Terry –your Terriermon, now Rapidmon– soaring through the skies, hugged your body against his armored chest to shield you from the destruction below. He watched helplessly as the world was devastated by indiscriminate divine lightning strikes.
"Hold on tight. If we keep movin' he can't getcha…" Terry's voice strained, his hug tightening. "And I won't let him getcha without a fight!" his tone tried to convey hope, but the tremor in his voice betrayed him.
You gave him a few gentle pats and reassurances, but your mind started to drift. His attempt at putting on a confident act reminded you of the past, of the events leading up to this.
Your confident lil Terry...
He was always dependable, but his need for validation took time to get used to. He and his brother had been around about as long as you, but life for them was difficult, to put it lightly. Out of the two, Terry was the accessible one when questions of their past came up. Loph —his younger Lopmon brother— would outright leave if the topic came up. From what you could piece together, both of them jumped from tamer to tamer, some neglectful and others too strict. Whenever they were deemed useless, they were ditched. No matter how much kindness you showed them, the fear of abandonment was always seemed to be a constant.
Terry didn’t want to fail you like he thought he had with his previous tamers.
Whenever you were out, Terry trained obsessively. Bunny Blast after Bunny Blast, Constant Terrier Tornados that gave him an immunity to dizziness. Everything had to be perfect before he showed off the results to you. Shivering anxiously, he'd await your arrival at his training spot. Every compliment you gave him was just temporary reassurance that he was doing good. One wrong word, accidental dismissal, or late arrival, was a reminder of his past.
One time you fell asleep after promising to watch him train, and for about two days he was practically a ghost. It took hours of watching him train in silence, and cheering him on when he hit his Super Duper Bunny Blast, to make him feel better. This seemed to be the key to comforting him.
“Thank you.” He held onto you tightly, his tears staining your shirt. His sniffles and sobs being the only sound in the room
You rubbed one of his soft ears. Your arms wrapped around him. Loph hugged his side, but was more so forcing himself into your hug
Terry evolving to Gargomon was a huge surprise. Things were easier with him, though he rarely sought your validation; a bittersweet change as you could no longer watch his eyes light up with each compliment. Yet, he still loved seeing you out of the corner of his eye during training sessions. Terry once told you he'd be your knight in shining armor. Or Rambo, guns blazing, or maybe Neo protecting trinity. He loved his action movies.
The near miss of lightening brought you back to reality, but all you could do was stare at your reflection in his shiny armor. Terry kept your head in place, not that you really wanted to look around. The screaming and everything you took in not too long ago was more than enough for multiple lifetimes. The cold nipping at your face thankfully replaced those thoughts with ones of the strong armored man keeping you safe; you guys were pretty high up, yet his warm body kept most of the cold away. Had both of you been in a better situation, you would have melted into his warm hold; possibly of passed out. This warmth reminded you of Loph, he always loved to snuggle you during winter nights.
It took your mind back to an easier time, your hand gently rubbing over Loph's soft head. You always had to scratch around his horns, he would let out small chirps if you gave them a real good scratching.
“Right. Right there.” He chirped out gently. His voice wavering as your fingers dig into the fur, almost as if you were digging into his brain. He looked up at you, his eyes sparkly like glitter.
“I wish. We could stay like this forever. You won’t ever leave, right?” His voice quivering as always, your rubbing not helping.
Terry looked at you from your right, waiting for your response.
You quickly reassured them, before hugging them really tight. Terry’s body felt warm against yours. Loph however, felt too warm
Loph was the emotional one of the two. It was obvious that the past haunted him the most, and the last thing he needed was for you to abandon him. While you were home, he was always a few inches away. He loved having all of your attention and affection to himself. Terry and him would constantly get into fights over his possessiveness. Though, talking to them usually broke it up. Once he got used to you, Loph kept himself busy by making gifts for you, his favorites seemed to be necklaces, that he'd put on you after a long day. They tended to have a funky little Angel, the first few looked wonky, but he got better and better with each new one.
When it came to you leaving the house, though, his emotions took a complete 180. Every time you prepared to leave, he would beg and plead for you to stay. Those soft little eyes welling up with tears, the desperation in his voice, or the tugging on your pant leg.
"Please don't go! I'll do anything… just stay! I don't want you to go" Loph cried out wildly as Terry tried to hold him back
“Terry stop them! Please, Terry please! It’s happening again it will, I know it will...” Breaking free from Terry's grasp, Loph blocked the door. A waterfall of tears forming on his distraught face
“I’ve done everything I could! Are my charms not good enough?! I can train, I’ll get strong like Terry!! I can! I can! Just don’t go, please oh please.”
All you could do was give reassurance, wipe away a few tears, but ultimately push or have Terry pry him off the door. He continued this routine for a while, you even gave him your number so he could reach you while you were out. Nothing seemed to work, though, until one day, it just stopped. Loph started acting strange after that, he'd stare at your belongings. Not once did Loph try to stop you from leaving. Instead, he'd start to whisper something under his breath, you could barely discern the word "Cherub".
