everything was unraveling around him, zack was dead. cloud saw him take his last breath– yet here he stood, smiling && acting as if he never crossed paths with the blond. before he could begin to process the male staring back at him, another barged through the entrance of seventh heaven– a member of SOLDIER. shaking with what cloud could only word as hatred for SOLDIER, ShinRa– lips parted to retort against the SOLDIERs accusations. to declare them as their true foe, with their underlying experiments && exterminations. 

                                    why would he be with them? 

“ my mistake–”  the others words wrenched him from his thoughts && perplexed emotions. a gloved hand wrapping around his own before offering a stern shake. blue hues locked onto what appeared to be the ghost of his friend, eyes pleading for him to see the truth. upon zacks inquiry for directions, could only shake his head- blond locks following suit. this spell of silence rendered him helpless, internally begging for enlightenment. could he not see what has been done to him? 

              –could he not see his living legacy before his very eyes?

 taking a step closer, the exSOLDIER was reluctant to place his hand over the scarred wounds of his cherished ally– but he persisted, fingertips grazing tanned skin. this really was him– and SOLDIER was going to take him away. 

                                                    no, not again. 

pulling away && sidestepping in front of the other, cloud acted as a human shield- obstructing the other SOLDIER from reaching his fellow comrade. ❛  if you value your life– turn around && leave. ❜  gaze shifting to zack,  he attempted to reassure him.  ❛  i am not your enemy.  ❜

The action seemed unnecessary and rather confusing to the man. Sure they were the enemy but wasn’t the point that it was both of them? But no, the blonde haired male was standing out as if an aid to Zack. Glancing from the lower ranked SOLDIER his gaze turned back to the blond haired man. You are- so familiar. Waving his hand off to the other he spoke out,” Head back to HQ with those coming to retrieve us. Tell them I am going to continue out on the mission okay?”

He offered a warm smile to the one he’d considered his ally.” We weren’t stopped that far off. Just let them know I head out in the direction need be.” The man seemed hesitant though the blond made him uneasy. “Yes sir. I’ll let them know you went on route.” Though hesitant he took a last glance around before making an exit. Sighing out slightly onyx tresses fell out of place still slightly sticking to moist skin. The weather wasn’t ideal but it never really seemed to be whenever he was out on mission.

Allowing mako stained eyes to land on the other once again he nodded towards him,” You ensure you aren’t my enemy- and...” Shrugging slightly he finished,” For some reason I believe you.” I know mom, you’d be furious I was disobeying my orders and getting into trouble again. But he just, he seems so familiar. Goin with my gut on this one. “So if you aren’t my enemy, then who are you exactly?”

Zack didn’t show regret in his choice to stay behind, though he never really showed regret with any of his choices. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have this strange feeling... that these people know something about my black out period.

魔術 —– With a drawn out sigh and a slouching of her shoulders, the mage offered a light nod to her friend. It was, in all honesty, much easier to concede to his wishes rather than fight them. His whining could get annoying very quickly. ❝Fine, fine… lead the way. But, I am paying for the next meal we have together, I don’t like being in debt to others.❞

The male felt his shoulders relax,” Sure whatever you say Lu.” Like that’ll ever happen! Allowing himself to lead the way he glanced back to the dark mage. She always seemed as if her mind was on something. Though he couldn’t tell if it was appearance or if she was actually off in another place. “ How things been on your side?”

魔術 —– Oh, she had heard him alright, but that didn’t mean that she was the type of woman that didn’t split the bill with her friends. But, knowing Zack as well as she did meant she also knew his next course of action. ❝Are you going to start whining if I continue to refuse your offer of taking the bill?”❞

She knew him rather well so the next was already spoken for,” Do you really got to ask that question? Come on let me do this don’t rob me of the feeling!” He was joking of course but this didn’t change the fact he was determined to pay for her.

魔術 —– This wasn’t a decision that he could make lightly, there were many things that needed to be considered before he moved forward. But, as much as it pained her, this was something Zack had to do alone, the mage could advise him, of course, but ultimately, he was the one that knew what was best for him. A nod was given before her expression smoothed, surprised by the sudden change in topic. ❝I could eat, yes… but you don’t have to pay for my share.❞

A smirk drew to his lips,” Come on Lu, I live to serve didn’t you just hear my spill! You have to let me pay.” Pushing his hair back and out of his face he gave a slight shrug,” I don’t get the chance often enough to treat others. Gimme the honor?” What a great way to put it. “What are you in the mood for?”

