A really cool album I like! Plays (2008) by Secret Mommy.
This album is really weird. Coming from artist Andy Dixon and his many different friends across the Vancouver, BC, region. This work can soundly be categorized as "sound collage", a very eclectic genre that I will be talking about at some point.
The artist who made it booked studio time and recorded a bunch of different musical phrases and sections then digitally re-sequenced those into the album. Making it into a very interesting example of sample-chopping and electronic music with no synthesized sounds at all. This gives the album a very organic and beautiful sound.
Many of the sounds themselves have been repitched or sliced into complete nonsense, sounding almost insect-like or an impulse response. I find these sounds very cute and comforting.
This work came to me from it's similarities to the much more modern electronic genre, Botanica, which is very concerned with a sense of space and location. Dixon's other solo albums are also largely sound-collage-based, consisting of field recordings Dixon collected from many different sources. Obviously these are both very concerned with creating a musical sense of space, but Botanica is very, very, very electronic and synthesizer driven. I suppose it's not very surprising that the album from 2008 is less electronic and more natural than the one from 2022.
You should give it a listen, as well as Secret Mommy's other work.