You asked Loph about his change in attitude, but he laughed it off, though the mention of “Cheru” left him silent, and ended the conversation. This new routine continued until, while you were sleeping, he evolved into Turuiemon.
Things got so much worse after he evolved.
At first, Turuie was no different than Gargo. He seemed pretty level-headed, he made charms less, and opted to spend more time cuddling you. It was his turn to scratch your head, he found that the nape of your neck was the best spot. He was a sweetheart, but he did everything he could to keep you home.
At first, it was small stuff, belongings being misplaced; you wrote these off as a mistake you made during your post-work haze. Then your alarms and reminders stopped going off. Missing hangouts killed your social life, but Turuie was always there. He would constantly sing your praises all while trying to plant doubt. Believing that it was nothing more than a string of bad luck, you gave into his praises. Though you could tell he was trying to take advantage of you.
“You're such a hard worker. It wouldn't hurt to take one day off, right?~" Loph's voice was sweet like honey; his eyes soft and comforting. He sat up in bed next to you, his arm wrapped around your side
"I hope your friends can forgive you... That event must have been pretty important, I know how excited you guys were to go to it... Knowing them though, I doubt they would those... snakes" His voiced laced with venom as he held you close, making sure your teary eyes were dried by his exposed chest fur.
“Loph don’t say that about his friends. That’s not important right now” Terry, in Gargo form, checked his brother while hugging you from the back
It was his little routine to comfort you through what felt like a string of bad luck. He was always the first one on the scene, with arms wide open, ready to hear your issues. His advice was horrible, always having to do with cutting others off. At a certain point, you told him off; his “advice” sucked, yet you couldn't think he'd ever do anything to hurt you. That idea was shattered when one night, you awoke to two voices bickering just a room away, your door barely cracked open; Terry had confronted Loph for you.
"Loph... I know it's you. You can't just do that to them. What would they think?!" Terry said, his voice hinting at his boiling anger. The prongs at the end of his gun-hand held onto his face in disappointment.
"I'm helping us, Terry. If they stay home, they won't have a chance to-" Loph was cut off mid-explanation
"A chance to what, Loph. To leave? To find a new Digimon?! What do you think THEY'LL do if? WHEN! They find out you've been tampering with their shit?!" Terry said impatiently, his voice demanding.
"Don't... worry..." Loph's smile waned, but quickly came back
"I have it all planned out, if they try to abandon us, I can stop them!"
A loud shing sound, left the room silent. You held your breath, afraid of the source
"Loph." The Terry’s voice carried disgust
"I've learned a lot about myself, Terry... it called to me one night while they were out... it told me I could keep them to myself... I've seen what awaits me... Cherubimon." Loph's voice cracked slightly.
"I'll be a god... I'm not afraid to kill... I'd be able to rev-"
The sound of Terry's gun-hand hitting Turuie's stomach replaced the insane ramblings. Horrified by what he heard, Terry gut checked his little brother to hopefully snap Loph out of it. The rest of the night was a blur, but you never got out of that bed.
After that night, your string of bad-luck ended. Terry hovered around you a lot more, and Loph kept to himself. Not that you felt comfortable around him after that. They both tried to act normal, but things wouldn’t be the same for a while. Weeks later, while out for a walk, Loph hugged you gently and evolved into Antylamon.
This new form brought a complete 180 in character. At the time, you assumed that punch snapped Loph out of his obsession.
The way he changed, at the time you welcomed with open arms. You were finally given the freedom to come and go. His soft hugs, his comforting words, his wishes of good luck and safety while you were out. It all felt so real, and you finally felt free. You went out twice as often, went on days long trips, and finally reconnected with the friends you had lost. Things felt so perfect. Too perfect.
If only you had known that it was all a lie. How couldn't you fall for it, he smiled so brightly no matter what. His words never seemed to carry a deeper meaning. Then again… his smile would falter every time you told him of your plans, he hugged tighter than he ever did before. You can’t blame yourself, though, right? Terry was just as fooled as you were, they stopped hovering protectively around you. You assumed he apologized for the punch, as they seemed closer than ever. You both took the bait he cast out like starved fish. Now you both are paying the price for being so gullible.
A droplet hitting your head snapped you out of your memories once more. You looked up at Terry. His face was covered, but the stream of tears dripping down his armor revealed everything. He blamed himself for the situation you both were in now.
"That punch, it must have been that punch" you thought you heard him whisper.
The wind crashing against you both and the loud thunderous booms made it impossible for you to tell. You gave the exposed part of his body a few gentle pats to reassure him. He was scared, just as scared as he was when his brother evolved one last time.
You remember the exact moment it happened three days ago.
All three of you were watching a movie Loph recommended about forbidden vampire love. Terry wasn't excited, but he was never if it wasn't full throttle action. When the climax of the movie played, where the vampire love-interest fended off an attack from the towns people, Loph (as lopmon) stood up in your lap. Looking deep into your eyes, you could've sworn there were hearts as he stared.