魔術 —– It’s understandable to feel that way, to feel that if he walked away now he could be leaving something unfinished. It was better to stay and see it through to the end. Living with regrets could become hard to handle, especially if the choices laid before you were simple ones; stay or go. ❝No one can tell you how to live your life, only you know what is best for you.❞ There was a level of conviction in her tone now. ❝It is better to make mistakes on your own, than have someone else’s hand in them. At least you know the choice had always been yours. But, if you feel staying is for the best, then stay.❞

Was he wrong? Would giving it up be the best option? It was hard to come to terms with something like this. Stay with the possibility that it is the wrong choice. Waste his life in uniform and die not feeling fulfilled, or leave. Lose his rank, his right to fight sword in hand alongside the military in attempt to save those in need. I have a lot of thinking to do. “ Yeah. I’ll figure it out, and if I fail well at least it stuck with my choice.” Changing the tone a bit he offered a smile to the woman,” You hungry? My treat!” Why not? I haven’t been called back on mission yet and it’s kind of nice being with friends.

魔術 —– In a sense, Zack was preaching to the proverbial choir, hadn’t she become a guardian for more or less the same reasons? Granted, she had done so initially in the hopes of defeating Sin before Yuna could become a fully fledged summoner, but after her first pilgrimage her reasons for it had changed. She wanted to protect those in her charge, and if that meant giving her life so that her summoner could live, all the better. ❝It doesn’t sound crazy at all, in fact, I have done the same in the past. I decided that my life would be given without hesitation for the people I care about. But then those people didn’t need my protection any more, and so I made the decision to help those in need. It is equally satisfying.❞

Nodding to the other he let out a heavy sigh,” I agree with you, and I am sure I would find satisfaction in helping people as a freelancer, but-” Zoning out a bit on a small black spot on the ground he tried to focus on how he felt. “ I feel like...there still is something for me in SOLDIER. Like if I leave, I will regret it...and I didn’t work my way up for nothing.” Letting out a slight laugh he turned to a bit more of a lighthearted tone,” But who knows really? I guess I will wait it out a little longer.”

魔術 —– The mage could sense his apprehension, after all, she had felt the same way when the decision had been reached to offer her services and skill set to someone other than a summoner. ❝Did you join SOLDIER so that you could help people? Or was it for something else?❞ It may make this conversation a little easier, if she could understand why he enlisted in the first place, she could make him see that freelancing could offer him the same sense of satisfaction.

Her question caught him off guard. Why did you join SOLDIER? Just standing there in silence he allowed his gaze to shift back to the mage. “I-... well I-” It came back to him, clear as day. I am going to join SOLDIER. Just like him. A smile was brought to his lips,” I joined SOLDIER to help people..when I was a kid, my town was under attack and SOLDIER came to save us. A man- gave his life to save me. Since that day I pledged to dedicate my life to SOLDIER. So I could do the same one day. It may sound crazy I guess, but to sacrifice yourself for someone else. To save someone. The idea seems so liberating.”

Crossing the threshold his gaze shifted to the large familiar doors. “Been a long time hasn’t it?” Approaching it his arm extended to apply pressure forcing them to open. The coliseum hadn’t changed in the slightest. Shifting a bit his shoulders popped. It was quite a long ride to get here, though he’d decided it was about time to venture back and pay his old friends a visit. What kind of guy would he be if he didn’t? 

Entering the front doors he noticed the empty entry hall,” Phil?” His voice echoed through the hall no answer returning his call. Must be off somewhere maybe? Though...I don’t doubt Herc is here somewhere. Allowing himself in he took a gander around checking a few of the first rooms before entering the stadium. Minor enemies flooded the field a smirk coming to the onyx haired mans lips,” Course, shoulda guessed.” 

Reaching over his shoulder gloved digits grasped the hilt of his sword. Well, let’s not disappoint. Swinging the blade with ease he quickly banished a few of the enemies nearby. A few more swings allowing him to advance further towards the center of the stadium. As he neared the number of enemies decreased before he reached the final figure in the stadium.

