How to Write Your Own Spells
There are lots of ways to create spells, from planning everything to the minutest detail ahead of time to absolutely flying by the seat of your pants in the moment. If you'd like to write your own spells, either for use in your craft or as a creative exercise, here are some suggested steps that I use in my own practice:
1) Determine the intent or goal of your spell. Decide, first and foremost, what you want the spell to do. Refine your goal if necessary and try not to be too nebulous. Your intent tells the spell what it's meant to do. A more focused goal may increase the chances of success.
2) Determine how you want the spell to manifest. Decide how the spell should work and what the result should look like. This is a good time to build in a sign of success, especially for spells that may not work in an obvious or visible way.
3) Determine what or whom the spell will affect. If the spell is to have a target, be it a person or a place or an animal or an object, decide what that should be and how they or it will be represented in the casting.
4) Determine how long the spell is meant to work. If your spell is timebound or has a deadline, decide what that will be. If the spell is meant to work long-term, you may want to check in and refresh it from time to time. (Not every spell will be timebound. Many spells will simply expire when they have fulfilled their purpose or if they are blocked or circumstances are not favorable.)
5) Determine the timing of the spell, if applicable. Not everyone uses celestial or astrological timing for their spells, but if you do, look into the prevailing conditions and decide on an advantageous time for your casting. (Please note that magical timing can only enhance your spell and casting something on the "wrong" day will not necessarily cause it to fail.)
6) Determine what methods and materials you want to use to cast the spell. Decide how you're going to go about performing the casting, whether you're doing a ritual or making a charm or just using energy. If you're going to need a ritual space or physical components, plan that out and make sure it fits with what you want to do.
7) Determine the words, if any, which will empower the spell. If you want to include a prayer or a petition or a song or an incantation with your spell, decide what that should be. This is not strictly necessary and the words need not be spoken aloud. (Rhyming incantations are not required, but if you prefer them that way, you can certainly do so.)
8) Prepare the materials for casting the spell. Get all your necessaries together ahead of time. Make sure you have everything you need, that tools and components are in good and useable condition, prepare your workspace, and make sure everything is within easy reach so you don't have to stop and search for things in the middle of your casting. (And for goodness sake, if you're working with open flame, observe fire safety and tie your hair and sleeves back.)
9) Finalize details and perform the casting. When you're ready to begin, try to eliminate as many possibilities for distraction or interruption as possible. Go over your spell and components one more time, then proceed with casting the spell.
10) Record the particulars for future reference and to determine how well the spell worked. Make a record of the spell, including your goal, how it should manifest, the words and components used, the date of the casting, the casting method and procedure, and how the casting went. If there are any additional details or observations that seem important, include those as well. This will serve as a useful learning tool in the future and will allow you to check your work if the results make themselves known.
It's useful to write spells from time to time if the inspiration strikes you, in order to better understand how they fit together and how they work. Plus it's a fun and creative journaling exercise and recording the spells you cast a great way to measure your progress later on.

