I would just like to say, I’ve suffered from Maladaptive for years. It would make me late to class, work, you name it. I’ve been to doctors for depression and anxiety but it wasn’t until I saw a psychiatrist that I was diagnosed with OCD and given a high dose of medication (Zoloft) to help. And amazingly, it helped. I used to daydream about 6 hours a day, and now it’s cut down to maybe 1-2 hours every other day. I don’t have the urge anymore to do it, I don’t feel weird or anxious if I don’t pace. It’s fantastic.

I know health care is a really rough situation right now. I know there’s medical bills and availability problems. But for all of you out there with MDD, there’s hope. If you can, please do. The generic antidepressant that I’m on costs about $10 a bottle. If you can’t, it might be worth it to research OCD coping techniques and see how they apply to your MDD.

From what I’ve seen, MDD is considered to be under the umbrella of OCD. So it makes sense. (But please I’m not a doctor)

Please take care of yourself. There’s hope. There’s treatment. This is what worked for me, and I’m hoping that me spreading the message will help others achieve the same result.

God, it all makes sense now. I was never good at school because i would always daydream. when i got older it got excessive. To the point where i act out my daydreams like plan out conversations and act like i’m preforming (that’s my true passion in life). I have anxiety and depression and it’s hard for me to talk to people. every time anybody talks to me i try and pay attention but i always find myself thinking about hanging out with my favorite celebrities or good movie ideas or even song lyrics. i felt like such a loser all the time. i am so glad i’m not the only one who does this because i truly thought i was.

although I'm one semester from actually being a doctor, just wanted to say you're not alone!!!!! I've always been very empathetic with patients, both my strength and downfall because when the situation looks dire, I just create an elaborate story in my head of an alternate reality.....which means I'm constantly late in the morning. tbh I'm already looking up alternate careers for medical backgrounds 😂😭

I like to Daydream

Hello! So when I was little, my cousin and I would play "Pretend," and she would always say that she could never have done it without me and my imagination. Now that I'm older it seems my imagination has lingered on. As a graphic designer, I use my imagination a lot and maybe my daydreaming has added to that buuuut my case is a little interesting. I never thought it was a problem until I started getting older. I will daydream and act out these day dreams by myself in my room. They can be inspired from books, movies, a good song, or a scenario that could possibly happen in my life. And I'm always the main character. And when I say "act out" I mean like pacing and talking aloud to myself. And these can even take place late at night or in public, whenever or whatever it was triggered by. I've learned to not read late at night anymore because of it. I think this is MDD (I hope it is) I've been trying to put a finger on who I am since I started recognizing my behavior. It is so INCREDIBLY comforting to know there are others like me out there. I would love to know if anyone else has a similar experience to mine--I'd love to talk about it.

being a doctor and daydreaming constantly

my daydreaming started when i was in 8th grade. where i come from no one acknowleges any type of psychological condition , not even the ones that are actually in the DSM. well i was a good student and i have always taken science subjects but the day dreaming grew worse and worse during high school years and my performance on tests became inconsistent. A lot of people told me to take easier subjects but I kept my science subjects with me, without really thinking where they would lead me to. Any ways I applied to med school. I didnt get in. That was the impetus for me working really hard over the last remaining year I had and i finally got into one. And then in the first semester I lapsed into my state of constant day dreaming till i was jolted to consiousness by my semester 1 exam that I managed to marginally pass after a lot of last minute panic-induced cramming. The next few years I worked the hardest I could because the fear of semester 1 kept haunting me, till i totally burnt myself out. And i kept dragging myself despite the burn out. I don’t even like meeting people anymore. I just respond to the voices inside my head. 'They are more interesting then what people around me are saying. I used to do some artwork at the end of every semester as a catharsis. i haven’t done it it 2 years now. I feel like i am an impostor, I dont deserve to be a doctor. My only motivation to study wasnt a motivation at all but a fear that i would end up last or fail. I have a lot of empathy for patients so that kept me going for a while but at some grew frustrated becasue I would always stop short of a correct diagnosis or treatment plan because my basics were not good enough. And then i think about looking back but after coming this far it seems impossible. I have taken a sabbatical from work. I plan to work on my basic concepts, but istill find myself going into day dreams.

So today I found out that I never realized that this was a actual problem, I thought daydreaming for hours was so normal. But it make so much sense now, I don't spent time with family and friends because I rather be alone and day dream because it made me feel happy. I suffer from depression, add, and anxiety disorder triggers unknown. And when I'm alone I day dream being someone different but still have my life. Like a cool me or better me

I've only recently found out that I have this disorder and I'm so happy to know that I'm not alone. I've worried about it for years and only at 19 did I think to look up my symptoms. Thanks for making this blog! I love hearing about everyone else's experiences. They make me feel less alone.