 A smile tugged onto his lips as his gaze met the others. Placing the blade back over his shoulder he began to speak,” It’s been forever, hasn’t it Hercules!” Just seeing the other brought many memories back to the soldier.

魔術 —– It was a tricky situation, and that was putting it mildly. Zack genuinely believed that he would have nothing if he left SOLDIER and pursued other paths in life. To an extent, the mage had felt the same regarding her position as a Guardian. But eventually, she realised that there were people that still needed her, or rather her skills in battle, and so she offered them to those in need.

❝Free-lance. Leave SOLDIER and strike out on your own. You would be very surprised at just how many people would need you, not to mention that helping them is a great reward in and of itself.❞

Hear her out. “Freelancing huh?” Crossing his arms his gaze shifted to the ground beneath his feet,” Suppose that wouldn’t be too bad.” Though, I don’t know if I can see myself as a freelancer. But then again all I can really see myself doing is being in SOLDIER, but that because it’s all I know. “Maybe you are right.” He offered a smile and a short nod to the woman. A thank you in the only way he could at the moment.

魔術 —– He was right, that didn’t sound like him at all. In fact, nearly every time she had seen the SOLDIER, he seemed so care free, but now? Zack may as well have been carrying the weight of the world upon his shoulders. It worried her. ❝If you’re unhappy, you should make the necessary changes to be happy. If devoting your life to the military is no longer working, then leave, go free lance like I have. If you want a family, maybe seriously consider what kind of woman you would want to be your wife. Sitting around and moping won’t solve anything.❞

Listening to the mage speak was calming, though what she spoke of seemed impossible.” I know that of course. But SOLDIER is all I have. If I leave it I don’t know what I’d do with myself. I don’t want to burden others for my happiness.” Sighing out he allowed his eyes to meet her again,” Plus, I think..SOLDIER  is like a family to me. Without it I don’t think I will be any happier. I’ve worked hard for what I have.” 

The initial plan won’t work now. I think clinging to Cloud will do nothing but hinder his life as well. I need a new path.

魔術 —– Were he to ever verbalise that thought process, he may find himself not alone in feeling that way. For years, and even now, the mage felt as though she were on the outside looking in, disjointed because of her life choices. But it was what she had chosen, no one had forced her to be this way, so in the end she really only had herself to blame.

❝I thought that I would… I thought that once it was over and we got to go home, that I would like being in one place. But I do not. I feel restless.❞

Struck out. “Probably would be the same for me...I was thinking about retiring my position but now, well you’ve got me worried. haha!” Leaning back again he allowed his eyes to the sky. “ I want to find a place where I am comfortable in life. Were I am not worried about the decisions I've made...and about the outcome. And as of right now..I know it doesn’t sound like me but I am just..not happy.”

魔術 —- Envy? There was nothing worth envying, not where she was concerned. No, Lulu had made certain choices about her life when she had been very young, simply because the mage never thought that hr life would be long enough to plan for things such as having a family. ❝I suppose you could say that I am a retired Guardian, but that  isn’t strictly correct -we are obsolete. Still, I cannot bring myself to plan for things such as that.❞

Another nonchalant shrug. ❝You are correct, however, you still have time.❞

Turning mako stained eyes back to her he thought of what to say next. He didn’t want to pity his life choices, but he felt he was in so deep there was nothing else to do but to go forward. It just feels like, sometimes I am not even living my life. Like I am just...on the outside looking in. 

“Maybe so, i’ll figure it out eventually I guess....do you like being retired?” Envy. Such a strange unusual feeling.

魔術 —– This conversation had made her rather uncomfortable, it bothered her how people she considered friends simply could not accept that she was perfectly fine on her own, that she didn’t need someone to make her feel whole. ❝Perhaps… but I’m not worried about it. I really am fine on my own, it is… less complicated.❞

Moving his gaze to the sky he let out a slight sigh,” Yeah I guess you are right, I envy you.” Collecting his thoughts he averted his gaze back to her,” I really hate being alone. I feel like...sometimes, that I’ve wasted my life working so hard on my rank in SOLDIER. That my parents might have been right that what will my rank matter when I retire and have no family?” 

Mood shift. “Though...I’ve still got plenty of time right?”