Deconstructing internalized homophobia is wild. I realized I was gay about three years ago, and I spent a long time working on my own internalized feelings. I knew I had to work through a lot of religious trauma and whatever the horror of 2000s predatory lesbian stereotypes was. I knew I would come to accept myself in time.
What I did NOT expect, was how much my attraction would change as I worked on things.
I distinctly remember telling my best friend when I came out to her that I wasn't really as attracted to butches/mascs, mostly just feminine women. Three years later, I swear it's flipped. I love butches and tomboys and androgynous lesbians. I like feminine women too, but the pull isn't nearly as strong.
I'm finally ready to date, I think, I feel confident in my sexuality and who I am, but I'm still kind of scared. I'm 30 and so inexperienced, I do worry about that getting in the way. But, I suppose as with all things in life, you just have to try it out and see where things go.
After many requests, Iâve made a rebloggable version of my âWeather Magicâ page. Here you will find heaps of resources to help you with weather/storm craft. If youâve read some of my previous posts about weather magic you will notice some similarities - that is because this is a collection of every weather witching post that Iâve ever posted compiled into handy resources post.
Weather Magic
The term âweather magicâ or âweather witchingâ has been used to mean anything from divination and forecasting of weather to actual control and manipulation of the weather itself. From calling up treacherous storms to destroy anotherâs crops or providing fair winds for those at sea, witches (and even those who do not consider themselves to be such) have always been involved with weather magic. When you consider that most forms of magic are based around an agricultural past, the ability to affect and predict the weather was considered an invaluable skill. After all, if your familyâs livelihood depended on the success of your crops (or the ability to find water as it did in my familyâs case), weather magic would be an extremely handy thing to know.
Why the url Storm Born Witch?
I am quite fortunate, as the gift for weather related magic comes easily to my family. For generations, the men in my family have been dowsers or water diviners. However, it wasnât until after I displayed an aptitude to weather related magic that I was told about my familyâs history with it. My grandfather was the last water diviner in the family and he died when I was very young so I was never taught how to divine for water. My grandmother was the one to teach me what little she knew about weather magic - the rest either occurred naturally or I picked up along the way.
Calling Up A Wind - Whistling Up A Wind
This is the most common form of weather magic and has been practiced for hundreds of years. Depending on the pitch and tone of the whistle a witch can create a gentle breeze or a sharp gust of wind. Traditionally, if the skill of whistling up a wind does not come naturally to you the option of making a âwind whistleâ out of willow or alder wood is available.
Here in Australia, whistling up a wind is probably the most common form of magic I do. I honestly do not go a day without whistling up a cool breeze. Itâs bloody hot here and sometimes a cool breeze is just what you need.

Storm Casting
Storm casting is the art of creating storms. There are many different methods to creating storms and bringing rain. The method used by my family is to fill a jug with water and while sitting outside (or facing a window) pour the water into a basin or bowl. Dip the tip of your pointer finger into the water and slowly make five clockwise circles in the water (if you have a pendant necklace this can be used instead - just above the water in the bowl). As you are making the circles call the wind to bring in a storm by blowing (or whistling a continuous low note - the sound of wind over the mouth of a glass bottle) over the water in the basin.

My Method of Calling Storms by stormbornwitchâ
Traditional Methods of Calling Storms by stormbornwitchâ
Ways to Stop a Storm (Dispersing, Binding & Preventing)
There are multiple ways to stop a storm. The most common are dispersing or binding storms. However there are also ways to prevent storms from coming by directing them away from where you are. This is great if youâre holding an event outside and you need good weather.
Dispersing
This method involves spreading the storm out over a large area thereby minimising its effects. You can disperse a storm by calling winds to blow it away (or in a certain direction) or if you favour using weather maps you can draw the low pressure system moving away and gradually dissipating.
Binding (Storm Catching)
This method is also called âstorm catchingâ and involves catching a storm and binding it within an object (usually a bottle or knots) so it can be released gradually at a later date by pulling out the cork or undoing the braid/knots.
Resources for Binding Storms
How to bind a storm in your hair by stormbornwitchâ
How to bind the wind in rope by ioqayinâ
Storm catching or âreeling in a stormâ is even more difficult than storm casting so itâs always wise to think before you cast. Too much energy put into a storm and it will go on for weeks (and cause some flooding - basement incident) or it will be extremely violent and knock down power lines and tree branches. Too little energy and all you will get is a 5 minute shower of rain.
Other ways to stop a storm (Cutting a Storm) by witchuptheroadâ
Preventing a Storm (Weather Maps)
However, if you wish to prevent a storm from forming, youâre going to have to pull out the weather maps. To make a weather map all you need to do is to print out a map of your local area or the area youâre trying to keep a storm away from.
Just use google maps and donât make the area too big or you might seriously strain yourself magically. Then laminate the map - now you have your own âwhiteboardâ to draw weather symbols on to generate certain types of localised weather.
To practice this kind of magic you really do need to know how weather systems work and how theyâre likely to move; knowing a little bit about meteorology goes a long way.
Once youâre ready, find out what the weather is predicted to be and draw it on your map. Now draw the high/low pressure systems moving so that the area youâre trying to protect doesnât get rain. This method can also be used to bring rain to a certain area.

