During the failed German revolution of 1918-19, in which the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) sided with the right-wing Freikorps and executed Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. Since then, democratic socialists and social democrats have shown that they’re more interested in maintaining capitalism (albeit with more welfare and social programs) than in building socialism (which would entail the actual democratization of the economy and the end of Capital as an all-pervasive economic force). This encapsulates pretty much every modern-day democratic socialist politician throughout the US and Europe, and self-described demsocs often want “a combination of capitalism and socialism”. This meme is indicative of their lukewarm/centrist position in the grand scheme of world politics:

Luxembourg was litteraly a founding member of the KPD. Which was formed after the old SPD split over the question of supporting the 1. World War. (Leaving a few steps out here because nobody wants to read a detailed history of German communism here) She was a agitator against the SPD imposed upholding of capitalism.
