Veronica was thrown off by his cold tone but she quickly regained composure and inwardly rolled her eyes. Guys. "I think we need to talk," she said getting slightly nervous. Her cheeks reddened slightly as she looked at the ground. She really needed to stop putting herself in these situations… emotions really weren’t her thing.

Veronica walked quietly, thinking of Elijah. She couldn’t believe he was back let alone alive. He had been gone so long rumors of his death had begun to spread. Her heart had nearly burst when she heard them and sadness had overwhelmed her. All she could think about was Elijah and that’s when she realized how fond she had grown of him. When he finally returned to Hogwarts she was so happy. She decided to visit him but she was told no one was allowed near him for the time being. So instead she sat at a table and wrote the most emotional letter she had ever written. It was hard for her… emotions were not exactly something she was used to showing. However, one thing remained… Malcolm. Veronica could not deny that they had gotten closer since Elijah’s departure but she had figured out that Malcolm just wasn’t right for her. Her mind shifted and she began to think of kind and sweet Malcolm. That’s when she saw him… just standing there. A peaceful look on his face. She swallowed her nerves and walked up to him. Finally reaching him she coughed breaking his train of thought. “hey…” she said a bit sadly, knowing what was to come

Of course it's Veronica who interrupts this beautiful peacefulness. Malcolm, being the "nice guy" he is, put on a little fake smile. "Hey,", he said casually. He wasn't going to move just because Veronica appeared, he acts for himself now, and only himself. There was bitterness inside of him. Malcolm decided then to lay down on the grass and look up at the sky, with his hands behind his head. He also took the liberty of loosening his tie, might as well get comfortable, he thought to himself. "What brings you here?"

As Malcolm walked out of Potions class, he fell into an existential crises. This happens at least once a week, as a reaction to his horrific grades in the class. If the universe is irrational and nothing truly has meaning, then these grades, no matter how terrible, can't mean anything at all. This alleviated Malcolm's stress. 

Upon pondering life's purpose, or lack thereof, Malcolm eventually found himself nearing the Forbidden Forest. He halted and stood in his spot, looking from a measurable distance at the beginning of the wooded area. For some reason, he stayed still. Malcolm felt desolate, but there was something peaceful about standing there alone, away from the castle. Hogwarts in the spring is the most beautiful sight to Malcolm. Owls rushing across the bluest sky, the sound of Buckbeak's wild, untamed croaking, what once was a sheet of white was now the most luscious landscape. Nearly everyone else is either studying or dining... but suddenly, he saw someone down the green slope, walking toward him...

Veronica walked ahead of Malcolm in order to avoid his question. He walked slowly behind her, and slowly the silence became unbearable. “I… umm was talking to my mum earlier…” veronica stopped walking and face him, “My mum doesn’t exactly approve of anything I do.” Tears came to her eyes as she explained her mother’s abuse over the years, how her mother had suddenly changed. By the time she had finished talking she was thoroughly embarrassed. Her cheeks blazed a deep red and she looked down at her hands, “I’m sorry, you didn’t need to know any of that.”

Malcolm watched from behind as her curls swayed back and forth while she slowly walked. He watched her attentively as she stumbled in her speech. He wanted to hold her and comfort her, but decided to keep a fair distance. "Parents can really suck sometimes... What exactly is it that your mom does to upset you, though?".

Veronica blushed as he smiled at her and she followed Malcolm down the stone path. “So then…” she cleared her throat and looked up at him, “What do you want to talk about.” Veronica gently picked up the necklace to examine it more closely as she waited for Malcolm’s answer. It was so beautiful, a silver pendent with an intricate pattern of what appeared to be vines twisting upward and around the whole pendent. It suited her well. After a few more seconds of admiring the necklace, she realized that Malcolm hadn’t said anything yet. She looked back up at him with a questioning look, and met his deep brown eyes.

Upon meeting his eyes, Malcolm suddenly decided to break the silence. He didn't want to say something sad and generic like "how have you been?" or "how were your exams?", and even worse, "what did you do over the holidays?". However, he realized that something had upset her, so he asked with a look of concern,"It looks like something is bothering you. What's up?". They began to walk down a winding path blanketed with a white sheet of snow, farther and farther from the castle, deeper and deeper into Hogwarts's mysterious grounds and soon enough, the day folded in on itself and it became night.

Veronica was shocked. The last time that they had spoken, it hadn’t exactly ended well. She looked down at her feet and rubbed her hands together, “Ummm, I hadn’t realized that we were still on speaking terms.” Veronica laughed humorlessly and leaned back into the bench. Then she realized that that she was still holding the necklace. The necklace that Malcolm had given her. Guilt washed over as she tried to fix her mistake, “I’m sorry. Today has been kind of a rough day…: She sighed, “Why don’t you help me put your wonderful present on and then we can go for a walk.” Veronica stood up and smiled timidly at Malcolm, her eyes asking for forgiveness.

Without any words, Malcolm went up behind her, gently pushed aside her blonde curls with his hand, and clasped the necklace. He took a second to appreciate the graceful slope of her neck, and embraced her rose scent that lingered on him for far too long. "Let's walk.", he said with a smile that let her knew she was forgiven.

Veronica stared in shock at the gift that was in her hand. Even though she was still unsure of Malcolm, she was too excited to be receiving her one and only Christmas gift this year. She carefully and slowly opened the gift trying not to seem to eager, The Christmas wrapping paper and bow made her smile and giggle a little bit. This was adorable, and she welcomed the joy it brought to know that she still had Malcolm as at least a friend. She opened the box and found a beautiful silver locket. She gasped, “It’s so pretty…” she whispered. She looked up into Malcolm’s eyes, “Thank you.” As she said those two words emotions flooded through her. Shocked, she looked back down at the locket, trying to avoid his intense stare. Yet she still couldn’t help the small smile that came to her lips as she pictured Malcolm in a small shop actually thinking of her while he was Christmas shopping.