So my daydreaming started getting excessive two years ago when I discovered anime and kpop, before that it was something I just did when I was alone. Now I do it during school, on car journeys and everywhere in between. At school I still manage to listen and get work done but I've found that my friends have started to distance themselves leaving me to just sit there and daydream, which sometimes is good but other times it can be really isolating. I keep huge organisers which contain profiles of over 30 different characters from my current universe that I've been developing for two years and lots of short scenario ideas. Whenever we do creative writing and have to develop characters or when we do long, improvised plays in drama I am always the first to come up with a believable character. People ask me how I do it and it is really hard to explain that I have this huge fantasy world based off both fictional, real and imaginary people. I even wonder what they themselves do to create characters and how hard it must be cause they don't have the same amount of imagination as I do. Mostly my Maladaptive daydreaming has been a positive in my life and I'm glad that I have this safe place full of my characters to retreat to when I have no where else to go.

My maladaptive daydreaming has been going on for about 7 years now, and now that I am in college, it's ruining my studies. I always try to study for courses and never do because this life in my head is better than my life out here.

I am so happy I found this blog and know there is a name for it. I've been daydreaming as long as I can remember. It's at the point where if I'm not interacting with someone I'm daydreaming. I do it all the time. I can be completing a task and still be doing it like shopping and working. I go to school and have a job but even there I still day dream. I don't know if I'll ever stop and I'm scared of what I'll feel like if I do. I don't know life without it. But thank you for running this blog.

When i was 10, i started to suffer from depression and it got so worse that i started to have suicidal thoughts, i know it sounds fucked up that a 10 year old girl wanted to kill herself but i did. The only thing which stopped me from doing exactly that was “hope”. I started to imagine having a perfect life, i imagined falling in love and just having someone to love me back and just imaging the perfect life gave me hope that one day i’ll be able to live it. And that’s how my daydreaming saved me after 3 years of suffering from depression. It was an escape.

I started to realize that i was daydreaming excessively and that i couldn’t focus or stay attentive because i slip into my daydreams. After i catch myself daydreaming, i feel like shit because i literally find myself sitting in my room talking to myself, in the middle of the night i just get up and start to imagine conversation, i act them out and its starting to really affect my life in a negative way. So, the one thing which helped get out of my depression is becoming the reason i am falling again.

Yesterday, i came across the term “maladaptive daydreaming” I felt as if a frigging weight was lifted of my shoulders. Before i came across this term , i felt as if i was was going crazy, i used to cry because i thought i had a fucking serious mental condition, i used to google “talking to myself” and all these serious mental conditions would show up and that used to give me so much stress and anxiety. i remember, i told my friend that i thought i was going crazy because i talk to myself, she tried to tell me that it was okay and normal and that she used to talk to herself to and i couldn’t actually tell her what i was feeling because i didn’t know it existed.

Now that i know what i’m going through and i am not alone, i hope i can beat this and actually do the things i imagine myself doing.

I don't think theres ever been a time where I've been able to sit and watch a movie the whole way through. Apart from if I've watched it at the cinema or at someone elses house. I just get these ideas for stories and i can't continue to watch without pausing it and going to daydream.

I think I have mdd. Actually I know I do and in a way I guess I always did but I just couldn’t give it a name or cause. I have always been anti social, even without me wanting to, I have always been disinterested in other people or things in reality. My favorite time was spent in my room, listening to music and building stories in my head. I knew I was different in a way from other people and there had to be something but I didn’t know what. I didn’t suspect that my daydreams had anything to do with it, although thinking about it now it all seems so obvious. I even started researching OCD and Aspergers because many of the symptoms would apply to me however something would still be missing or unsure. One day I was just scrolling through tumblr and I stumbled on something called Maladaptive Daydreaming. After dong some research and reading stories from other people, I realized I have been living with this for a major part of my life. All the symptoms matched and made sense. For years I have been creating complex worlds in my mind with characters that I could relate to more than anything in the real world. It really is like an addiction and every time something stressful would happen to me I would just retreat to this imaginary world.

Daydreaming has kind of become a routine part in my day. I will go to college do my homework and spent the rest of the time listening to music, or reading a book, or watching a movie, or anything to generate stories in my head. Even when driving I find myself slipping to this fantasy world. There were times when I wanted it to stop so I could focus in other things but it became almost impossible and I just do not want to let go. Fortunately I have been able to manage it a bit so it doesn’t affect my college life as much, but I can’t say the same for my social life. I have gotten on plenty of arguments with my parents because most of the time I want to be alone and private. They do not understand how I could just stay alone and literally spend the entire day not talking to anyone. I don’t have that many friends either and I have lost friends before just because I preferred being alone and would rather spend time imagining stuff than actually socializing.

But I don’t think I can ever let go. I have built an entire world in my head with a complex history and generations of characters. These characters have supported me and I have grown with them and watched them grow as well. How can I let go?However, I can’t find the strength to show this world to anyone, not even my family. I have tried writing some of the stories down, but I always hide the journal and I don’t want to show it to anyone. I would like to make a show out of my daydreams so all the time and energy I spent building this world do not go to waste and people can understand me more, but I don’t know if it will ever be possible.
