, reading books, and watching anime and television, have I ever, EVER, seen any character as unique and original as this. A former cop, left for dead by a corrupt force, is revived as an agent to destroy the Skullgirl. His weapons of choice? TUBAS, TRUMPETS, CLARINETS, BRASS PIPING, AND A TRIANGLE. THIS BANDBORG FIGHTS WITH INSTRUMENTS. Not just fighting with instruments, but using them as legitimate weapons. When he hits you with a tuba, you STAY the f*** down. His entire body appears to be made of not only instruments but instrument components. A wisecracking badass reminiscent of the Engineer, weirdly enough, I'd like to meet someone who doesn't like Big Band's way of interacting with the characters.
Before I finally got around to downloading this free character, I looked at him as the odd-one-out (and accused him of being OP since he was the one guy I could never actually beat). He just seemed to not fit. Then I downloaded his character, got used to his control style, and played through his story. Wow. I wasn't necessarily wrong when I called him OP. He hits fricken HARD. Once you get used to how to use him properly, he's a veritable powerhouse in brass clothing, with several moves able to continue even after being hit.
Powerful, interesting, and unique. That's only partly why Big band is my Absolute favorite character in Skullgirls.
So fight on, Lab 8. With you keeping us safe, the Skullgirl threat should be eliminated... for now.