I donât really know what people generally call this method of sigil making, so Iâm just calling it âLetter Shapingâ because youâre using the basic shapes from certain letters. EDIT: Itâs one of many variations of the âSpare Methodâ created by Austin Oswald Spare in the early 1900s This is the most common form of sigil making, and it allows the most creative influence. As you see above the sigils are for nearly the same thing, yet the sigils came out completely different. Not because the purpose was different, but because I approached them both a different creative way, and thatâs what I like so much about this method. Thereâs a lot of freedom and personalization involved.
(UPDATE: Hereâs a link to a guide on how to deconstruct letters down to basic shapes)
â spell & curse breaking â
methods for negating spells you have cast:
destroy the physical representation of the spell i.e. if your spell was contained within a jar, break the jar and dispose of the pieces
disassemble the spell and cleanse each component individually
place item in a bath of sea salt and dried herbs that are associated with cleansing and banishing - leave overnight and disassemble the spell when finished
cleanse the item with moon or rain water and disassemble if applicable
place the item in a black box to negate its effects
bury the item for 3 days, retrieve it, then dispose of it
bury the item on the night of the full moon and retrieve it at the next new moon
create a sigil or written incantation with the intent of breaking the spell and place the item on top of the paper - leave in place overnight
create a written incantation that includes the details of the spell - bury, burn, drown, rip apart, or throw it away
light a black candle that is surrounded by sea salt while focusing on the intent of negating the spell - recite an incantation if you wish, and allow the candle to burn down; sweep the sea salt out your back door
breaking spells others have cast upon you and protecting yourself:
perform a âreturn to senderâ spell - find a black taper candle; turn it upside down; cut the tip off and leave the wick in place; carve âreturn to senderâ and the targetâs name (or a description of them) into the candle; light the candle upside down and let it burn down completely
leave a witch bottle outside of your home - it should contain items like: pins, needles, broken glass (to shred their negative intentions towards you); your name and the names of those who may be affected by this negative energy plus an incantation for protection (e.g. your loved ones, pets, anyone who lives in your home); and lemon juice, lime juice, or sea salt (to purify their negative energy so that it may not get to you)
create a mixture of charcoal, chili powder, and garlic powder - sprinkle around the perimeter of your home to stop a spell in its tracks
alternately, you may combine these ingredients, add to a hollow pendant, and wear on your person to protect you from the effects of a spell
if you know the details of the spell that has been placed on you, write them down on paper; while focusing on breaking the spell, hold the paper in your hand, and then rip it to shreds; throw the pieces in the trash, or bury in your backyard
if you donât know the exact details, write down the effects you have been feeling if you think they have been caused by a spell or malintent directed at you; follow the steps above
submerge yourself in a bath of sea salt and light frankincense incense - place the incense on the edge of the tub or somewhere safe in your bathroom - to cleanse yourself of any negative energy that has been directed at you
place an energetic shield over yourself or your home that is designed to negate negative energy
tips:Â
close all loopholes
when crafting a spell, remember to create a fail safe (e.g. âthis spell will be broken if X occursâ)
add timed conditions to your spells (e.g. âthis spell will be broken on the night of the next full moonâ and include a specific date)
be specific when describing the target that will be affected by the spell (whether itâs you or someone else, be sure to include taglocks whether it be their name written or spoken aloud, DNA such as hair, fingernail clippings, etc., or a photo of the target)
use ingredients, supplies, and tools that match your intent
employ a method of protection before casting spells, whether the intent is malefic or not
cleanse your space and tools before and after performing a spell to âwipe the slate cleanâ