Malcolm was relieved to see the look of joy on her face. Finally, he had done something right, and even more importantly, it looks like Veronica doesn't completely despise him. That's a good sign. "I wasn't sure if you would like it. I'm really glad that you do." He smiled. "Do you want to take a walk with me and catch up? We haven't spoken in a while."

Veronica heard the soft padding of footsteps. When the footsteps stopped, she looked up slowly and saw Malcolm, standing in front of her with a gentle smile on his face. She tried to smile back but she knew that it fell flat. She pushed her hair behind her ears and looked down as she sighed. She felt that things might be awkward between them… specifically because of their last encounter, because of that she had hoped that by not saying anything that he would take the hint and just leave. However, she sensed that he had something to say and knowing Malcolm, he probably wouldn’t leave until he had said whatever was on his mind. Resigned, she looked back up at Malcolm, “So, what brings you here?” she asked.

After taking a second to think about his motives and contemplate the mess of emotions that are suddenly overwhelming the scene, he decided to just be straight forward and get this over with because he knew if he didn't show this gesture, he would regret it. "I have a late Christmas gift for you," he said, flashing her a familiar smile. "Here." Malcom handed her a little box that fit perfectly in the palm of her hand, packaged in Christmas themed wrapping paper and completed with the cliche red bow placed neatly on top. How festive.

Malcom was laying still in his bed, looking up at the ceiling as he thought of the cards life had just dealt him. What the hell am I doing with my life. It's so strange how one second everything seems fantastic, and the next, it all goes to shit. Why do I even bother... He's running out of solutions. What else could I possibly do? Nothing is making any sense at all anymore. It's as if Malcom fools himself every time-- he is lulled into a false sense of security and then realizes that he sabotaged everything from the start. It's tricky because when he does, he's not even conscious of it.

Veronica looked out the window and sighed. She slowly turned towards the door and pushed it open letting the cold frigid air outside engulf her. She smiled lightly enjoying the coldness. Cold meant numb. She had just finished talking with her mother and her mother’s words had left a new wound inside her. She walked slowly listening to the crunch of snow beneath her feet, she looked up and saw a small bench. She smiled and quickly hurried towards it. When she reached the bench she carefully rubbed the snow off of it. Damn, I knew I forgot something. She shivered and rubbed her hands together. She looked once more at the bench before sitting down. She began to relax and smiled. Then she remembered why she was out here in the first place and her smile vanished. She looked down at her shoes and a tear fell. She wiped it away quickly and looked up at the sky. She carefully went over the conversation she had just had with her mother and sighed. A new found determination coursed through her veins. I will not let her so this to me anymore. But she knew that her attempts to help herself were futile as the wound inside her continued to bleed instead of heal. She needed someone right now, anyone to take her mind off her mother.

Malcolm looked away, and took a swig of butter beer he's been hiding under his bed. Just do it, Mal. He placed the butter beer on the window sill and made his way outside quickly. He watched her from the distance, not sure if she can see him. He made his way to her slowly, and she faced him.

After he finished the Potions exam (he was able to get an extension since he decided to stay at the school for the holidays), Malcolm swiftly left the classroom. He felt as if he shed a thousand pounds. He was ready to go out to Hogsmeade but then Oh shit he suddenly remembered I never gave Veronica my Christmas gift. Malcolm bolted toward the Hufflepuff dormitory. He ravaged through his bag and pulled out a silver locket. Malcolm cupped it in his hands, and looked at it for a while. He wasn't sure whether or not he should still give it to Veronica, it might be suggestive. He continued to play with the thin, silver chain pouring it from palm to palm. She hates me... he thought to himself. He looked around and realized the dormitory was practically empty. He looked out the window onto the quad, and saw Veronica sitting on the bench. She looked pensive. And lovely. He smiled and continued to watch her.

Amelia smiled and nodded along with Malcolm knowing this was true. She inhaled deeply, letting it seep in through her body, filling her mouth with the familiar taste of cigarette smoke. She exhaled through her nose, looking back up to the pitch black sky, dotted with faint constellations. “If I even try to point out the Hydra, I get dirt looks.” she half joked half admitted. “But still, I suppose it takes someone with real patience and interest to care about something so seemingly mythical as the stars.” Amelia coaxed, letting the smoke from her cigarette circle her vision, the only light emanating from the burning ember on the end of it.

Malcolm flashed her a little smile. "I should probably begin my studying marathon for Potions now,". He pressed his cigarette into the ground with his foot and collected himself. "Are you going to come back inside as well?"

Amelia looked up timidly, biting her lip and hoping she would think before answering. One won’t hurt right? I mean it’s finals week, and I go through a pack a day anyway. “Well, if you’re offering, why not. I just hope it’s not too much trouble. Don’t feel obligated to give me the time of day, or night for that matter.” she joked, looking around at the pale moonlit windows around them.

As they strolled together into the cold, bitter night, Malcolm looked up at the clear sky, observing the lucent winter constellations. Right off the bat he could trace Orion, Draco, Cassiopea, and of course Canis Major and Minor. Even the blur that is the Andromeda galaxy was apparent on a night like this. He knew Amelia appreciated it too. "Only us star gazers could appreciate the beauty of a dry, cold winter night," he humored. After taking a few more lasting seconds to appreciate the limitless ambiance of the atmosphere, Malcolm searched his pockets for his cigarette pack. Fumbling around, he eventually found it and handed one to Amelia, lighter ready to go. They lit up, soaked in the toxic waste to secrete their worries, and humbly looked up at the celestial sphere while the smoke smoothly flowed from their lips.