"Loph, get outta the way, you’re ruining the movie for them!” Terry complained
The normal whining that would've followed was missing, instead replaced by an eerie silence. The TV frozen on a scene where the main character and vampire started to kiss.
“My. Sweet bunny.” Loph said melodically, his voice echoed in your mind
Slowly walking closer, he pressed himself against your body. Your questions and Terry's teases went unanswered. Slowly, the room itself began to glow. Soft pink and eggshell white paint rushing down the walls began to take over the room, it formed strange patterns as droplets of the paint began to float towards Loph. He slowly let go of you and began to float back, his arms outstretched as the colors seemed to follow his movements. You tried reaching out for him, but only felt warmth as your hand went right through. Now in the center of the room, Loph's eyes closed slowly as his body became a bright pulsing white that beat rhythmically.
Terry clutched your arm in fear
“Loph quit it dude what’re y-“ Terry‘s question was cut short as words written in digicode began to flash on the walls.
Terry quickly transformed to Gargo to protect you from the horrors unfolding in front of you both.
Loph’s small body twitched violently as he began to take his new form. His screams engulfed the room as he seized and grew in size. His limbs grew longer, his screams became higher pitched. The words appeared again in reverse order, peeling off the sides of the room, and circling around the Loph’s now elongated ears. Once all the words peeled off, they formed into a ring around the base of each ear. All the light covering the walls forced its way into Loph’s body, which caused him to contort and twist painfully. Finally, with a blinding light, the transformation was complete.
It was all that Gargomon could choke out while staring at his brother's new form. The horror on his face matched yours.
Loph’s mouth curved into a slight smile. Then his eyes slowly opened. He stared into your eyes, if felt like he pulled at your soul as he watched you unendingly.
“Dude, what the hell are you doing? You’re scaring us.” Terry put his arm out in front of you. He quivered but kept himself planted firm between you two
Loph’s smile stayed, but his eyes winced. He then began to speak.
“I. Live again. Thanks. To you."
It slowly raised a finger while speaking and pointed at you
You remember the feeling that rushed into your body as he pointed. Your very being told you to escape, to get away from this thing standing in front of you. It radiated a warmth you always felt when hugging Loph, but it was starting to burn. Its body was stiff and unnatural, as if it were getting used to a form that hadn't been touched in millennia.
"I. Am Loph. Your Loph. The true Loph."
It's voice was soft and gentle.
"It couldn’t be. You can’t be Loph. Give. Give me him back!"
Terry put his arm cannon up, aiming at the room sized Loph. He continued to shake while you stayed frozen in your chair
Lowering his arm slowly, Loph disengaged
You closed your eyes, rubbing them to figure out if you were dreaming.
As you rubbed, the surrounding area became warmer. When you opened your eyes, both you and Terry were trapped in a tight hug. A soft arm kept you both tight against it's fluffy tummy. Humming gently, it stayed in place. Terry looked towards you, mortified at what just happened. Looking down at you, it used another hand to rub your neck, you shivered gently while it moved to the nape. Seeing your fear and helplessness, Terry gathered every bit of his courage and hit Cherubi's stomach with a bunny pummel. It was enough to get it to release you two. Gargo fell on his feet, while you fell on your back.
It looked at the dent on its stomach which slowly moved back into place, then it slowly picked up it's head to look at you both. It's smile just as wide as before, but its eyes carried its sense of betrayal. You could sense the anger within, but it just stared.
"I thought it would be easy." Cherubi's form switched to Lopmon, who's teary face looked hopeless "I thought my snuggles and charms would be enough."
"Showing you that me and Terry were the only trustful ones didn't work either" Lopmon transformed to Turuiemon, his chest fur stained with tears, but his face scowled heartbroken "You cried into me, yet ran from me as soon as you could."
Turuie grew into Antylamon "I tried acting normal, I thought that would fix everything." He said softly as if he were completely fine "But, you left us for days. I was alone with my brother, like before." Antyl had a gentle smile on his face, the same one he'd always give you before you left
"You were going to leave, I was going to be alone. I wasn't good enough like Terry huh." Antyl transformed into Cherubi
It raised it's arm, it's palm wide open to the sky as if reaching for something
"It's okay though, I understand why. I could never be as strong as he was. Look at me now though"
The walls and roof disappeared, leaving only the floor and furniture decorating the room.
The sky began to darken, a loud rumbling playing out in the heavens. Then BOOM, the house next to yours was hit with a massive lightning bolt, completely eviscerating it. Terry grabbed your hand and pulled you in close. A car driving by stopped and looked at the damage, however as the driver exited the car another bolt came down eradicating him, his car, and the surrounding street.
Cheru looked down at you.
"I'll show you just how worthy I am."
Terry digivolved into Rapidmon and took off with you as fast as he could. Right as he did, though, Cheru dropped it's arm and lightning began to rain in droves from the heavens
This isn't the end of the story, I do plan on makin two endings.
A good and bad ending ofc...
I've been imagining Cheru dancing to "Someone to Call my Lover" so I might do something with that one day,,,