⢠In your grimoire or spellbook to boost your craft
⢠On letters and stationary to send your magick out into the world
⢠On teapots and cups for enchanted brews
⢠On Polaroid cameras to capture good vibes
⢠On plant pots to encourage growth and vitality
⢠On spell bottles or ingredients to seal your intention
I dont know if your requests are open or if they're not when they will be, but maybe keep in mind something for "snow" or "healing cold"? (i know it sounds weird, but I get reverse? seasonal depression, in that my mental health really declines over the summer & warm months. sometimes it feels like the only time im ever happy is in the dead of winter, and what with climate change & the predicted rainy winter, ive sort of been dreading the thought that there won't be any cold weather to help me)
Sure thing, these are the first weather sigils Iâve made, so I hope they work will for you
You can use this sigil like you would any other sigil, charge it, activate it, do what feels right.
This one however, would be best used as burned ashes or ripped up into tiny pieces, then scattered onto a map on the area you wish to inflict.

Scrying
Scrying is a pagan tool used for seeing things that cannot be seen normally. It can be used to gauge the future, or see what paths are laid before us. It can also help answer questions we may have. Scrying is a form of divination. There are many ways to scry. Some of the more popular forms include crystal balls and black âscryingâ mirrors.Â
Crystal Balls are exactly what they sound like, a smooth, polished ball of quartz or other type of crystal that is charged with magickal powers. Crystal balls come in many sizes, some able to fit in pockets, others that take up the majority of space on a small table. I would not necessarily consider bigger to be better with crystal balls. I find the type of crystal and how well that crystal attunes with the witch using it are far more important than how large the crystal is. The bigger ones can get pretty pricey pretty quickly, but it does come down to personal preference.
Black âScryingâ Mirrors are round or square mirrors of various sizes that are made from obsidian. They can often be decorated with a gem stone border or other type of charged and powerful decorations. Mirrors are supposed to imitate water scrying, as when they were first being built they were thought to resemble water in a fixed state.
There are other forms of scrying that take a little more practice becasue they rely on the elements which, as we all know, mother nature isnât always willing to cooperate. She has her own agenda. Water in a bowl, smoke from incense or a smudge stick, or fire from a candle flame or fire place or cauldron can all be used for scrying as well
Water Scrying is best done by filling a bowl or other vessel with water. I prefer rain water or ocean water as I feel it is more connected to the earth. Some sources say to use a dark blue or black vessel. I personally donât think the color of the vessel makes much of an impact as this form of magick is based on the water. The idea is to look into the water, but more than that, to look through and past the water into the knowledge being sought.Â
Smoke Scrying can be done through the smoke from incense or from a smudge stick. This type of scying is based on finding patterns and shapes in the smoke tendrils and then interpreting what they mean through symbolism. This can be a less accurate form of scrying, because detecting exact shapes and patterns in a substance as flimsy and sensitive to air flow as smoke can be difficult.
Fire Scrying  is powerful. It can be done with a bonfire, coals from a grill, a fireplace or wood stove, a cauldron fire, or simply a candle flame. Fire can be one of the easiest elements to focus on because the way fire and flames move have a naturally hypnotic effect that can lull almost any witch into a scrying trance like state. Fire is my personal favorite because it is the element I am most in tune with, but that doesnât stop me from trying other forms of scrying.

Song of Storms Spell
Required items:
The Song of Storms from the Legend of Zelda (feel free to bust out your ocarina if you have one)
A bowl of waterÂ
A wand or something else to direct energy (a stick, your finger, a pendulum, a crystal point, etc.)
Associated herbs or crystals for enhanced energy [optional]
Herbs: saffron, heather, pansy, rosemaryÂ
Crystals: labradorite, azurite, pietersite, iolite, malachite, nebula stone, lapis lazuli, hemimorphite
Instructions:
Fill your bowl with water.
If you have them, surround the bowl with herbs or crystals.
While the song is playing (or after if you decide to use an actual ocarina), use your wand to stir the water clockwise as you visualize a storm forming over you.Â
When the song is over, pour the water outside in the soil.Â
*Best performed when a storm is likely or probable to occur in your area - youâre just helping it along instead of making it appear out of thin air*
